Creamsicle

Creamsicle was rescued from a tree and needs lots of medical attention. Will you help?

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Creamsicle was found stuck high in a tree in Paterson, terrified, injured, and unable to get down. Her rescue from the treetops brought RBARI one more tiny medically needy kitten during this relentless kitten season. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Paterson Fire Department and Paterson Animal Control, Creamsicle was safely rescued. RBARI took over her medical care and rehabilitation upon rescue, as it quickly became clear she had been through an ordeal before climbing the tree. Creamsicle has an ulcer on one eye, an upper respiratory infection, and painful burns on her paw pads. Her feet were raw and it was painful to walk. They don’t yet know what caused the burns, but exposure to extreme heat or a chemical is suspected. Creamsicle is on crate rest as she is treated for her eye and respiratory infections and the painful burns on her feet. This sweet, gentle kitten has been wonderful for her baths, medication, and wound care. Creamsicle arrived at one of the hardest points of kitten season. Their foster homes are full. Their cages are full. Supplies are disappearing faster than they can replace them, medical expenses continue to climb, and their volunteers and fosters are exhausted—yet kittens like Creamsicle continue to need these caretakers every day. RBARI wants and needs to keep saying yes. And with you by their sides, they can. If you can donate even the smallest amount, it would make the biggest difference. Thank you.

Mighty Max

Given away at 1 pound and 6 weeks old, Mighty Max needs your support.

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Too young to leave his mom, Mighty Max was given away at just six weeks old. A week later, he was surrendered to Ramapo Bergen Animal Rescue in critical condition. Max is fighting for his life. He is extremely frail and weighs only 16 ounces. Max was hypoglycemic and dehydrated, in need of immediate 24-hour hospitalization and supportive care to stabilize him. He was crashing fast. With your support, Mighty Max can keep fighting and live up to his name. Please consider a donation to provide Max the intensive support he needs. At just a few weeks old, tiny pups like Max still need the nutrition, antibodies, security, and care their mother provides. Max is a painful reminder of the consequences of irresponsible breeding and sending puppies to homes before they are ready. Thankfully, this tiny fighter is holding on. Diagnostics will determine if Max is so frail from not receiving enough nutritional support or if an underlying medical condition contributed to his decline. At his tiny size, parasites or even missing just a few meals could quickly put him into crisis. They believe Max is a yorkie mix, and this adorable little pup will be seeking a foster home once he is stable enough to leave the hospital. For now, they are cautiously hopeful and giving Max everything he should have had from the beginning; proper nutrition, veterinary care, safety, and the chance to grow stronger. Max deserved a safer start. With your help, we can give him the chance at the healthy, happy life he should have had all along.

Jewel

Jewel was seen getting hit by a car. She urgently needs your help!

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Tiny Jewel was rushed to the emergency hospital in critical condition after a Good Samaritan saw her being hit by a car. She was admitted in excruciating pain with a shattered pelvis, pulmonary contusions, abdominal fluid, bloody urine, and difficulty breathing. Ramapo-Bergen Animal Rescue was then contacted and they could not turn away from this cutie. Jewel required oxygen, pain medication, hospitalization, and close monitoring while the veterinary team worked to stabilize her. Jewel is slowly beginning to stabilize. Her breathing has improved, she is able to urinate on her own, and incredibly, she has even begun to walk again. But Jewel is far from fully recovered. Her pelvis has multiple fractures on both sides. She will need six weeks of strict crate rest, medical monitoring, follow-up imaging, pain management, and potentially additional procedures. Jewel urgently needs a quiet, loving medical foster home where she can feel safe and recover. Despite everything she has endured, she has been incredibly sweet with the hospital staff. Jewel desperately needs your help. With emergency hospital expenses, ongoing care, and an experienced foster who can keep her safe through recovery. She survived being hit by a car. Now she needs all of us to help her heal. If you can, any size donation makes a big difference. Thank you!

Dice

Dice can't urinate due to a life-threatening bladder entrapment.

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Meet Dice. He is suffering from a severe perineal hernia where his bladder has become trapped outside of where it belongs. The condition has worsened to the point that he cannot urinate and urgently needs surgery to save his life. What makes Dice's story especially heartbreaking is that this condition is preventable through neutering. The surgery he needs is extensive, specialized, and expensive — with costs approaching $10,000. Dice remains hospitalized with a urinary catheter in place to keep him stable until he can have surgery. Without surgery, his condition will continue to worsen. With surgery, Dice will get a second chance at his best life. Perineal hernias are seen most commonly in unneutered male dogs, making Dice's story an important reminder of the lifesaving role spaying and neutering can play in preventing serious medical conditions. Tomorrow, Dice can get his chance. We will share updates as he begins his road to recovery. Until then, please hold Dice in your hearts as you help us give him the future he deserves. If you can help Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. No dollar amount is too small as the bills are stacking up quickly. Thank you. 7/24/26 Update Dice had his life-saving surgeries and is recovering well!

Please help Petey recover from infected ears causing nerve damage.

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Five-year-old Petey should be enjoying life, but instead, he has been living with chronic pain from untreated infection. When Petey arrived at the hospital, his face was so swollen that he had stopped eating. Both of his ears are severely infected, and doctors believe the inflammation is causing nerve damage. They are also concerned about the possibility of a deeper infection or abscess. Imagine living with a constant, throbbing earache for days, months, or even years. Every movement hurts. Every sound hurts. Even eating becomes impossible due to pain. Despite everything he has endured, Petey remains incredibly sweet and trusting. Our hope is that aggressive treatment will reduce the swelling and inflammation, but Petey's ears have suffered years of damage. Depending on how he responds, he may eventually require TECA (Total Ear Canal Ablation) surgery - an extensive procedure costing thousands of dollars, which may be the only way to finally give Petey relief from a lifetime of pain. Petey didn't deserve to suffer this long. Thank you for helping us give this sweet boy the comfort, treatment, and future he deserves.

Please help give Sheba a second chance.

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Baby Sheba couldn’t eat. She couldn’t heal. She needed rescue. Seven-month-old Sheba was suffering from a severe rectal prolapse for at least a week before help was sought. The only care given was to “clean her at home” while this sweet puppy stopped eating and continued to decline. By the time Sheba reached us, she needed emergency surgery to save her life. Doctors initially attempted to replace the prolapse and place a purse-string suture, but became concerned that something more serious was happening internally. During exploratory surgery, they discovered necrotic tissue in her colon that had to be removed immediately. To spare Sheba future surgeries, she was spayed, and her painful cherry eye was corrected. We are so grateful Sheba made it to rescue in time, but her medical care has been extensive, and she will continue to need close monitoring and follow-up care during recovery. Please help us give Sheba the second chance she deserves Sheba has already endured more pain than any puppy ever should. But today she is finally safe. She is finally being cared for. And for the first time in a long time, this baby has a chance to heal – with you by her side. 6/10/26 Update Sheba is slowly recovering but is still going to the bathroom more frequently than she should. She is receiving the best care possible right now. 8/3/26 Update After the extensive surgery she needed to remove damaged colon tissue following her rectal prolapse, healing is going to be a gradual process. The good news is that she is happy, playful, eating well, and enjoying all the love she's missed. But, healing takes time. The biggest focus is helping Sheba’s digestive system recover. She still has very frequent bowel movements and some straining related to the healing process, so we're continuing to work closely with her veterinary team to give her body the time it needs. We don’t yet know yet what her long-term needs will be. For now, Sheba is exactly where she needs to be - with a loving foster family, excellent veterinary care, and so many people (YOU!) cheering her on.

