Jimmy
Jimmy Survived the Streets—Now He Needs a Chance to Survive This Tumor
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
For days, Jimmy wandered the streets carrying an enormous tumor on his neck.People spotted him but couldn't get close enough to help. Every day he remained out there, he was forced to live with the weight, discomfort, and uncertainty of a mass that continued to grow while he fought simply to survive. When ThisIsHouston learned about Jimmy's heartbreaking condition, volunteers immediately began searching for him. After an entire weekend of efforts, and with the incredible assistance of the Houston Police Department Northeast Division, Jimmy was finally brought to safety and rushed straight to the emergency hospital. For the first time in who knows how long, Jimmy no longer has to face this alone. Now the search for answers has begun. Veterinarians immediately performed an aspirate of the large mass on Jimmy's neck, which revealed round cells. While doctors suspect it could be a transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) or a plasmacytoma, it's too soon to know for certain. Jimmy still needs extensive diagnostics, including bloodwork, heartworm testing, fecal testing, a tear test, and skin cytology, so his veterinary team can determine exactly what they're dealing with and how best to help him. Right now, even the first 48 hours of diagnostics carry an estimated cost of $915 to $1,657—and that's before any treatment, chemotherapy, surgery, or additional medical care he may need once a diagnosis is confirmed. Despite everything he's endured, Jimmy is finally safe. He no longer has to search for food while carrying a massive tumor or wonder where he'll sleep each night. Instead, he has a team of people determined to fight for him and give him every opportunity to heal. Dogs like Jimmy are so often overlooked because their medical needs are overwhelming. But at ThisIsHouston, we believe every life is worth fighting for, no matter how difficult the road ahead may be. Your donation today will help provide Jimmy with the diagnostics, treatment, and lifesaving medical care he desperately needs. Every dollar brings him one step closer to answers, relief from pain, and the future he has always deserved. Please donate today and help us give Jimmy the second chance he's been waiting for. 7/16/26 Update We have a major update on Jimmy, and thanks to your support, it's one we've been hoping to share. Jimmy has officially made it through surgery. We received the call from his surgeon and while the procedure was long and far more complicated than anyone anticipated, Jimmy did incredibly well. Once surgeons began operating, they discovered the massive tumor had an extensive blood supply and was tightly intertwined with the surrounding tissues. Removing it safely was an enormous challenge. Thankfully, the surgical team was able to preserve both Jimmy's jugular vein and another major vein that drains his shoulder. Because the tumor was so deeply attached, some surrounding muscle had to be removed to ensure the mass could be excised completely. During surgery, Jimmy's red blood cell count dropped, requiring a blood transfusion. His heart rate also became a concern at one point, but thanks to the team's quick intervention, he remained stable. By the end of surgery, his red blood cell count had returned to where it was before the procedure. The mass has now been sent to a laboratory for biopsy, and we expect results within the next 7–10 days. Incredibly, the tumor weighed 5.3 pounds. Just imagine carrying the weight of a bowling ball attached to your neck every single day. Because of your generosity, Jimmy never has to carry that burden again. The team also placed a surgical drain to aid his recovery, and while he was already under anesthesia, Jimmy was neutered as well—one more important step toward a healthier future. As Jimmy was waking up from anesthesia, he regurgitated and was placed on supplemental oxygen as a precaution. Thankfully, his oxygen levels have remained excellent at 99–100%, and his veterinary team is slowly weaning him off the oxygen while monitoring him closely over the next couple of days. Jimmy still has a road ahead of him. He needs continued hospitalization, pain management, medications, careful monitoring, and we're all anxiously awaiting the biopsy results that will determine what comes next. Thank you for standing beside Jimmy through every step of this journey. Your kindness made this lifesaving surgery possible, and because of you, he now has the chance to heal. Please continue to keep Jimmy in your thoughts as he recovers, and if you're able, consider making a donation to help cover his ongoing medical care as we await the next chapter in his story. 7/26/26 Update We finally received the biopsy results from the massive 5.3-pound tumor that was removed from Jimmy's neck. Unfortunately, instead of providing the clear answers we were hoping for, the results have left us with more questions. The biopsy confirmed the presence of mast cells, but the pathologist was unable to definitively identify the type of cancer Jimmy is battling. To get the answers he desperately needs, additional specialized stains have now been sent to a reference laboratory, with results expected to take another two to three weeks. At this point, Jimmy's veterinary team is considering several possible diagnoses, including a plasma cell tumor, transmissible venereal tumor (TVT), mast cell tumor, or lymphoma. Each of these cancers carries a very different prognosis and requires a completely different treatment plan, making an accurate diagnosis absolutely critical before moving forward. Rather than losing precious time while we wait, Jimmy's oncologist recommended beginning a treatment trial with L-asparaginase (L-spar), which