Sable

Sable Has Never Known Love. We Can Change That.

Huntington, WV • One by One Animal Advocates

When we first read Sable's story, we couldn’t turn away. Someone had found this beautiful Siamese mix dragging herself across the ground, unable to use her back legs. She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t giving up. She was simply pulling herself forward with her front legs, hoping someone would notice. Then we stepped in. One By One Animal Advocates cannot turn these cases down. We rushed her to the emergency room, fearing the worst. As we waited for the first x-rays, we braced for a shattered spine and an impossible decision. Instead, the x-rays told a different story. Thankfully, her spine wasn't broken, instead the x-ray revealed old bullet fragments. The fragments were old, but a testament to the life Sable has endured. She's been through unspeakable, intentional cruelty and still approaches her people with trust. At the ER, Sable could not stand on her own. She still had feeling in her back legs and normal anal tone, and she would “rabbit kick” to reposition herself, all small signs of hope. But she was unable to urinate on her own and required manual bladder expression. After being transferred to Ashland Animal Clinic, there has still been no improvement. She is still unable to stand, and her bladder continues to require manual expression. Without a clear structural cause, we are holding onto hope that inflammation is affecting her mobility. Steroid treatment may help, but right now, we are waiting and hoping to see how much function she can regain. Cases like this are never easy. We are constantly balancing what medicine can do with the quality of life every animal deserves. Sable deserves every possible chance to recover, and right now that means around the clock care. Her emergency visit, x-rays, medications, hospitalization, and ongoing treatment have already resulted in significant medical expenses, and her care is far from over. If you can help give Sable that chance, please consider donating. Every contribution goes directly toward her care and gives her more time, more support, and more hope.

Banyan

Banyan is a 7 year old Mix-Breed in Portland, ME, who needs $1,136 for Dental Extended Care Prophylaxis.

Portland, ME

I adopted Banyan (originally named Bandit) from the HART cat shelter in Cumberland, ME. in August/2023. I'd just moved from Portland's West End (after 31 years) to the Deering/Evergreen neighborhood, and wanted to adopt a second cat. Banny was a surrender. His elderly owner developed dementia and had other serious health problems. She could no longer care for him and her family didn't want him. Banny was taken to a veterinarian to be euthanized: he wasn't sick, he was just inconvenient. The vet refused, and instead got him to HART. I met B shortly after, right at the time when Lahaina, Maui (Hawaii) had the huge fire that destroyed the town and killed 100 people. But the famous old banyan tree there survived, just as Banyan had survived euthanasia here. That's how he got his new name. Banyan gets annual health exams. On his last visit in April, I was told that he had tooth decay, plaque build-up, & gingivitis, and will need costly dental care. While I budget for both of my cats for yearly exams, the $1,600 price tag is simply more than I can afford. Banny has come a long way from his early days of hissing & biting, to being the silly, quirky, lovable companion he is today. I am trying to get Banyan the care he deserves. I'm a senior living on a fixed income in subsidized housing. I never saw this extraordinary expense coming. What makes the cost high is the bloodwork, X-rays, and procedure medication.

Beatrix Bellavue

Beatrix Bellavue is a 9-year-old Domestic Shorthair Cat in Grand Rapids, MI, who needs $2,000 for CT Scan/MRI - Sedated.

Grand Rapids, MI

In February a fellow cat-lady called me about two kittens in a condemned house. I hadn't planned on fostering but once I saw them I couldn't leave them behind. Beatrix (Bb) and her sister Pharrah were vetted and spayed before being adopted TOGETHER after 41 days. I have a return policy for all of my fosters and Bb was returned with a serious injury. She is now safely back in my care indefinitely. Before her accident Beatrix had made friends with the other 5 cats in my home. Her and the youngest of them would fly around the house at hyper speed! Bb quickly became my new cuddle bug and loved to climb into my lap to snuggle even when I was just kneeling for a moment! She loved to snuggle up with either of my children, her big uncle Mauser, or fluffy aunt Sable. B got her name because she had the most unamused 'resting b face' that made her look so serious like she is judging you. She has a nose that looks like a heart and loves getting face scratchies. When you scratch under her chin you can see her sweet baby smile and her adorable teeny front teeth. Her favorite toys are the little mice and will carry, toss, and bat one around like a proud lioness. Beatrix has an unsteady gait in her back legs, pain with handling/touching, and is unable to play, scratch an itch, or even groom herself. She has been diagnosed with a slipped disc/pinched nerve. She will need a sedated CT or MRI which will run around 2k and does not include the surgery needed to repair it. Animal Emergency Hospital of Byron Center will perform the specialty scan. As most of you know I am a single parent to two and while I have a steady job there is not enough financial wiggle room to shoulder this much of a financial emergency. It breaks my heart to see her hurting and how lonely Beatrix is having to be isolated.

Tempest

Tempest is a 9 year old German Shepherd Dog in Spring, , who needs $9,000 for Definitive Radiation and IV Chemotherapy.