Tiny Kittens. Endless Medical Needs.

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Kitten season is well underway, and already at RBARI we are overwhelmed. We received a call about three very young orphaned kittens suffering from respiratory infections. We never want our animals to be sick, but especially not when these babies are so young and just trying to survive. When they arrived, we quickly realized one baby was in far worse condition. The tiny female kitten had suffered a traumatic injury leaving part of her leg missing. She was battling infection, with exposed bone requiring immediate medical attention. All three kittens, Tchotchke, Trinket, and Knick-Knack, were rushed to the hospital. Doctors determined there was not enough healthy skin to close Trinket’s leg. For now, the focus is on controlling infection, keeping her comfortable, and helping her grow strong enough for the amputation surgery she will need. Even through everything she has been through, Trinket is bright and fighting hard right alongside her brothers. We know a fighter when we see one. Caring for fragile bottle babies, especially with special medical needs, requires devoted care, medications, supplies, veterinary treatment, and even in Trinket’s case, major surgery. Kitten season is relentless. The calls never stop. The emergencies keep coming through our doors. And every time we say yes to babies like Trinket, we are relying on you to help us keep going. Kittens will continue to pour through our doors this kitten season - completely dependent on rescue to survive. With your help we can continue to to say yes to more and more of these cases. Help us get through another kitten season and put these babies in loving homes.

April

Part of April’s Brain Is Permanently Damaged… But She Still Gives Kisses. 💔

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

An abandoned stray, April sat alone for weeks in a county shelter, likely silently suffering through seizures no one ever saw. Staff would find her confused and disoriented, her kennel covered in feces – knowing something was wrong, but not knowing why. April was always sweet, affectionate, and covering everyone in kisses, but staff noticed she seemed “off” at times. Then, April had two witnessed seizures and staff immediately reached out to RBARI. We took over April’s care to get her the emergency medical help she desperately needed. April came to us blind, wobbly, circling, yet still so incredibly sweet. After hospitalization, a neurological consult and an MRI / spinal tap, April was diagnosed with GME, an autoimmune disease causing acute inflammation in the brain. The MRI showed that this swelling has likely been occurring for months. Part of the left side of her brain has been permanently damaged leaving actual holes where healthy brain tissue should be. Her seizures are currently under control, but April’s journey is far from over. She has vision loss, is wobbly, circles when excited, and may always have some neurological deficits, but is still so full of love. She gives endless kisses, wags her tail, and has the sweetest puppy-like spirit. April is receiving 24-hour care at the hospital and will be moving into a medical foster where she can be closely monitored. She is now on high-dose steroids and immunosuppressive medications, and will need long-term care. From alone, seizing in the shelter to beloved and healing, cases like April’s remind us why we do what we do. And why we can’t continue without your support. Thank you for standing with us to help April and animals like her get the care they deserve. 8/13/26 Update \> April has been through so much, but she continues to amaze us every single day. \> \> April recently suffered another setback and was rushed to the hospital for cluster seizures. Her medications have been adjusted and thankfully, she is responding well. \> \> Even with all she has endured, April remains happy, playful, affectionate, and full of life. Her neurological signs have improved, she runs around constantly – we are starting to think she may have some greyhound in her – and she absolutely LOVES Cheerios. \> \> Most importantly, April is safe in a loving foster home where she is being closely monitored and adored. From seizing alone in a shelter to being loved as part of a family, April’s journey is a reminder of why rescue matters so much. \> \> Thank you for continuing to stand behind dogs like April who deserve every chance to heal and be happy.

Help Be The Hope Sage Needs

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Immediately, she was rushed into emergency spinal surgery for her only chance to walk again. Lucky for the team, there was hope! Sage’s medical team began seeing feeling return to her legs and by the end of the day, she stood up. After such a terrifying start, this moment feels enormous. While her doctors are cautiously optimistic, Sage still faces a long recovery filled with crate rest, rehabilitation, and hands-on care. She currently needs help expressing her bladder and will require a dedicated foster home where she can safely heal. Recovery from spinal injuries takes patience, time, and significant medical support, but Sage is already showing everyone how hard she is willing to fight. Emergency surgery and ongoing recovery care come at an overwhelming cost, and we urgently need donations to continue giving Sage every possible chance at a full life again. Help Mocha Regain Her Strength

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Mocha’s world changed in an instant. At only 3½ years old, this sweet longhaired Dachshund suddenly lost the use of her back legs due to IVDD. By the time help was rescued, surgery was no longer an option, but Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge refused to give up on her. Thanks to RBARI’s partnership with Second Chance Pet Adoption League, Mocha received an emergency neurology consult, MRI, and specialized care to keep her comfortable and give her the best possible future. The good news is that Mocha is no longer in pain. The difficult reality is that her paralysis may be permanent. She is currently incontinent and needs ongoing care, frequent bathing, and bladder expression to prevent infections and sores. Even so, Mocha’s spirit remains bright. She still loves squeaky toys, gentle dog friends, and every bit of kindness she receives. RBARI is committed to helping Mocha heal and preparing her for the loving home she deserves, but her medical care is costly. Donations will help cover her MRI, neurology care, rehabilitation, and long-term support while allowing the rescue to continue saying yes to animals with nowhere else to turn. A Tiny Puppy Deserves a Lifetime of Love… No Matter How Long That Life May Be

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Rose is just a baby seeking a very special family. At only 4 months old, this sweet Mini Goldendoodle puppy should be running, playing, and living the carefree life every puppy deserves. Instead, Rose is facing a heartbreaking diagnosis that will significantly shorten her life. Rose was sold by a breeder as healthy, but it was soon discovered she has a severe 5/6 heart murmur caused by pulmonic stenosis, a congenital heart condition that means her little heart is working far too hard. She has begun heart medication to help give her the best quality of life possible and has an appointment with a cardiologist to determine if she is a candidate for a specialized balloon valvuloplasty procedure that could help give her more time. We are doing everything we can for Rose, and with you by our side, we can do even more. Rose is also in need of a foster home right now. We are searching for a calm, loving home where she can feel cherished and safe while not overexerting herself. Her foster would need to help get her to cardiology appointments and, of course, give her the love she deserves for however long she has. Despite everything stacked against her, Rose is incredibly loving and full of life. She doesn’t know she is sick – and only knows how to love and be loved. Urgent Rescue in Progress: Baby Comet Battling Parvo and Severe Trauma

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Comet is only 4–5 months old–a tiny French Bulldog puppy who should be playing with toys and learning what love feels like, not fighting to survive in a hospital. This innocent baby was surrendered to local animal control with a severely prolapsed and bleeding rectum and testing positive for parvo, a deadly intestinal virus. There is no way to know how long he had truly been suffering, bleeding, and in pain. Violent diarrhea from parvo likely caused the prolapse. The damage left is severe. When Comet arrived at the hospital, he was sick and in pain, but alert. Then, he crashed. Comet quickly declined and needed plasma transfusions, fluids, antibiotics, and intensive emergency care to stabilize him. He is beginning to respond, but his condition is still very guarded. Our veterinary team is continuing to try to stabilize Comet, reduce the prolapse, and determine whether the tissue can be saved and safely returned, or if this tiny puppy will need emergency surgery. Right now, the biggest fear is damage to his colon and the surrounding tissue. Comet’s medical bills are climbing fast: emergency hospitalization, plasma, parvo treatment, around-the-clock supportive care, and possible surgery. Today, for Comet, every share matters, every dollar helps, and every prayer is needed. Thank you for being part of his fight. 5/30/26 Update Thanks to you, Comet has been able to get the medical attention he needs and is on his way to recovery. 6/17/26 Update Thanks to all of you, Comet is doing incredibly well health wise and also in his foster. So well, in fact, that they are going to adopt him! This wouldn't have been possible without the help of people who truly cared for and supported Comet.