Jimmy received today. If the medication reduces the amount of fluid draining from his surgical site and improves the condition of his skin, it could provide an important clue that lymphoma is the underlying cause. Jimmy's medical team is also concerned that his surgical drain continues to produce more fluid than expected. To ensure nothing is being overlooked, they've submitted a sample for bacterial culture to rule out a possible infection. We know this isn't the update everyone was hoping for. We wanted answers. We wanted certainty. Instead, we're facing another stretch of waiting while Jimmy continues to receive the specialized care he needs. But one thing hasn't changed: our commitment to this incredible dog. Jimmy survived life on the streets carrying a tumor that weighed more than five pounds. He endured major surgery, a blood transfusion, and a difficult recovery. Now he's facing another hurdle, and we refuse to stop fighting for him. Every new test, consultation, lab analysis, medication, and day of hospitalization brings additional medical costs, but we're determined to keep moving forward until Jimmy finally has the answers—and treatment—he deserves. If you've been following Jimmy's journey, please consider making another donation today. Your support is what made his lifesaving surgery possible, and it's what will allow us to continue pursuing a diagnosis and providing the specialized care he urgently needs. No matter what the final diagnosis reveals, we want Jimmy to have every opportunity to fight for the future he's waited so long to have. Please donate today and help us continue Jimmy's fight. Every gift, no matter the size, brings him one step closer to healing. 8/2/26 Update Jimmy has been doing so great! He had a recheck with both his oncologist and surgeon this week. His incision has healed well so his staples were removed. They were happy with how everything looked— there’s no redness, discharge, swelling or signs of infection. While his skin is still pretty flaky, he doesn’t appear to have an active infection so for now, we’ll continue using a medicated mousse until he’s able to have medicated baths. His lymph nodes are still mildly enlarged but have gotten slightly smaller and his skin looks calmer than before. Based on his improvement after the L-Spar treatment last week, his oncologist feels much more confident that Jimmy has cutaneous lymphoma but we’re still waiting on stain results from his biopsy to confirm a diagnosis. Jimmy started treatment with CCNU, an oral chemo medication he’ll receive once every three weeks. Most dogs respond well to chemo, but prognosis is about 6 months. Cutaneous lymphoma would be responsible for Jimmy’s widespread skin changes and flakiness. These issues may not completely resolve because they’re part of the cancer itself. but for now we’re hopeful Jimmy responds well to treatment and continues feeling better

Kira
Tiny Kira Is Learning to Walk Again—Help Her Heal
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
At just six weeks old, Kira should be spending her days playing, exploring, and discovering the world around her. Instead, this sweet puppy was found alone as a stray, dragging her injured back leg behind her. When Kira came into ThisisHouston's care, she was taken straight to the veterinarian for evaluation. X-rays revealed that she had suffered fractures to the left side of her pelvis, specifically involving her ischium and pubis. The injuries are older, meaning this tiny puppy had been living with pain and trying to survive on her own for far too long. Despite everything she has endured, Kira remains incredibly sweet and resilient. The good news is that puppies are remarkable healers. Because Kira is so young, her little body has already started repairing itself. Her veterinary team believes she has an excellent chance of making a strong recovery with time, strict kennel rest, and gentle at-home physical therapy exercises. For now, Kira is resting comfortably and receiving the care she needs at Neighborhood Veterinary Centers - Nederland while her rescue team works to give her the best possible chance at a healthy future. Every donation, no matter the size, helps provide medical care, pain management, follow-up evaluations, and the resources needed to help Kira heal. After surviving life on the streets with a painful injury, Kira finally has people fighting for her. Please donate today and help this brave little puppy take her first steps toward a brighter future. 6/24/26 Update Kira has officially settled into a loving foster home, and her foster mom can't stop talking about what an incredible puppy she is. In her words, Kira is "absolutely stunning" and has the sweetest disposition imaginable. While Kira is doing well, she is still on strict kennel rest as her pelvic fractures continue to heal. As you can imagine, this energetic little puppy would much rather be running, playing, and exploring the world around her. It's been difficult for both Kira and her foster family to limit her activity, but everyone knows that giving her body the time it needs to heal now will help ensure the best possible outcome for her future. The good news is that Kira has been handling her recovery like an absolute champion. Despite everything she has been through, she remains happy, loving, and full of puppy charm. Her foster family says she has been the BEST puppy and continues to win hearts everywhere she goes. We are so grateful for the support that has helped Kira receive the care she needs. As her recovery continues, there will still be veterinary expenses associated with follow-up care, monitoring her healing progress, and ensuring she stays comfortable throughout the process. If you'd like to help Kira on her journey to a full recovery, please consider making a donation today. Every contribution helps provide the medical care, follow-up appointments, and support this resilient little girl needs as she heals and prepares for a bright future filled with love, playtime, and all the puppy adventures she deserves. 