After a Lifetime of Neglect, Benny Finally Has a Home—Help Keep Him Comfortable

When 4-pound, 12-year-old Benny arrived at our county shelter in March, it was immediately clear that this tiny senior had endured a lifetime without the care he deserved. Benny had never been neutered, had no teeth, and his lower jaw had deteriorated so severely that it was almost impossible to comprehend how he had survived for so long. But the biggest shock came when his bloodwork revealed kidney disease. Benny wasn't an adoption candidate. He was a hospice dog. Benny was pulled from the county shelter and transferred to Wild Whiskers, where we promised him that, whatever time he had left, he would finally have a safe home and someone fighting for him. And then we discovered something wonderful: Benny doesn't act like a hospice dog. This tiny little guy is still full of personality. He greets everyone who walks through the door with his wagging nub, jumps up for attention, loves people, and happily welcomes foster dogs and cats—including special-needs kittens. Despite everything he has endured, Benny has an enormous capacity for love. Of course, hospice care isn't always easy. Benny has days when he becomes extremely lethargic, won't eat, or doesn't want to get out of bed. Those moments are frightening, and his family carefully watches his quality of life to make sure he remains comfortable. But so far, Benny keeps getting back up. He's still eating. He's still enjoying attention. He's still loving his foster siblings. And he's still showing us that he's not ready to give up. As long as Benny is comfortable and enjoying his life, Wild Whiskers will continue giving him every good day possible. He receives subcutaneous fluids several times a week, supplements twice daily, regular veterinary care, and repeat bloodwork to monitor his kidney disease and make sure his treatment continues to support his quality of life. We can't change the first 12 years of Benny's story. We can't undo the neglect that left his tiny body so damaged. But we can change what comes next. Benny will never spend another night on the streets. He will never go without veterinary care again. And he will never wonder whether someone loves him. Jennifer, of JKRC Rescue, dog named Charlie, whom she has loved for seven years, was recently diagnosed with bone cancer. Several weeks ago, Jennifer noticed Charlie limping. Then one night, he fell from the bed and would no longer put any weight on his right hind leg. She immediately brought him to her primary veterinarian, where they performed bloodwork and took X-rays. The images were sent to a radiologist, and it was initially believed that Charlie had suffered a fracture. Jennifer took Charlie to see Dr. Miller at Eclipse Specialty & Emergency Pet Care. She arrived believing they were dealing with a fracture—but instead, she received the devastating news that Charlie has bone cancer. Jennifer was completely blindsided. She broke down in shock, never expecting to hear those words. But Charlie still has a strong will to live. He isn’t ready to give up—and neither is Jennifer. Faced with an unimaginable decision, she said yes to amputating his right hind leg to give him the best possible chance to keep fighting and enjoying his life. Jennifer spends every day helping save dogs and supporting their foster families. And she and Charlie need all the love, prayers, and support they can get to surround them. Ringo’s Paws Are Bothering Him, Help Us Find the Cause

At just three years old, Ringo should be a happy, carefree Chihuahua. Instead, this little dog in the care of Teresa's Cat and Dog Rescue is struggling with both the physical discomfort of an unresolved medical issue and the emotional effects of a very difficult start to life. Ringo repeatedly chews at his feet, and his rescue does not yet know why. His nails and paws need to be thoroughly examined, and he needs veterinary testing for allergies and other possible underlying conditions that could be causing his discomfort. His physical concerns are only part of what Ringo is facing. His difficult past has left him extremely reserved and slow to trust, and he needs time to decompress and training to build his confidence. His fear and uncertainty make it especially difficult for him to connect with potential adopters, which could mean a much longer wait for a home. There have been encouraging moments. Recently, Ringo played with another dog at the rescue, Diezel, which is the first time his rescuers had ever seen him truly play with another dog. That moment showed them that underneath all that uncertainty is a sweet little dog who wants to feel safe enough to be himself. Before Ringo can focus on his next chapter, we need to address the discomfort he is experiencing. Donations will help Teresa's Cat and Dog Rescue get his paws and nails evaluated, test for allergies, and pursue additional veterinary testing or treatment needed to determine why he keeps chewing his feet. Ringo has already spent too much of his life feeling uncomfortable and unsure. Zuzu was rescued by CAMO Rescue from the urgent list at Palm Valley, but her journey to safety is far from over. This sweet girl is facing a serious femur fracture and needs part of his tail amputated. Her veterinarian is hopeful that both procedures can be completed together, giving Zuzu the best chance to heal and move forward into the happy, pain-free life she deserves. The estimated cost for Zuzu’s surgery and take-home medications is $2,500–$2,800. CAMO Rescue stepped up to save Zuzu when her time was running out. Huey is Learning to Be Brave

Meet Huey, a two year old gentle giant who is still learning that the world doesn’t have to be a scary place. Huey and his siblings first came to the rescue as young puppies through a partnership with Animal Control in a neighboring community. He was adopted, but eventually returned after showing reactivity toward a man in the home. Now, Huey is in the care of one of the rescue’s board members, who is also a trainer, giving him the guidance and consistency he needs to build confidence and prepare for the right forever home. New people can still make Huey nervous. He prefers to observe from a distance and decide when he feels safe enough to say hello. But give him patience (and maybe a few treats) and you’ll quickly see how eager he is to learn. Confident dogs are especially helpful for Huey. He looks to them for reassurance, learning from their example that new people, places, and experiences can be okay. Huey doesn’t need to be sheltered from the world. He needs patient people who will help him experience it safely, celebrating every walk, introduction, and brave step forward. That’s what his rescue is working to give him now. With continued training, enrichment, and dedicated care, Huey can keep making progress toward becoming the happy, confident dog everyone knows is in there. Help Wally Leave His Pain Behind