Hit by a car and living with painful untreated entropion… Happy is finally safe.

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Happy is a young Shiba Inu mix, about 3 years old, who has likely spent years in pain. This resilient boy came to RBARI after running loose time and time again with painful untreated entropion, a condition where the eyelids roll inward and eyelashes scrape against the eyes with every blink. This constant discomfort also causes irritation, ulcers, and infection. He underwent surgery to correct his eyes and finally give him comfort, but this came at no low cost. But that’s not all. Happy is also recovering from wounds on both of his legs, likely after being hit by a car. He is currently receiving wound care and hydrotherapy at the shelter to help him heal. Despite everything, Happy is friendly, playful, and full of life – hence the name! He doesn’t love the cone or hydrotherapy, but he’s being brave through it all. RBARI needs your help to cover the cost of these treatments, so he can not only live happy, but also healthy, pain free, and hopefully in his forever home one day. Any amount would be appreciated. Trooper Needs Us After Traumatic Injury

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Trooper was found on the side of the road, his face so swollen and injured it was hard to imagine how he was still standing. Just a baby, at 4 months old, Trooper should be chasing toys, playing without a care in the world, and soaking up everything good about being a puppy. He should be carefree, he should be getting socialized. Unfortunately, that isn’t his reality. We may never know what happened. While it was suggested he may have been hit by a car, his injuries told a worse story. It turns out it’s a combination of old and new trauma, including fractures to his jaw that had begun healing. Trooper’s suffering over a period of time is just unimaginable. RBARI said yes because Trooper needed help immediately. There was no time to wait. Now we’re asking for your help to make that possible. Through it all, Trooper never stopped wanting to live. Even with his face swollen and bleeding, he was still trying to eat. His tail kept wagging and he was asking for kisses. The hospital staff quickly fell in love with Trooper because of who he is despite everything. Trooper has begun the long process of healing, but healing doesn’t mean the crisis is over. He is unable to be the playful puppy he should be. His jaw fractures need time to mend and there are still unknowns about how this will affect him as he grows. Let’s give back to this sweet boy who deserves the best. 7/23/26 Update Thanks to all of you, sweet Trooper has officially been released from the hospital and is now recovering in foster care. One of the hardest things to imagine is a puppy left scared and alone, waiting for someone to stop and care. Cliff was found on the side of the road likely after being hit by a car. Moon’s Second Chance 🌙

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Moon is only 2 years old, a baby, who has already been through so much. After nearly a week of not eating, vomiting, and growing weaker, she was rushed into emergency care. This wasn’t her first fight and she had already endured a previous obstruction surgery. Now, it was happening again. RBARI said yes to Moon the minute she needed help. During surgery, doctors discovered a sponge-like piece of foam lodged in her intestines, causing a dangerous blockage. Her body had been struggling for days with her intestines severely inflamed, her system dehydrated and under extreme stress. Thanks to the medical team, the obstruction was carefully relieved without more invasive surgery. This wasn’t vital to her survival given her history. But Moon’s fight is far from over. 💔 She now has fluid in her abdomen and requires ongoing testing. 🩵 She remains hospitalized with a feeding tube and intensive monitoring. 🩵 Her body is still working to stabilize, heal, and recover. Moon is gentle, loving, and incredibly strong. She deserves the chance to feel safe again and eventually find her forever. RBARI stepped in without hesitation — but they can’t do it alone. Please consider donating to support Moon’s continued care and recovery. Every dollar helps provide lifesaving treatment, comfort, and hope. Because of you, RBARI can keep saying “yes” to dogs like Moon. Because every life matters — and Moon’s story isn’t over yet. 4/14/26 Update Moon’s hospitalization has exceeded $10,000 and continues to grow as she remains in intensive care. Moon still needs 24-hour specialist care, including IV fluids, nutrition support (NG tube), and close monitoring of swelling and the fluid found in her abdomen, to ensure her body continues to recover. The good news - Moon is heading in the right direction! There is less fluid in her abdomen, and her medical team is hopeful she may be able to start trying small amounts of food on her own soon. 6/20/26 Update Just like that…Moon stole the hearts of her new family and was in and out of the shelter in no time at all! We are beyond thrilled for sweet Moon and so thankful to YOU! Ducky was the victim of a serious and unexplained trauma. We were told she may have fallen from a chair, but the extent of her injuries tells us it was something much more severe. Although we don’t know exactly what caused her injuries we knew RBARI had to step in and get her the care she needs. When Ducky arrived, she was weak, struggling to maintain her body temperature, and showing signs of serious head trauma. Her body was so weak, she was struggling to do much more than just lay still. But Ducky isn’t giving up, and neither are we. With hospitalization and supportive care, Ducky has started to show us small but hopeful signs. She is becoming more alert, moving around and eating regularly from a syringe. Right now, Ducky’s 24-hour care includes monitoring and supportive treatment. She has also gotten diagnostics to understand the full extent of her injuries. Ducky remains in an incubator, needing help to regulate her temperature. Head trauma is unpredictable, and we don’t yet know the full extent of her injuries or if there will be lasting neurological damage. But what we do know is that Ducky deserves the chance to keep fighting. Please help us get her the help she needs. We can’t do this without your generous support. 4/18/26 Update We are saddened to share that after lots of love and medical attention, Ducky has crossed the rainbow bridge. We are so thankful for all the support Ducky was shown and the continued support for RBARI's animals. 5/6/26 Update Thank you to everyone who supported this little cutie on her healing journey. Help Ru and Paul Grow Up Strong

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Paul & Ru should be crazy teenage kittens by now, chasing toys, climbing furniture, and getting into harmless trouble. Instead, when they arrived from animal control, they were barely clinging to life. At six months old, they should each weigh about six pounds. Paul & Ru weigh under three each. They are so tiny, so weak, and malnourished that their adult teeth were the only sign of their real age. Their little bodies were fighting severe upper and lower respiratory infections, leaving them exhausted from just trying to breathe. 💔 It’s hard to describe just how filthy they were. Their tails, ears, and feet were coated in thick, black, greasy layers of neglect that came off in chunks. For days, Paul and Ru were too sick to lift their little heads, let alone walk around. They were terrified and unsure of what human touch meant, yet they allowed us to give them the gentle care they desperately needed. They were accepting syringe feeding, a sign they began to trust us. As they stabilize and begin eating on their own, we’re hoping they will be well enough for a soft bath to finally wash away all that they have endured. Beneath the grime and illness, Paul and Ru are emerging as mellow, sweet babies who just want comfort. But they are still fragile as they fight to recover. They are still depending on us and we depend on generous donors like you. With our Medical Fund stretched so thin from emergency medical rescues, Paul and Ru remind us yet again how desperately these cats need us and how vital this fund is to being able to say YES to every animal brought to our door. Your support gives them the warmth, safety, medication, and time they need to grow into the healthy young cats they were meant to be. 3/18/26 Update RBARI is happy to share that these cuties are healing, slowly but surely. Their infections are beginning to clear, and they are putting on some much-needed weight. These adorably sweet kittens are still receiving supportive care as they regain strength. They would love to find them a foster home where Paul & Ru can continue healing together, as foster homes make such a tremendous difference in the recovery of fragile kittens. 6/23/26 Update Thanks to the care and support from all of you, Ru and Paul have fully healed and recovered. They have been adopted, and we are so grateful they get to spend the rest of their days in their forever home together!