7/1/26 Update Kira's brace has arrived! It will help support the knuckling in her injured leg as she continues healing and learning to use it properly. We're also thrilled to report that Kira has been doing surprisingly well with her strict kennel rest. For an energetic puppy, that's no small feat! While she'd much rather be running and playing, she's taking recovery like the little champion she is. Right now, the prescription is simple: time, rest, and lots of love. Her tiny body continues to do the incredible work of healing itself, and we're optimistic that every day brings her one step closer to a full recovery. Thank you to everyone who has supported Kira so far. Your generosity has given this sweet puppy the medical care, safety, and comfort she desperately needed after such a difficult start in life. As Kira continues her healing journey, your support is still making a difference. Every donation helps provide her follow-up veterinary care, rehabilitation, and everything she needs to grow into the happy, healthy dog she's meant to be. 7/7/26 Update Kira continues to amaze us every single day! This resilient little girl is still on strict kennel rest while her pelvic fractures continue to heal, and we're happy to report that she's doing wonderfully. While asking a growing puppy to stay quiet is no easy task, Kira has been handling it like a champ (most of the time... she \_is\_ still a puppy, after all!). Her foster family says she's feeling great and keeping everyone on their toes with her adorable personality. Even though she'd much rather be zooming around and playing, she's been incredibly patient as her body does the important work of healing. Recovery from an injury like Kira's takes time, but every day of rest is another step toward the active, happy life she deserves. She'll continue to need follow-up veterinary care to monitor her progress and make sure she's healing exactly as she should. Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared her story, and cheered Kira on throughout her recovery. Because of your generosity, this sweet puppy has gone from surviving on the streets with painful injuries to being safe, loved, and receiving the medical care she needs. If you'd like to continue supporting Kira's journey, please consider making a donation today. Every contribution helps provide her follow-up appointments, rehabilitation, and everything she needs as she grows into the healthy, playful dog we know she's meant to be. 8/8/26 Update We have wonderful news to share—Kira is officially off kennel rest! 🎉 When this sweet German Shepherd mix was found as a tiny six-week-old stray with an injured back leg, her first weeks in rescue looked very different from those of most puppies. Instead of running and playing, Kira spent her days on strict kennel rest with a special brace to support her injured leg while her body healed. But now, she is making up for lost time! Kira is running, playing, exploring the yard, and finally getting to do all the things a puppy should. Kira will likely always have some “knuckling” in her back leg, but her brace provides the support she needs, and she has adapted beautifully. It certainly doesn't slow this girl down! Now about three months old, Kira is showing everyone just how bright and curious she is. She loves toys, investigating everything around her, and being part of whatever her people are doing. She's even making great progress with potty training and already understands how to use potty pads! After such a difficult beginning, Kira is finally getting the puppyhood she deserves. 💜 Thank you to everyone who donated, shared her story, and helped make Kira's recovery possible. Because of your generosity, this little shelter puppy went from struggling with a painful injury to running, playing, and looking forward to her future. Now Kira is ready for the next chapter—a lifetime of adventures, love, and a family of her own. 🐾 Her story started with survival. Thanks to you, it gets to continue with hope, happiness, and a whole lot of puppy zoomies!

Boone
Help Boone Recover From a Devastating Wound
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
This sweet baby was found alone in a ditch with a devastating wound that had become infested with maggots. A concerned person spotted him suffering there and posted online asking for help, hoping someone could save the tiny puppy before it was too late. When we saw the post, we immediately rushed out to find him. What we discovered was heartbreaking. Boone was weak, covered in filth, and severely injured. He was quickly transported to Vergi 24/7 Emergency Hospital, where the veterinary team determined he was dangerously anemic and fighting for his life. The veterinary staff moved quickly, removing the maggots, cleaning his wound, and administering a lifesaving blood transfusion. Thankfully, Boone’s tiny body responded well. His PCV is climbing daily, the tissue remains pink and healthy, and so far he has avoided surgical debridement. But Boone's recovery is far from over. He will need ongoing veterinary care, daily bandage changes, medications, and weeks of wound management as he continues healing in foster care. These critical treatments come at a significant cost, and we urgently need your help to give Boone the future he deserves Despite everything he’s endured, Boone is full of spirit. He’s spunky, affectionate, and proving every single day that he wants to heal and live. Boone was left to suffer alone, but now we have the opportunity to show him that he is safe, loved, and worth fighting for. Please donate