Spring

Tempest and her littermate sister, Eris, were welcomed into our home when they were just nine weeks old. Together, they were thick as thieves and partners in crime. Tragically, we later lost Eris to Degenerative Myelopathy. This past December, I suffered another profound loss with the unexpected passing of my former partner, who was doggy dad and one of my closets friend. She was referred to an endocrinologist and diagnosed with anal gland sarcoma. She underwent surgery to remove approximately 85% of the diseased tissue, along with affected pelvic and abdominal lymph nodes. While a new chest nodule has been identified, there is currently no evidence of metastasis to her lungs and organs. She is receiving care at Texas A&M Small Animal Hospital in College Station. Tempest is a gentle soul who brings comfort everywhere she goes. As an unofficial therapy dog, she spent years easing patients' anxiety and loneliness, always making everyone feel truly seen. At home, this sweet German Shepherd has a quirky side—she’s hilariously bossed around by a tiny Chihuahua, is obsessed with laser pointers, loves stealing pillows, and is a dedicated squirrel watcher. Despite my daily job search, finances are exhausted. I’ve maxed out credit cards for Tempest’s surgery, labs, and the long, recurring trips to her oncologist. Losing her daddy in December nearly broke me; Tempest is my "ride or die" who helped me survive that storm. She save

Kiki

Kiki is a 8 year old California Spangled Cat in Jacksonville, FL, who needs $1,800 for Entropian Surgery.

Jacksonville, FL

Kiki was living in an abandon trailer and use to be my coworkers family members cat. My coworker asked if me and my girlfriend would like to take her in and we did. Kiki was cold, skinny and had a double eye infection. We took her in to take care of her and get the medication she needed. After taking care of her eyes that would stay sealed shut all day, we found out she was getting eye ulsars. After going to Petfolk they told us how bad the ulsars were getting that is could cause her eye to be badly scard and we would have to get it removed. They set us up an appointment with an eye doctor and they told us the reason she is getting uslars is because she has Entropian. The procedure that will fix it is going to be $1800. We have already spent over $1000 on medication. We got Kiki because me and my girlfriend have always wanted a pet that we could feel wanted. After everything Kiki has been through we have never met a cat so well behaved and happy. She loves to cuddle, she talks no stop and she runs around now playing with her toys. She has already learned where to scratch her claws and even with that big cone she has on, she is so positive and playful. I have already went through1/3 of my savings just to get Kiki the best treatment. She is currently on 6 treatments and one is made from her blood. So we have to go every 4 days to draw more blood from her and that is $60 every-time. All we wanna do is give Kiki the best life

Quigley

Quigley is a 3 year old Cane Corso in Fall River, MA, who needs $564 for Neuter, Heartworm Test, and Medication.

Fall River, MA • Forever Paws Animal Shelter

* Forever Paws Animal Shelter * On July 8th 2024, New Bedford Animal Control seized 21 dogs from a home in New Bedford, MA. These dogs, 12 cane corsos and 9 bulldog mixes, were kept in deplorable conditions. It was well over 100 degrees in the attic and the third floor apartment where these dogs were kept and they were covered in feces and urine. They are now being cared for by staff at Forever Paws Animal Shelter in Fall River. These dogs came in with urine burns, pressure sores, overgrown nails, wounds both fresh and in various stages of healing, skin conditions, and various infections. Quigley needs to be neutered and heartworm tested prior to being adopted. These dogs, despite the situation that they came from, have not shown any aggression. Some are understandably fearful, most of them have no idea what to do with human interaction and have no idea how to handle affection. They clearly want to be loved and many of them will crawl right into our laps and tuck themselves under our chins. They are all so, so deserving of a second chance. As a non-profit that runs strictly off of donations, we were not prepared for an undertaking of this scale but we're determined to do right by every single one of these dogs. Many of them are large breeds (~100lbs) so spays/neuters alone can be around $1k-$2k.

Acey

Acey is a 8 year old Mix-Breed in Louisville, KY, who needs $2,000 for Bladder Infection.

Louisville, KY

So, I got Acey when I was 20 years old, and he's been in my life for these past 8 years. And he's been an absolute joy, and he's helped me through so much, and been there for me, and moved in every new apartment with me, and really, truly grew up with me through my adulthood. I have two other cats in the household, and they love him so much. He is their big brother! So, his current situation is that, we noticed that he hasn't been urinating completely. It was starting as a small stream and then slowly became just a drip. And upon taking him to the vet, they said that he would need to undergo some surgeries and potential x-rays to figure out what's really wrong with him. Bluepearl pet hospital gave us antibiotics and pain medicine to help ease his discomfort. Acey is special in so many ways. He has so much character, he's so independent, but also the biggest baby you'll ever meet. He does this thing where he'll bark at you, but that's only because he wants to come off as defensive. Soon as he lets his guard down, he wants to be all up in your lap. We like to warn our friends and family when they come over that he likes to make out. I just started a new job that will help me be in a better financial situation, but I have no emergency funds saved up, and this was very unexpected, and on top of everything else, this clearly was not in the cards, and I just would love for him to be back to his self again.