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Ariel’s story is the kind of cruelty we don’t want to believe is real. This terrified little girl was brought to animal control with a severe respiratory infection and horrifying wounds. Chunks of skin were sloughing off Ariel's tiny body. Her fur was matted to raw, painful patches. According to the woman who had been feeding her, she had watched children throw liquid on Ariel days earlier. Her wounds look like chemical burns. Ariel needed immediate help, so RBARI stepped in without a second thought. ❤️ Ariel is ear-tipped, meaning at some point she was trapped, spayed, and released. Despite those good intentions, Ariel was still hurt by humans. By the time she reached the shelter, she was so scared and painful that an exam wasn’t possible. She was rushed to the hospital for a sedated exam, diagnostics, and wound care. After suffering so much pain, every moment mattered for Ariel. Her body tells the story of what she endured. But her eyes tell the story of a cat who wants to live and hopes to trust. Ariel is receiving intensive medical treatment to treat her burns, manage infection, ease her pain, and support her fragile immune system. Healing chemical wounds is slow, painful, and expensive, but Ariel deserves every chance at comfort after what was done to her. Ariel didn’t choose what happened to her. But today, we can choose to give her comfort and safety, so she can begin to heal from the outside in. Please consider donating to this sweet girl. Let’s help her trust, let’s give her the comfort she should’ve had all along. 6/27/26 Update Thanks to all of you for supporting Ariel on her healing journey. Because of you, Ariel was able to make a full recovery, and she has been adopted into her forever home. We are so grateful.

Rocky’s Shocking Condition Tells the Story His Owner Didn’t

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

When we rescued Rocky, what we found was far worse than anything described to us. This tiny guinea pig had been silently suffering for too long. Upon surrender, “a little crustiness” was mentioned, but the reality was so much more heartbreaking. Rocky had no poop in his cage, bloody nasal discharge and nails and teeth so overgrown they were spiraling in all directions. It is a true miracle this little boy was still eating. Once safe at RBARI, Rocky went straight to the vet. What they found was devastating. A golf-ball-sized mass of impacted fecal material was blocking his perineal pouch, leaving him unable to poop. His teeth were severely overgrown and painful, his nails curling from neglect and he had a large abscess under his chin. Rocky underwent gentle but intensive medical care. His abscess was treated, aspirated and sent out for diagnostics and his impacted feces was removed (the size was shocking!). He is finally pooping again, finally comfortable, and finally safe. Rocky’s recovery is just beginning. More dental care, imaging, abscess treatment, and possible surgery lie ahead for this little guy. That’s where we need you. After surviving unimaginable neglect, Rocky’s medical care will be significant. Every gift truly matters for the smallest, most vulnerable lives. Rocky is proof that even the tiniest animal deserves big love. Thank you for helping us give him the comfort, care, and love he has waited too long for.

Too Many Have Failed Laney, We Need to Put an End to Her Hurt

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Laney’s body told the truth before we even had a chance to ask questions. 💔 When she came into animal control, she was so emaciated that every bone was visible. Not “thin.” Not “underweight.” Starving. The kind of condition that makes your stomach drop—because you know her body fought as long as it could. RBARI stepped in the moment we learned about her and rushed her straight to emergency care. At first, there were a few days that felt hopeful. She was eating. Resting. Letting herself relax for the first time in who knows how long. Her bloodwork confirmed what we feared—clear signs of starvation, including anemia—so she was placed on a slow, carefully monitored re-feeding plan. Laney was so hungry, but her body needed nutrition introduced gently, because going too fast can be dangerous in cases like hers. Then, she took a sudden turn. Laney began vomiting and had to be transferred to a specialty hospital for advanced diagnostics and the possibility of a blood transfusion. It was one of those moments where your heart sinks, because you realize you’re not “past the worst” yet—you’re still actively trying to keep her here. Thankfully, her anemia resolved after an iron injection, and her bloodwork held steady. But imaging showed foreign material in her abdomen—likely from desperately eating whatever she could find just to survive out there. There wasn’t a clear obstruction, but her medical team had to monitor her closely, keep her on fluids, and continue very slow feedings while her body tried to stabilize. Laney spent Christmas hospitalized, fighting to recover from the extreme neglect her body had been forced to endure. The only silver lining? — She had a doting medical team at her side, rooting for her every step of the way. And then, finally, the news we’d been holding our breath for: Laney's condition had stabilized. Her blood levels stayed strong. No obstruction. No transfusion. Safe enough to leave the hospital. Today, she’s now recovering in a loving foster home—with a veterinary technician who can give her the kind of careful, experienced support she still needs. But here’s the part we have to be real about: Even though Laney is doing better physically, her case has been intensive—and her medical costs are still extremely high for the rescue. Laney survived the unimaginable. 💙 If you’re able, please consider donating to help cover Laney’s ongoing medical care. If you cannot donate, sharing still matters more than you know. Thank you, everyone! 4/15/26 Update Thanks to the wonderful support from all of you, Laney has recovered beautifully and is finally ready for adoption! Our special survivor Laney is finally ready for adoption! She is incredibly sweet and has been nothing but happy and strong throughout this ordeal. She craves human attention and gets along with her doggie foster sibling.

She was Once Living in Pain, Now She's Ready to Live in Comfort

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Layla arrived with a heartbreaking secret no one expected — a large, heavy tumor hanging from her backside. This loving 6-year-old silver Lab should be worrying about belly rubs and cozy naps. Instead, she was surrendered to animal control because her family was moving and they neglected to mention the mass that has been growing on her for two years. It wasn’t until Layla was brought out of the car that the full reality became clear. The tumor is large, uncomfortable, and affects her mobility. The tumor, however, doesn’t stop Layla from being the same gentle, trusting, and affectionate dog she had always been. Today, in RBARI’s care, Layla is at the hospital preparing for surgery to remove the mass. As she begins this next step, she needs a place to heal. Home for the holidays has a very special meaning for Layla, it means comfort, care and a chance to heal. Our veterinary team is cautiously hopeful. Layla’s bloodwork is encouraging, and we are hopeful the tumor has not spread. A biopsy will guide next steps, but this is only the beginning of her healing journey. Through it all, Layla has been pure joy. She does her best to live a normal life while carrying pain she never should have known. Because of you, Layla won’t face surgery, or the future, alone. And then—once all is said and done—it's on to finding her what she deserves most: her Forever! Please consider donating to help support Layla's recovery journey. Every ounce of support matters and is incredibly appreciated—by us, AND by Layla. 💛

Tofurkey

You can help save Tofurkey from his unfortunate fate

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

This two-year-old bully was overbred and set up to suffer from the very start. Exotic microbullies often struggle to breathe due to narrowed nostrils and elongated snouts, and many can barely walk because of deformed front legs and unstable hips. As if that pain weren’t enough, his former owner cropped his ears purely for appearance. Tofurkey came to us through local animal control after his former owner was arrested. Beyond his congenital defects, he was in critical condition, bleeding from a prolapsed urethra—an agonizing issue sadly common in this breed. He required immediate surgery. He was also not neutered, and we ensured that was done to prevent further suffering caused by irresponsible breeding. We are now working toward additional surgery to help Tofurkey breathe more comfortably. With multiple procedures and major changes ahead, it is crucial that he find a foster or adoptive home as soon as possible. While he will never live a truly normal life, he can walk, play, and run, though he sometimes drags his legs to manage ongoing pain. Tofurkey is overwhelmed and in need of compassion. Whether through donations, fostering, or adoption, you can give him a chance at stability and comfort. He has endless love to offer—he just needs someone willing to give it back. 4/24/26 Update Thanks to all of you, Tofurkey received the emergency surgery he desperately needed and is healing and breathing a little easier these days. He can run and walk in his own quirky way, though he does best on soft surfaces.