today to help Boone continue his recovery journey. Every contribution helps provide the medical care this brave puppy needs to heal and grow into the happy dog he was always meant to be. 5/29/26 Update Boone is now recovering in a loving foster home, where he is soaking up all the attention and care he can get. His foster mom is doing an amazing job helping him through the healing process. While Boone definitely does not enjoy his bandage changes, he is tolerating them like a champ, and his wound continues to heal well. His recovery is far from over, however. In addition to the large wound that required intensive treatment, Boone has numerous smaller wounds and scabs extending from his head to his tail. These injuries will take time to fully heal, and he will continue to need ongoing wound care, medications, and veterinary monitoring in the weeks ahead. It is heartbreaking to think about the rough start Boone had in life, but we are incredibly thankful that he was found, rescued, and given a chance to recover. Today, he is safe, loved, and finally getting the care he deserved all along. We still need help covering Boone's significant veterinary expenses and continued recovery costs. If you are able to donate or share his campaign, it would mean so much to this resilient little puppy and everyone working hard to help him heal. 6/14/26 Update Just over a month ago, Boone was found alone in a ditch, covered in wounds and fighting for his life. The largest wound on his back had become infested with maggots, and he was severely anemic, weak, and suffering. At the time, we didn't know if this tiny puppy would survive. Today, we are thrilled to share a completely different story. Thanks to emergency veterinary care, countless bandage changes, medications, foster care, and an incredible amount of love, Boone has made an amazing recovery. The horrific wound that once covered much of his back has healed beautifully, leaving behind only the tiniest scar. If you look at the final photo, you'll see just how remarkable his transformation has been. Boone is now healthy, happy, and ready for the next chapter of his life. In fact, this sweet boy is currently on his way to Nickel City Canine Rescue, where he will begin his search for the loving forever home he has always deserved. We have no doubt that his playful personality, resilience, and loving spirit will win hearts in no time. None of this would have been possible without your support. Your donations helped provide Boone with lifesaving emergency treatment, a blood transfusion, ongoing wound care, medications, veterinary monitoring, and the resources he needed to heal. Because of your generosity, a puppy who was once abandoned and left to suffer now has a bright future ahead of him. From all of us, thank you for believing in Boone and helping turn a story of neglect and suffering into one of hope, healing, and second chances. Have the very best life, sweet Boone. You deserve every b

Bunny
Help Bunny Heal — A Tiny Puppy’s Second Chance
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Our newest save is Bunny — and she’s as small as her story is heartbreaking. At just 8–9 weeks old and weighing only 3 pounds, this tiny puppy found herself alone on a kind citizen’s front porch. Concerned for her safety, they contacted animal control, and Bunny was brought to the shelter to begin her journey toward healing. Bunny was diagnosed with demodex mange, a skin condition caused by Demodex canis mites. Demodectic mange most often occurs in puppies who have immature immune systems, allowing the number of skin mites to increase rapidly. While it's treatable, it can become serious if a secondary bacterial infection sets in, so her rescuers are acting quickly to give her the best chance at a full recovery. Bunny has already had a veterinary checkup and has started the medication she needs, but she's not out of the woods yet. Ongoing treatment and care come with costs, and this sweet, resilient girl still needs your support to fully recover. Your support will go directly toward: • Time-sensitive veterinary care and follow-ups to monitor her condition • Medication to treat the demodex mange and prevent complications • Nutrient-rich food to rebuild her strength as her body struggles to heal • Basic supplies to keep her clean, comfortable, and protected during the recovery process Bunny is just beginning her life, and she deserves to know warmth, safety, and love instead of discomfort and uncertainty. Every donation, share, and kind word helps give this tiny fighter the healthy, happy future she deserves. If you’d like to be part of Bunny’s journey, we’d be so grateful for your support. Together, we can help her heal, grow, and blossom into the playful puppy she was always meant to be. 5/3/26 Update New rescue Bunny is still settling into her foster home, decompressing, and catching up on some much-needed beauty sleep after everything she has been through. For such a tiny puppy, Bunny has had a lot of change in a very short amount of time — from being found alone and frightened on a stranger’s porch, to shelter intake, veterinary exams, medications, and now finally a safe place where she can simply rest. Right now, rest is exactly what her little body needs. She is continuing her treatment for demodex mange while enjoying soft blankets, good meals, and the comfort of knowing she is no longer alone. Each day of proper nutrition, medication, and stress-free recovery helps her immune system do the hard work of healing her skin. We are so grateful that Bunny is finally somewhere she can just be a puppy. Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, and supported her journey so far. Your kindness is giving this sweet girl the chance to recover in safety and love. We’ll continue to keep you updated as Bunny blossoms!