Brooklyn, NY • Rescue City

When Rescue City saved Wally on July 4th, we knew the wound on his leg was bad. We didn't yet know that helping him heal would require more than a month of intensive care and over $6,000 for one dog. Wally had a horrific, extremely deep open wound on his leg - raw, exposed, and severe enough that healing would not happen quickly or easily. This wasn't a scrape or an injury that could simply be stitched closed and forgotten. Wally was facing a long, painful recovery requiring intensive wound management and constant veterinary oversight. Since his rescue, Wally has needed back to back veterinary appointments every 3-4 days to examine, clean, treat, and re-bandage his wound. Each visit has added hundreds of dollars to his care, while weeks of necessary medical boarding have pushed his total expenses beyond $6,000, and his recovery isn't over yet. Funds raised through this campaign will help cover Wally's ongoing wound treatment, frequent veterinary rechecks and bandage changes, medications, medical boarding, and the continued care he needs to safely reach the end of his recovery. But Wally is so much more than his medical bills. He's a young, smart, energetic dog who spent much of his life without the freedom and stimulation every dog deserves. Since his rescue, the very treatment necessary to heal him has also meant more restriction: a cone, limited activity, no rough play, and few opportunities to socialize normally with other dogs. Imagine finally being given your freedom, and then having to spend your first weeks of it being told you still can't run and play. That frustration and pent up energy began showing up in Wally's behavior, so Rescue City made another commitment to him. He now works regularly with a professional trainer while we support his foster home, helping him find appropriate outlets for his energy and learn the skills that will give him the best possible chance at a forever home. We didn't save Wally just to heal his wound. We saved him to give him a life. Appointment after appointment. Bandage after bandage. Boarding bill after boarding bill. For more than a month, we've kept showing up for Wally because he deserved someone willing to see his recovery through. Now, we need help carrying him the rest of the way. Every donation toward Wally's medical care helps relieve the enormous cost of his recovery and gets him closer to the day when the bandages and cone finally come off for good. It also helps give Rescue City the ability to keep saying yes when the next injured, overlooked dog desperately needs someone in their corner. Wally has spent his summer healing. Moonlight is a sweet senior who arrived at our rescue in devastating condition; Lyme positive with a urolith, URI, unexplained anemia, a mast cell tumor on his scrotum, and a CCL rupture in his hind leg. Through it all, Moon has remained wonderfully pleasant, happily sunning himself on his foster’s porch and discovering the joy of toys. Our small rescue is dedicated to saving senior pit-bull type dogs and providing the comprehensive medical care they need. Moonlight’s many medical challenges have placed a significant financial strain on our limited resources. He has been treated for everything except his CCL rupture, which requires surgery. Wiggles Way urgently needs your help to cover Moonlight’s surgery so this sweet senior can finally be pain-free and medically cleared for adoption. Peter Parker Is Headed for a Brand New Day!

Issaquah, WA • Pacific Rim Rescue

At Pacific Rim Rescue, we think our Petey definitely has some “spidey” sense going for him! ❤️ Peter Parker was already known to our rescue partners, who had helped his owner get him neutered just a few months ago. Sadly, his owner then passed away and he was left as a stray. As the devastating White Swan area fires were looming in Eastern Washington State, our rescue partners were out searching for animals who needed help and that's when they found Peter again, while unable to get him to safety as the fires progressed, were able to leave food and water for him. After the fires abated our rescue team was able to locate and secure Peter! His injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle or suffering another significant impact. We drove to Yakima to bring him to safety and got him to our veterinarian that same day for treatment of his wounds and continued medical care. Peter has a noticeable dent in his skull, and we don't yet know the long term aspect of any potential brain injury. What we do know is that this sweet boy is now comfortable and safe in a loving foster home, where he has quickly earned the title of the best and most chill dog ever, with wonderful house manners and is a couch cuddle champ. As a large-breed mix, Peter may be the kind of dog some people overlook. But we think this boy is worth a second—and third—look! He is sweet, well-mannered, calm, and an all-around wonderful companion. Peter has already been through more than any dog should have to endure. Now, we're determined to give him the care and support he needs to heal and the chance to find the loving future he deserves. Peter Parker is ready for his brand new day. Help Cayenne get the Diagnostics that She Needs to Heal

Geneva, OH • NE Ohio Greyhound Rescue

Called Kai for short by her loving caretakers, Cayenne, an elderly blue tick beagle, is more sweet than spicy! She was discovered as a stray, living under a truck for months after her humans cruelly failed her. Cayenne's initial issues included skin inflammation, a secondary infection from allergies, a benign lump under her chin and infections in both ears. X-rays show that she has right hip dysplasia, and her left rear leg has a luxating patella and is severely arthritic. She’s also anemic and has crystals in her urine. We promptly started treatment for both as well as therapy for degenerative joint disease. When she arrived, we were concerned with the hypermature cataract in her blind left eye as her eye looked swollen and cataracts can lead to glaucoma. Her eye pressure was normal in both eyes, but she has an immature cataract growing in right eye, and will eventually lose her vision completely. A few days ago, Cayenne's cataract started to change and is luxating. We need to test her eye pressure again. Cayenne's allergies have flared again and she's having some trouble with malabsorption and weight loss. She's finishing a course of antibiotics and antifungals for her skin issues and is taking supplements to help with digestion and weight gain. We are grateful to Cayenne's supporters who paid for her initial vet bills but we now need to raise funds to cover the cost of her upcoming diagnostics. On a more positive note: Kai LOVES being picked up and held and excels where grooming is concerned. An excellent patient and an exceptionally good beagle, she takes all of her medications like the charming champ she is. She loves her bed, keeps her bedding clean and is usually quiet, except at suppertime! AROO!