Domino Has Had a History of Medical Needs, You can Help Make a Difference in His Future

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Domino is a young cat whose life has depended on urgent medical care more than once. This resilient baby is one of the sweetest we’ve ever had the privilege to care for. His repeated urinary blockages are only one part of his story, and our goal is to help him live a full life free from this painful condition. This type of medical emergency can become life-threatening within hours. Domino once lived in a loving home, but the repeated, costly care he required became more than his owner could afford. That is how he came to RBARI. Without immediate hospitalization, Domino would not have survived. Though this reality is scary, this sweet boy is making progress. His kidney values, once a major concern, have stabilized. His urinary tract is currently unblocked, and he is no longer suffering the intense pain he once endured. These improvements give us hope that the future is bright. Even with this progress, Domino remains high-risk, especially in a stressful shelter. He currently depends on daily medication, but if his condition worsens, that may not be enough. Specialized surgery could offer a solution, though it is costly and only a last resort. 6/15/26 Update Due to recurrent issues with blocking, Domino recently went through a specialized PU surgery - painful, but lifesaving. While in recovery, his foster has had nothing but good things to say about him. He's sweet, adventurous, and playful, and loves their chocolate lab! His favorite activities (when not in recovery) are playing with his favorite worm-on-a-string wand toy and "helping" his foster family with their daily chores. Domino is currently on daily medication to help lessen his stress and pain, and will likely need to stay on medication going forward. He is also on a specialized urinary diet (which he eats like a pro!), which will help support his long-term urinary health. Domino loves his people and always wants to be around them. He would do best in a home where there will always be someone there for him and where he can run and explore to his heart's content! Thank you for your support!

🐾 Millie’s Silent Cry: A Senior Sheepadoodle Who Still Believes in Kindness 🐾

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Millie is a senior Sheepadoodle whose body tells a story no animal should ever have to live through. She was severely emaciated, her ribs and hip bones sharply visible beneath thinning fur. Her ears were painfully infected. Her coat had been shaved unevenly, with matted clumps still hanging from her fragile body, as if care had been started—and then abandoned. Millie didn’t cry. She didn’t growl. She didn’t resist. She simply stood there, weak but trusting, as if she still believed someone would finally help her. Years of neglect had taken their toll, but not her spirit. Even in pain and starvation, Millie leaned gently into human touch. She wanted comfort. She wanted safety. She wanted relief. Millie’s road to recovery is long and uncertain. She needs immediate medical care, specialized nutrition to safely restore her weight, treatment for painful ear infections, grooming to free her skin, and continued monitoring to help her fragile body heal. Senior dogs like Millie require time, patience, and extensive veterinary support—and those costs add up quickly. But Millie deserves this chance. She deserves warm meals given slowly and lovingly. Clean ears that no longer ache. A soft bed where her bones don’t press against the floor. And the dignity of spending her remaining years knowing what kindness feels like. 💛 How You Can Help Millie’s life can still be beautiful — but only with your support. Your donation will go directly toward her medical care, rehabilitation, and comfort as she begins the long journey back to health. Because of you, Millie can trade survival for healing, and neglect for love. Every dollar gives Millie the compassion she has waited a lifetime to receive. Cordelia lay injured and unable to move, while Temperance stayed firmly beside her despite the danger around them each night, hoping someone would help. Just six weeks old, Cordelia had suffered a traumatic degloving injury to her tail, leaving exposed tissue and intense swelling. She also battled deep bruising, raw scrapes, a torn ear tip, and a painful respiratory infection—evidence of a violent attack no baby animal should ever endure. Through it all, Temperance never wavered. She curled tightly against her hurting sister, purring softly and keeping watch as if she understood Cordelia’s fragile state. Her devotion has been a lifeline and reassurance that Cordelia was never alone. Through it all, Temperance never wavered. Help Give Abraham a Fighting Chance

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Abraham was found crying under a car, alone and only 5 weeks old. Our cattery was already full, but the moment we saw him limping toward us, yelping in pain, we knew we had to say yes. A rushed transport to Country Willow Veterinary Hospital confirmed the worst: Abraham had a painful spiral fracture in his front leg. At his tiny size, he isn’t a candidate for surgery yet. His leg is currently splinted- his cast almost bigger than he is—and he’s on pain medication, strict rest, and regular rechecks. Even with devoted care, there is still a chance he could lose his leg. However, with time and proper care, Abraham can still grow into a beautiful, happy life. His purrs will get louder, his snuggles longer, and his world so much safer. All this little kitten needs is love and healing. Your generosity gives Abraham the dignity, comfort, and urgent medical treatment he deserves. This is exactly why RBARI’s Medical Fund exists—to say yes when there is pain, fear, and nowhere else to turn. 6/27/26 Update Thank you to everyone who supported Abraham on his healing journey. He is fully healthy and recovered and has been adopted into his forever home, who has named him Bubba. He loves to make biscuits, loves his dog brother Goober, and also loves to play with his other cat sibling who is blind.

Terrified, sweltering in the heat, and suffering from a deep gash above his eye, Conan was rescued by a state trooper from the median of Highway 280 in Newark. Thanks to the quick action of state troopers and Paterson Animal Control, we were able to bring him to safety and provide the medical care he so desperately needed. When Conan first arrived at the shelter, he was timid and withdrawn. But over time, he’s done a complete 180! Now he’s an absolute attention hog! He currently lives in one of our free-roam rooms, where he’s made plenty of kitty friends. As much as we adore seeing his sweet face every day, it’s time for this lovable boy to meet his forever family. We’ll be honest, all of us here at RBARI are surprised Conan hasn’t been adopted yet. He has been with us since August, and he is more than ready for a home of his own. He’s sweet, affectionate, handsome, and he absolutely adores other cats. With your support, RBARI can continue to cover Conan’s medical expenses and help him find the loving home he deserves. Whisper, Harry, and Barry

Their Only Home Was a Car. You Can Change Their Story.

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Three little dogs just took their first true breath of freedom and safety. Whisper, Harry, and Barry were rescued from a life of homelessness inside a car after their owner could no longer care for them. Their entire world had been the cramped backseat they shared. They were dirty, scared, and surviving in the only “home” they knew. Mama Whisper is suffering from a severe heart murmur that now requires urgent medical attention. She’s headed to the hospital to determine how advanced her condition has become. Her puppies are receiving real medical care for the first time in their lives. And even after everything she’s endured, Whisper remains incredibly sweet, leaning gently into every hand that reaches out with kindness. Harry and Barry, her 8-month-old pups, have grown up knowing nothing but instability. Harry, the brindle boy, was terrified at first, but quickly softened once he realized he was finally safe. Barry, scruffy and tan, still trembles with fear, but his eyes show how deeply he longs to trust and feel love. All three are now decompressing—fragile and unsure, but slowly discovering what it means to be clean, to have space to walk, a quiet place to rest, and the comfort of gentle, patient hands. RBARI can't cover these expenses alone. Will you help these three pups thrive again?