Nemo
Nemo Needs Us — And We Won’t Leave Him Behind 🐾💚
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Last weekend, we saved five shelter dogs. Three of the dogs were siblings — Clover, Guinness, and Molly. But there was one more with them… sweet Nemo. It’s unclear if they all came from the same home, but they were picked up together at the same location. When Nemo first arrived at the shelter, he appeared healthy and was even placed in adoptions. That gave us time to line up a foster and plan for his next chapter. Then everything changed. On the fourth day at the shelter, Nemo suddenly developed bloody diarrhea with clots. His condition worsened quickly, and he was placed on the euthanasia list. We couldn’t let his story end there — not when he had just started to hope. We stepped in and had him picked up the very next day. Nemo has been hospitalized. He’s been on IV fluids and medications all week, but he’s still not improving. He’ll remain hospitalized while his veterinary team runs x-rays and a full GI panel to try to find answers and determine the best course of treatment. What started as a plan to save just one dog quickly changed. We intended to take Clover, but we don’t leave family — or pack members — behind. So one save became four, because they mattered… together. And Nemo deserves the same chance as the rest. Right now, Nemo is still fighting. He’s receiving around-the-clock care, and the costs are continuing to grow as we search for answers. If you can spare just $10, it truly makes a difference. Your support helps cover: • Hospitalization and IV fluids • Medications and supportive care • X-rays and diagnostic imaging • Full GI panel testing • Ongoing treatment while we fight for answers Every single dollar helps us keep going for Nemo. Every share helps him reach someone who can help. He didn’t deserve to land on a euthanasia list for getting sick — and we’re committed to doing everything we can to give him the chance he deserves. Please consider donating and sharing Nemo’s story. Together, we can help this sweet boy heal and make it safely to the life waiting for him. 4/21/26 Update Not long ago, Nemo was fighting for his life in a hospital kennel—weak, sick, and not responding to treatment for severe, bloody diarrhea. Before that, he had been picked up by animal control and brought to BARC Animal Shelter, where he landed on the euthanasia list simply for getting sick. After spending a week at the vet clinic receiving intensive care, Nemo made the move into a foster home—and everything changed. In a home environment, Nemo is a completely different dog. He’s happy. He’s relaxed. He’s finally getting to just be a puppy. Sometimes healing doesn’t come from another medication or test—sometimes it comes from feeling safe. Nemo has blossomed into an absolute lover boy. He’s a total velcro pup who wants to be by your side at all times. On the ride home from the vet, he spent the entire trip holding paws with his foster mom—just soaking up comfort and connection. He’s dog-friendly, affectionate, and already doing incredibly well with potty training. There are still a few steps ahead—Nemo will need to be neutered—but his future is finally starting to look bright. Nemo’s hospitalization, diagnostics, and ongoing care have added up quickly, and we’re still covering the costs of everything it took to save his life. On top of that, he still needs his neuter and continued support as he transitions fully into health and toward his forever home. We said yes to Nemo when his time was running out. Now we’re asking for your help to make sure that yes lasts a lifetime. 5/7/26 Update Nemo update — and this one is the kind we’ve been hoping for. After everything this sweet boy has been through, we are so happy to share that Nemo is doing GREAT! When we first pulled Nemo from the euthanasia list, he was incredibly sick with severe bloody diarrhea and not responding to treatment. He spent days hospitalized receiving IV fluids, medications, diagnostics, and around-the-clock care while we searched for answers. It was touch and go for a while, but Nemo never stopped fighting. Today, his diarrhea issues have fully resolved! We now believe the bleeding may have been caused by a small anal tear that simply needed time and supportive care to heal. Nemo has also officially been neutered and is recovering beautifully. But the best part? We believe Nemo has a family lined up and will be traveling to them very soon! Because his future family has young children, Nemo has been spending the last week working on some training to help with puppy manners like jumping and pawing. He’s a happy, loving boy who just gets excited to be around people — and he’s doing so well. Watching Nemo go from a terrified, sick dog on a euthanasia list to a playful pup preparing for a forever home is exactly why we fight so hard for these animals. We are endlessly grateful to everyone who donated, shared, cheered him on, and helped make his recovery possible. Your support gave Nemo the second chance he deserved — and now his next chapter is finally beginning. 5/22/26 Update When Nemo first landed at the shelter, nobody could have predicted how quickly his life would spiral into crisis. What began as hope for a safe rescue turned into an emergency when he suddenly became gravely ill with severe bloody diarrhea and was placed on the euthanasia list simply for getting sick. But thanks to your support, Nemo’s story did not end there. Because compassionate people stepped up to help, we were able to rush Nemo to safety and provide the hospitalization, diagnostics, medications, IV fluids, and around-the-clock care he desperately needed. There were moments when answers felt uncertain, but Nemo never stopped fighting — and neither did all of you. And now, we are beyond thrilled to share the outcome everyone was hoping for: Nemo is thriving. His medical issues have resolved, he has officially been neutered, and the terrified, sick puppy we once pulled from the euthanasia list has transformed into a happy, affectionate, playful boy full of life and love. Once he settled into foster care, Nemo truly blossomed. Safe, comfortable, and finally able to relax, his sweet personality came shining through. He became the ultimate velcro pup — loving everyone around him and soaking up every bit of affection he could get. Even more exciting, Nemo’s future is brighter than ever. After spending time working on puppy manners and preparing for family life, Nemo is now headed toward the loving forever home he always deserved. Watching him go from critically ill and out of time to healthy, loved, and preparing for his next chapter is exactly why rescue matters. Your donations made every step of this possible. Because of you, Nemo got the chance that so many shelter dogs never receive — the chance to heal, to be loved, and to have a future. Thank you for believing in Nemo. Thank you for helping us say yes when his life was on the line. And thank you for proving that one sick puppy on a euthanasia list was worth fighting for. This is the ending we all hoped for — and Nemo is finally living it.