Simba had an 11-inch stick lodged in his esophagus.

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Meet Simba, a tiny doodle puppy whose courage has already defied the odds. His rescue began with a terrifying discovery—Simba had a bone stuck in his throat, and his little body was shutting down. The farm he came from was prepared to euthanize him because of this. By the time RBARI reached him, Simba needed emergency hospitalization and an extremely delicate life-saving surgery. Without immediate intervention, he would not have survived. When the veterinarians began the procedure, the reality was even worse than anyone imagined. They found an 11-inch stick lodged all the way from his esophagus down into his stomach—an impossibly large object for such a small puppy to endure. On top of that, they removed chicken bones from his stomach, adding to the danger he had been silently suffering through for more than a week. Because of the excellent care he received, Simba made it through surgery. He is now in recovery at the hospital, finally experiencing relief after unimaginable pain. He’s beginning to wag his tail again, to lift his head, to discover what comfort feels like. Simba’s emergency care saved his life; however, it came at no small cost. Dogs like Simba can only be saved when people like you choose to fight for them. Simba is now searching for a foster-to-adopt home, a place where he’ll know safety and love instead of fear and suffering. His future is bright—but only if we can continue providing the care he needs.

Found Trembling, Barely Able to Stand, & Severely Emaciated After Prolonged Starvation

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Esmeralda’s body gave out long before anyone came for her. When rescuers at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge first saw her, it stopped them in their tracks. Esmeralda was trembling, barely able to stand, her frail body caving in on itself. Her ribs and spine jutted through her skin. Her face and paws were painfully swollen. Her eyes looked exhausted— she was running out of reasons to keep going. At barely 20 pounds, Esmeralda wasn’t just thin—she was starving. Her body had begun consuming itself just to survive. This level of emaciation doesn’t happen overnight; it comes from prolonged, relentless neglect. And still… this girl held on. 💔 With emergency support from their partners at Pitties & Pals Rescue, Esmeralda was rushed to the hospital, where she required an emergency blood transfusion to stabilize. Bloodwork revealed critically low protein levels and severe anemia. For days, she fought quietly in intensive care, receiving IV fluids and a carefully managed re-feeding plan—because feeding her too quickly could have been fatal. Slowly but surely, Esmeralda regained enough strength to leave the hospital. But the road ahead is long: X-rays revealed hip dysplasia and arthritis—adding even more pain to a body that’s already endured far too much. She remains weak and unsteady, still dangerously underweight for a dog who should be 35–40 pounds, and she's looking at routine monitoring, medications, a very specialized nutrition plan, and ongoing veterinary care. But Esmeralda’s emergency hospitalization, diagnostics, medications, and follow-up care have already climbed into the thousands—and they're still climbing. Please consider donating today to support Esmeralda’s ongoing medical care. Every ounce of support matters in this gentle girl’s recovery. ❤️‍🩹

Help Riley from a life of neglect

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Meet Riley. His story is one of heartbreak and quiet resilience. This gentle senior Cavalier mix was surrendered to a crowded shelter. He was confused and scared, yet still greeted all with shy, hopeful tail wags in hopes that someone would save him. His body tells the story of neglect: raw, itchy skin from chronic allergies, painful ear infections, and untreated dry eye. But through it all, his spirit never dimmed. Riley still looks to people with trust, asking only for love and care. Now safe, Riley is finally receiving the devoted medical care he’s long needed. His healing journey will take time, but his sweet nature and forgiving heart remind us to never turn away—because no animal should have to suffer in silence when love can heal. 💙 Please consider making a donation to RBARI to help cover Riley’s care and support. They are helping so many animals that they want to be able to give each one the love and care it deserves. With your help, it's possible! Healing begins the moment someone chooses to care. From all of us at RBARI, and from Riley, we thank you. 💕 Update 11/15/25 Riley, now known as Phineas, is doing wonderfully! He's already been to the vet three times and the fur around his eyes is all grown back. He has eyelashes now and most of the spots that he had are cleared up, and even the irritation in his skin is much better. His ear still seems to be causing him some pain and they are talking about possibly some drastic measures which I hope we don’t have to resort too, but if he’s in pain all the time we would need to consider it. He is the most loving sweetest dog that I’ve ever had. He sleeps about 90% of the day but when he’s up, he’s really up and he loves absolutely everybody, every dog, and every person, so we are thrilled to have him and can’t thank you all enough.

Baby and her brother Sammy shouldn’t have been born into pain. Victims of irresponsible breeding, these puppies have faced devastating medical conditions, and we need your help to continue to support their medical care. Sammy was born with a life-threatening deformity that left him unable to defecate, requiring urgent intervention to save his life. Now, his sister Baby is fighting her own battle. At only 9 months old and weighing just 5 pounds, Baby began to limp. The diagnosis was Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, a painful condition caused by genetics, trauma, or malnutrition-all risks tied to irresponsible breeding practices. The only way to give Baby a pain-free future is with FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) surgery on her right hip. This sweet little Yorkie-poo girl deserves the chance to run, play, and live like all puppies should. With surgery and recovery, Baby will finally have that chance. After two weeks of crate rest, she can begin gentle leash walks and, with time, will be on the path to a normal, happy life. But this surgery will not come at a low cost, especially as this rescue has so many other animals to care for. 💙 Please give today to help Baby to honor every animal hurt by careless breeding but saved by compassion. No amount is too small and every donation is appreciated more than you know. Thank you! Update 10/22/25 Baby's surgery was a success, and she has also been spayed! Early one morning, a call came in from animal control about a critically ill toy poodle who had just arrived—trembling uncontrollably, unable to stand, and in obvious distress. At just 2 to 3 years old and weighing only 3.5 pounds—less than half of what she should—Milkshake’s condition was heartbreaking. She was rushed to the emergency hospital, where her tiny body told a devastating story of long-term neglect. Severely underweight, badly matted, and dangerously frail, Milkshake was physically, emotionally, and medically depleted. Her vacant eyes were filled with pain, confusion, and the faintest flicker of hope. Still unable to stand, she began receiving round-the-clock supportive care. The cause of her collapse wasn’t immediately clear. Was it the result of an underlying medical condition, or simply the toll of prolonged neglect? Diagnostics were initiated to find answers, and in the meantime, the veterinary team focused on stabilizing her fragile condition. Slowly, there were signs of progress. Under close supervision, she began eating small amounts of food. She became a little more alert, a little more responsive. The tremors that once overtook her body began to ease, even though she remained too weak to stand. Most importantly, she was no longer in pain—and she was surrounded by love. Her condition remains guarded. An ultrasound is scheduled to check for a liver shunt, one possible explanation for her symptoms. Depending on those results, she may also need an MRI to evaluate for GME, a serious autoimmune disease that can affect the brain and spinal cord. Milkshake has a long road ahead. But for the first time in her life, she doesn’t have to walk it alone. Please be part of her healing journey.

Beth Needed Emergency Surgery: Will You Help?