Patrick
Meet Patrick — A Happy Boy Facing Two Cancers with Courage
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Patrick is a recent shelter save who’s already proven he’s a fighter. Estimated to be 7–9 years old, this sweet senior came to us with more than anyone hoped — he’s battling both mast cell cancer and lymphoma. Despite everything, Patrick remains a happy boy with zero complaints, soaking up love and wagging his way through each day. Since arriving, Patrick has undergone extensive diagnostics to understand what we’re up against. He’s already had bloodwork, an ultrasound, and x-rays. Most recently, he saw an oncology specialist for additional testing to help determine which cancer needs to be prioritized. To get answers, his veterinary team performed cytology samples from his enlarged lymph nodes, spleen, and liver. We received some encouraging news — his liver and spleen showed no evidence of mast cells, which is a positive step forward. However, low-grade lymphoma in those organs can’t be fully ruled out yet. We’re now waiting on the lymph node results, which will help determine the best next steps for chemotherapy and treatment. These results are critical in building the most effective plan to give Patrick the time and quality of life he deserves. Through it all, Patrick remains gentle, loving, and full of joy. He doesn’t know he’s sick — he just knows he’s safe, cared for, and finally surrounded by kindness. That’s why we’re doing everything we can to fight for him. Your support will help cover: • Oncology consultations • Cytology and lab testing • Imaging diagnostics • Chemotherapy planning and treatment • Ongoing supportive care Patrick has already overcome so much, and now he needs us to help him keep going. Every donation — big or small — brings us closer to giving this sweet boy the best possible outcome and more time to enjoy the love he waited so long to find. Please consider donating and sharing Patrick’s story. Together, we can give this happy, deserving boy a fighting chance. 5/15/26 Update This sweet senior boy continues to amaze us with his resilience, his joyful spirit, and his endless capacity for love. Despite everything he is facing, Patrick remains happy, affectionate, and completely focused on enjoying every bit of kindness and comfort that comes his way. Even more encouraging — Patrick’s masses are responding to his medications and are shrinking! This is such positive news and gives us hope as we continue working closely with his oncology team to determine the best long-term treatment plan for him. He will be heading in for another oncology follow-up soon so we can continue monitoring his progress and next steps. And in true Patrick fashion, he has managed to gather an entire fan club around him. Right now, he’s splitting his time between two loving foster homes, meaning he is absolutely surrounded by people who adore him. Whether he’s soaking up cuddles, relaxing comfortably, or wagging happily through his day, Patrick is finally getting the love every dog deserves. While we know Patrick still has a long road ahead medically, seeing him so comfortable, loved, and thriving emotionally means everything. Your support has already helped provide critical diagnostics, specialist care, medications, and ongoing treatment for Patrick’s cancer journey. But his care is continuing, and oncology visits, monitoring, medications, and future treatments remain expensive. Please consider making a donation to help us continue fighting for Patrick. Every contribution helps us give this sweet boy more comfort, more care, and more precious time surrounded by love. 5/22/26 Update Because of your incredible support, Patrick has been able to receive the diagnostics, oncology care, medications, and follow-up treatment he desperately needed — and we cannot thank you enough for standing beside him through this journey. When Patrick first came to us from the shelter, we knew he was facing an uphill battle. Diagnosed with both mast cell cancer and lymphoma, this sweet senior boy deserved every chance possible to fight for more time, more comfort, and more love. Thanks to your donations, we were able to provide extensive testing, specialist consultations, imaging, medications, and ongoing oncology care to help give Patrick the best quality of life possible. And through it all, Patrick never stopped being Patrick. Despite everything his body was facing, he continued to greet each day with a wagging tail, a gentle spirit, and endless affection for everyone around him. He built an entire fan club of people who fell in love with his resilience and his joyful heart. Watching him finally experience safety, comfort, soft beds, cuddles, and unconditional love has meant more than words can express. We were so encouraged to see his masses responding to medication and shrinking, giving us precious hope and more quality time with this incredible boy. Every step of the way, your support made that possible. No matter what the future holds for Patrick, one thing is certain: he is no longer a forgotten shelter dog facing cancer alone. He is deeply loved, carefully cared for, and surrounded by people committed to making every day he has as happy and comfortable as possible. From all of us — and especially from Patrick — thank you for believing that senior dogs like him are worth fighting for. Your kindness gave him not only medical care, but dignity, comfort, and the chance to truly feel loved. Thank you for being part of Patrick’s story.