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

TW: Graphic Images This sweet cat named Beth had been living outside for weeks and was being cared for by a kind resident who noticed she was pregnant and in need of help. When her condition began to declined—as they later learned, she was stuck in active labor—she was brought to the local shelter where they learned of her plight. It was immediately clear something was horribly wrong. An amniotic sac was partially protruding, and her hind end was infested with maggots—likely from lying in the heat, exhausted and exposed, struggling to give birth on her own. Beth was rushed to the veterinary partner of RBARI, where her situation quickly escalated into an emergency. One of the kittens was lodged in a breech position, and Beth required an emergency c-section to survive. Thanks to the fast action of the team and expert care she received, Beth made it through—and incredibly, all five of her babies survived as well. Two of the kittens were tiny and fragile, and for a time, they weren’t sure they’d pull through. But with love, warmth, and round-the-clock care in one of our amazing foster homes, every single one is now doing great. Beth is now healing well, and her babies are growing stronger every day. But this emergency care came at no small cost, and with the needs of 6 total cats, RBARI needs your help urgently to help care for these babies. Will you please help them on their healing journey?

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

At just 2 months old, Pym was found alone on the streets of Paterson—her tiny body wracked with pain, her paw crushed beyond repair. Bones were exposed. Maggots crawled through the wound. She was slowly dying. But Pym wasn’t ready to give up. Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc was contacted and immediately rushed her to the vet. There she was stabilized and given pain relief. Sadly, her injury is too severe to save her limb and amputation is her only chance at survival. And yet, through it all, Pym has remained bright-eyed and brave. This little warrior still purrs, still plays, and still believes in the kindness of people. 💛 Pym’s spirit hasn’t been broken—but we need your help to give her the future she deserves. From Discarded To Loved: Pancake Needs You

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Dumped at animal control in the sweltering heat, Pancake was barely surviving. He has deformed legs, a twisted spine, and a likely compromised airway. He can’t walk, he has to army crawl. This poor baby is only 5 years old and is believed to be an exotic micro-bulldog, or Frenchie, that was bred for his looks, not health. So when the medical issues became too much, his breeder discarded and abandoned him. Thankfully, Pancake landed in the safe and loving care of RBARI and is undergoing a full medical workup. He may need soft palate surgery, along with treatment for his orthopedic condition. However, he has the sweetest and most gentle soul. ❤️ Without generous donors like you, RBARI can't give Pancake the care he so desperately needs and deserves. They are relying on you to help pay his medical bills. Can you please support sweet Pancake and help give him a life full of love and health? Thank you!

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Shadow was found lying helpless on his side, his body fighting to survive with a wound so deep and infected that it looked like his bone might be exposed. The person who found him stayed by his side, refusing to leave him alone in his pain while they waited for help. Shadow’s injury wasn’t new—he’d been carrying that agony for days, maybe weeks. But when rescuers arrived, everything changed. Thanks to the quick action of compassionate people and a rescue network that refused to give up on him, Shadow was rushed to the vet for emergency care. He underwent surgery to clean and close the wound, with a drain placed to help it heal. After which, one of RBARI’s dedicated volunteers brought him home to begin recovering in a quiet, loving space where he finally felt safe. Senior Chihuahua Found Weak and Emaciated

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Rosemary is a senior Chihuahua who was found wandering, weak and emaciated, with a massive, ulcerated mammary tumor hanging painfully beneath her. She was barely able to walk, likely due to both the weight of the tumor and possible neurological issues. Her teeth were in severe condition—many already missing or decaying—and she was dangerously anemic and malnourished. She underwent emergency surgery to remove multiple mammary tumors, was spayed, and received a major dental, with most of her teeth extracted. The biopsy results are pending to determine if the tumors are cancerous. RBARI says how incredibly sweet and friendly she is despite being in a life-threatening condition. Now safe and recovering in comfort and love, Rosemary is eating well and resting peacefully. She will be evaluated for adoption after her stray hold ends. Rosemary was painfully neglected but is now surrounded by love and care. Will you please join us in her healing journey? Every donation makes a difference. Thank you! Update 8/8/25 Rosemary had surgery to remove multiple tumors. Two were benign, but the largest was cancerous. There’s no sign of spread — and for now, she’s recovering beautifully and hoping for a home to call her own.

She Gave Birth on a Cold Shelter Floor & Deserves Better

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

A beautiful mother husky was picked up as a stray and was curled tightly on a cold cement floor—giving birth in the middle of an overcrowded, inner-city shelter. With no comfort, no safety, and no quiet, she instinctively tucked her newborns beneath her body. She refused the blanket she was offered and instead used her raised bed as a shield, which was the only protection she had to offer her babies. When RBARI came to her rescue, she showed teeth when they approached her, but not aggression, more like desperation. And yet, the moment a kind hand reached out to leash her and gently move her babies to a blanket, she softened. She knew they were there to help. Still, they had to leave them behind and quickly mobilize her to find a foster placement. As one overwhelmed rescue after another had to decline, RBARI and A Pathway to Hope joined forces to give this mama and her seven newborns a chance. They couldn't say no. Now, they need you to be part of their rescue story. Please, make a gift to help cover their emergency care, transport, and daily needs. To secure their placement, they had to move another dog and hire a pet sitter—all unplanned but all necessary to say yes to these lives. Your donation means warmth, safety, and a fighting chance for this brave mama and her newborns. Together, we can make sure this family’s life is filled with love and not fear. Thank you!

Hank’s Face Was Swollen & His Body Scarred

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

We wish Hank could share his heartbreaking story of survival with us. He appeared in a cat colony in Paterson, his face severely swollen. Friendly and far too docile to fend for himself, Hank was likely abandoned on the streets and left to suffer. By the time he was picked up and brought to animal control, he was weak, in pain, and desperately waiting for proper care. Overnight, his condition worsened. The abscess on his face ruptured at animal control. When RBARI arrived the next day, Hank was in heartbreaking sight—hurting, covered in old wounds and scars, but still so sweet, still purring as he sought affection. Now safe with RBARI, Hank is finally receiving the care he has gone without for far too long. But his journey is far from over. In addition to the ruptured abscess, this poor guy is FIV positive and has serious kidney disease. He’s begun treatment and will need ongoing veterinary care in the days ahead. Hank is only about 6 years old—but his body bears the weight of a much harder life. Please help us give him the comfort, healing, and second chance he so deeply deserves. 🐾 Donate today to support Hank’s recovery. His bills are stacking up, and this rescue can't do it alone. With your help, they can save Hank and continue saving vulnerable local animals like him. Update 6/27/25 This rescue is happy to share that Hank is successfully on the road to recovery after receving proper treatments and care. He has a soft bed, full meals, and the second chance he’s always deserved. His journey is a powerful reminder of the lifesaving work happening every day for animals in our local community. Update 7/17/25 Hank is continuing to make great progress and can hopefully be placed for adoption soon to find his forever home! Flash was fighting for his life after being hit by a truck and left without care overnight. When he came to RBARI, he was in horrific pain and life-threatening condition—suffering from internal bleeding, a jaw injury, and a fractured front leg. X-rays revealed that his jaw, while severely swollen, wasn’t fractured and is expected to heal with time. His leg fracture is healing well with splinting, rest, and continued care. Thankfully, RBARI acted quickly and got him the urgent care he needed. Flash is doing fantastically in recovery, he's eating well, and walking on his splint with ease. He’s now in foster care with one of his doctors, who shared just how well he’s adjusting at home: “Flash is doing great at home! He fit in right away, and all my other pets took to him immediately. He loves following my 2-year-old daughter around and lays right by her crib whenever she’s in there. He really is such a good dog.” ❤️ What's most important is that Flash is healing well; however, RBARI is still left with the costly bill from his surgery, x-rays, and treatments to recover. Emergencies Don’t Wait — And Neither Can Cookie 🐾