Waffles
Waffles Was Found Paralyzed in the Grass — Now She’s Fighting for Her Life
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
When Waffles was found, she was lying in the grass unable to move. She screamed in pain when someone tried to touch her. No one knows how long she had been there — vulnerable, suffering, and alone. Her fur was so severely matted that rescuers couldn’t even tell if she was a boy or a girl at first. Once she was brought to safety, they learned she was a young female dog, only about two years old. Her rescuers named her Waffles — a name that represents warmth, happiness, and the kind of peaceful life she has likely never known. And it’s exactly the life she deserves. Waffles was rushed to the emergency vet hospital, where she has remained hospitalized all week receiving intensive care. When she arrived, her condition was so critical that she required an emergency blood transfusion just to stabilize her. Veterinarians quickly discovered that Waffles is battling multiple serious medical issues: \- Severe anemia - Low protein and low albumin levels - Hookworms and roundworms - Heartworm disease - Ascites (fluid buildup in her abdomen) X-rays thankfully showed no broken bones or obstructions, but her body is still fighting hard to recover. Because her protein levels are so low, fluid continues to accumulate in her abdomen, causing painful swelling. Veterinarians have had to drain the fluid from her belly while treating her with medications and supportive care. Doctors suspect there may also be an underlying intestinal condition causing protein loss, but more advanced diagnostics like biopsies are too risky right now due to how fragile she is. For the moment, the veterinary team is focused on stabilizing her and supporting her body while she fights to survive. Right now, Waffles is stable — but she is not out of the woods. Her care is intensive and constant. Hospitalization, transfusions, medications, testing, and ongoing monitoring are all necessary to give her a chance at recovery. Through it all, Waffles continues to fight. ThisIsHouston is committed to giving this sweet girl every possible chance to make it through this and finally experience the love and comfort she has been missing for so long. But lifesaving care like this comes at a cost. Your donation will help cover: • Emergency hospitalization and monitoring • Blood transfusion and critical care • Diagnostic testing and imaging • Treatment for parasites and heartworms • Medications and supportive therapy • Ongoing care as doctors work to stabilize her condition Waffles is only two years old. She should be playing, running, and enjoying life — not fighting for survival in a hospital. But she’s fighting. And we’re fighting right alongside her. If you can, please consider donating to help give Waffles the care she desperately needs. Every contribution brings her one step closer to healing — and to the happy life her name promises.

Harley
Emergency Rescue: Help Cover Harley’s Critical Care
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
At just 4–5 months old, Harley should have been chasing toys and learning about the world. Instead, she was battling a painful abscess on the side of her neck and struggling to survive on her own. Kind park feeders brought her to the shelter, where she began treatment. But when her abscess ruptured and her medical needs became more extensive, she was placed on the euthanasia list. That’s when This is Houston stepped in. Harley was immediately transferred to an emergency vet for urgent care. Her abscess was flushed, she was started on IV fluids and strong antibiotics, and bloodwork revealed she was anemic. Thankfully, she did not require a transfusion, but she needed close monitoring and overnight hospitalization before heading to foster care. And then something beautiful happened. One of of foster's kids had requested a “large brown puppy,” and we were more than happy to make that wish come true. Harley walked straight into a safe home, a warm bed, and a person ready to love her through recovery. Her first night home? She slept through the night and kept her kennel spotless. Such a good girl. She still has some swelling as demodex mites die off, a bit of eye discharge, and a drainage hole from the abscess — possibly from a puncture wound or bite. The good news is the drainage is clear, which is exactly what we want to see. She returns to the vet tomorrow to recheck her anemia levels and ensure she’s continuing to improve. Harley is safe. But she is not out of the woods yet. Emergency hospitalization, diagnostics, medications, follow-up care — it all adds up quickly. We stepped in to save her life, and now we need your help to carry her through the rest of her healing journey. If you can donate, even a small amount, it makes a direct impact on Harley’s recovery. If you can’t donate, please share her story. Every dollar helps cover her veterinary bills and ensures we can continue saying “yes” to puppies like her when they need us most. Harley was hours away from losing her chance. Today, she’s resting safely in foster care because people like you care. Let’s finish what we started and give this sweet girl the healthy, happy future she deserves. 5/27/26 Update We are so excited to share the happiest update on sweet Harley — this brave little girl has officially gotten her happy ending! When Harley first came to us, she was just a tiny puppy fighting for her life. At only 4–5 months old, she was suffering from a painful ruptured abscess, anemia, demodex mites, and the effects of trying to survive alone on the streets. She had even been placed on the euthanasia list before This is Houston stepped in to save her. Thanks to your support, Harley received the emergency medical care she desperately needed and was able to begin healing safely in foster care. And now, the best news of all: Harley transported to one of our amazing rescue partners and has already been adopted into a loving home of her very own! The scared, sick puppy who was once hours away from losing her chance at life is now safe, cherished, and finally getting to experience what every dog deserves — love, comfort, security, and a family. None of this would have been possible without the incredible compassion of everyone who donated, shared her story, and cheered her on throughout her recovery journey. Your support not only saved Harley’s life, but also helped ensure we can continue saying “yes” to animals in critical need when they have nowhere else to turn. From all of us — and especially from Harley — thank you for mak ing this beautiful outcome possible. Stories like Harley’s remind us why rescue matters so much. She has a bright future ahead, and we could not be more grateful that you were part of her journey.