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

At just nine months old, this beautiful cat named Cookie was surrendered and brought to RBARI with a horrific and infected wound to her backside—near her rectal and groin area—that left her unable to urinate and in desperate need of emergency surgery. Cookie needed a specialized procedure to assess whether her internal organs had been damaged. Sweet Cookie made it through the delicate life-saving surgery and is already winning hearts with her resilience, affection, and how incredibly sweet she is, meowing for attention. Her surgical team was able to successfully close the deep wound near her hind end. An additional abscess was found higher up on her lower back and was treated and drained. Despite the complexity of her condition, Cookie is now peeing and pooping on her own, eating well, and soaking up every bit of love from the hospital staff. She still has surgical drains in place, so she’ll remain hospitalized with round-the-clock care to ensure she's healing well. However, this surprising and large cost spread RBARI thin as they couldn't wait to raise the funds for her to have this urgent surgery. Cookie still needs your help, covering the cost of the medical bills that are stacking up pre and post-surgery to ensure a full recovery. Please consider making a life-saving donation to help give Cookie the second chance she deserves as her life is just getting started. From Pain to Relief: Help Continue to Make Garrett’s Healing Possible

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge has taken yet another urgent medical case. Meet Garrett—an incredibly sweet and gentle young cat found on the streets, who is blind and was barely clinging to life. Estimated to be two years old, he was discovered in Paterson; filthy, sick, covered in feces and mucus, and clearly, too weak to clean himself. He was suffering from a severe upper respiratory infection and a horribly abscessed eye that was close to rupturing. Thankfully, this kind rescue was able to rush him to the hospital just in time. Garrett underwent emergency enucleation surgery, along with a full medical workup and neuter. They are happy to report he's doing great in recovery. Their veterinary team was amazed at how calm and cooperative he remained, even while in obvious pain. But cases like Garrett’s are stretching their resources to the limit. Emergency intakes are constant, and their medical funds are rapidly depleting. Fundraising is incredibly difficult for them right now—but saying “no” means animals like Garrett won’t survive. But this isn't a hopeless case, with proper medical care, Garrett’s prognosis is excellent. Ramapo-Bergen is investing in lives that, with treatment, have every chance at a full recovery. Thanks to compassionate donors like you, your gift will go directly towards the medical care Garrett desperately needs and end his suffering. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you! Update 5/9/25 Garrett is doing great in recovery and getting the love and care he needs from his caretakers. Ella’s Journey: From Pain to Progress – Look Who’s Standing Now!

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

Ella is a sweet, gentle, and beautiful golden retriever, but she's in agonizing pain due to a rare and life-threatening case of tetanus. Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge rushed her to the hospital, as she was unable to walk or stand. This infection is so uncommon that it often goes undetected until it's dangerously advanced. There’s no visible injury, just a silent, devastating illness likely triggered by something as small as a pinprick from a rusty object. Now, she faces paralysis, severe nerve pain, and a long road to recovery. Ella’s only chance of survival is intensive, around-the-clock hospitalization for up to two weeks. That care comes at a staggering cost—estimated at $23,000 for the first week alone. Ella needs continuous sedation, advanced pain management, and close monitoring to make it through. This level of specialized treatment is more than this rescue can manage on its own. But with your help and the kindness of generous donors like you, Ella has a real chance at recovery. She’s alert. She’s responsive. She hasn’t given up, and as of very recently, she is standing! This rescue will not give up on her and hopes that one day she will walk again. Please donate towards Ella’s critical care and recovery and be the difference in giving her a chance to wag her tail again, free of pain. Ella is counting on you. Update 6/25/25 Ella's recovery from tetanus is going very slow, but she has a wonderful foster home (vet and family) to provide all the love and care she needs to get through this and keep her in good spirits. Thank you for your continued support. Update 7/17/25 Ella's recovery is still going slow but she is healing; it will just take some time. Hippo is a short, sweet, and stout 2-year-old male exotic micro bully, weighing about 35 pounds, who spent his holidays suffering and alone; however, we’ve promised him a brighter future this New Year. Surrendered after enduring severe neglect, Hippo’s feet were painfully infected due to overgrown nails that curled into his paw pads, making it nearly impossible for him to walk. His heartbreaking condition could have been prevented with simple nail trimming. Hippo’s nails grew so long that they curled and grew into his paw pads, causing severe pain and infections. We rushed Hippo to the animal hospital for relief, where his feet were cleaned, clipped, and treated, and he was vaccinated and neutered. He now needs ongoing medicated foot soaks to continue his healing process. Hippo is not only adorable, he’s loving and loyal. Porsche is a 1 month old Mix-Breed in Oakland, NJ, who needs $2,000 for Surgery and Treatment.

Oakland, NJ • Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge

On one of the coldest days recently, a kitten’s desperate search for warmth nearly cost him his life. Porsche, a tiny fighter, had climbed into the engine of a running car, unaware of the danger. It wasn’t until the driver heard faint meows while driving that Porsche’s plight was discovered. With the help of the Woodcliff Lake police and a mechanic, Porsche was rescued, but not without injury. His tail had suffered an open fracture during the ordeal. The kind woman who found him tried to nurse him back to health at home but soon realized his injuries needed expert care. Heartbroken, she reached out to Ramapo-Bergen Animal Rescue, explaining, “We have done all we could but can’t afford the medical care he needs. We’re devastated, especially during the holidays.” Porsche arrived at RBARI with most of his tail necrotic, which had shockingly fallen off during a cleaning. He underwent surgery to amputate the remaining portion, and this brave little kitten is now recovering beautifully. Despite everything, Porsche’s playful spirit remains intact—he’s back to chasing toys and nibbling on fingers, bringing joy to everyone around him. Porsche’s medical bills are substantial, and he needs your help to cover the cost of his care. Please donate today to help Porsche start 2025 with a second chance at life. And remember, a quick tap on your car’s hood during cold weather could save a kitten's life. Update 1/24: Through his recovery, Porsche has shown incredible strength and resilience. When Ramapo-Bergen Animal Rescue was contacted, they didn’t hesitate. Andy was immediately hospitalized for pain management and emergency care. X-rays revealed his broken femur, but with orthopedic surgery and a plate, his leg was fixable. Despite his agony, Andy’s tail never stopped wagging—an incredible testament to his unyielding spirit. After his surgery, Andy faced additional challenges. Trauma from the accident caused damage to his urethra, leading to complications that required a second surgery, a perineal urethrostomy (PU). This life-saving procedure was a success, but Andy’s recovery continues. He’ll need crate rest and devoted at-home care in the weeks ahead to heal completely. Surrendered in a garbage bag with his intestines protruding, Tucker’s owners felt helpless about what to do – until we stepped in to provide him with emergency medical care and rescue relief. We can’t imagine the pain this sweet boy is enduring – in a strange place not understanding what is happening to his body. Tucker is suffering from a rectal prolapse, a condition where part of the large intestine comes out the rectum, usually from a weakening of the muscles that support the rectum. Please consider a donation towards Tucker’s hospitalization and surgery at rbari.org/medical. We are hopeful that Tucker’s prolapse can be surgically corrected permanently and that there is not an abundance of necrotic (dead) tissue. The surgery is extremely intricate on delicate skill and must be done by a specialist at a 24-hour specialty hospital to give Tucker the best chance of success. Your gifts allow us to provide comfort and dedicated medical treatment to Tucker. We are so grateful for your friendship at a time when so many deserving animals like Tucker come to our door helpless and in need of urgent care.