Mina
Every Rib Tells a Story — Help Mina Rewrite Hers
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
This Is Houston was contacted by a local shelter about a tiny stray dog whose body told a devastating story. When our team arrived at the shelter, we found a little girl who should have been solid, wiggly, and full of life. Instead, she was barely able to lift her head. We named her Mina. Mina is only about 3 years old and weighs just 17 pounds. Every single bone is visible. She is so weak she struggles to stand on her own. This didn’t happen overnight — her body shows the signs of prolonged suffering. And yet, despite everything, she is gentle. She leans in. She is still trying. Two of our team members rushed her straight to the emergency room, where she remained hospitalized through the weekend. Her bloodwork paints a heartbreaking picture of how long she’s been fighting: • Severe anemia • Pancreatitis • Critically low protein levels • Low calcium • Electrolyte imbalances • Refusing food because she felt so sick • So emaciated that even x-rays were difficult to interpret due to lack of body fat She received IV fluids and around-the-clock care. An ultrasound thankfully ruled out major GI obstruction concerns, which was one small piece of good news in a sea of worry. Mina is now in a foster home, resting and beginning the slow process of refeeding and stabilization. She has follow-up appointments scheduled to monitor her bloodwork closely. She needs prescription food, medications, continued diagnostics, and ongoing veterinary care to safely rebuild her body. The road ahead is not short. Rebuilding a body that has been starved for this long must be done carefully to avoid refeeding complications. Every lab recheck, every special diet bag, every medication adds up quickly. But Mina deserves the chance to feel strong. She deserves to feel full. She deserves to know comfort and safety. If you can donate toward her medical care, it will go directly to giving this sweet girl a future. If you can’t donate, sharing her story or sending good thoughts truly matters more than you know. Right now, Mina is still fighting. Let’s fight for her. 2/27/26 Update When we first met Mina, every bone in her tiny body told the story of prolonged suffering. At just 17 pounds, she was too weak to stand, too sick to eat, and far too fragile for a 3-year-old dog who should have been full of life. Today, we are holding onto something beautiful: progress. Mina is slowly and carefully gaining weight. Her refeeding plan has been gradual and closely monitored to protect her from complications, and her body is responding. Her ribs are no longer jutting out as sharply as they once did. There is the faintest layer of softness beginning to return — something she hasn’t had in a very long time. She is also gaining strength. She moves a little more each day. She has more stamina. And perhaps the most healing sight of all: Mina sleeping deeply and peacefully in her fluffy bed in her foster home. For the first time, she looks at ease. Safe. Comfortable enough to truly rest. Her recovery is still ongoing. She continues to need prescription food, medications, and routine bloodwork to monitor her anemia, protein levels, and pancreatitis. Rebuilding a body after prolonged starvation is not quick or simple — it requires patience, precision, and consistent veterinary oversight. But Mina is fighting. And now, she’s not fighting alone. If you’re able, please consider donating to support her continued care. Every lab recheck, every bag of specialized food, and every follow-up visit helps ensure that her progress continues safely. She deserved to be solid and wiggly and full of life from the start. With your help, we’re finally getting her there. Please donate or share Mina’s story. The softness returning to her body is proof that compassion works. 3/13/26 Update We’re so happy to share some great news about Mina! Thanks to the support and care she has received, Mina has been doing wonderfully. She still has a few pounds left to gain, but she has made incredible progress in her recovery. The most exciting update? Mina is now fully mobile! She’s walking around confidently and exploring her surroundings more every day. One of her newest challenges is learning how to master the stairs, and she’s working hard to figure them out like a pro. Even more exciting, Mina’s journey toward her forever home has already begun. Our adoptions team has been reviewing applications, and she recently went to a local family for a meet & greet. It’s such a special moment to see her getting closer to the loving home she deserves. Your support helped give Mina the chance to heal, regain her strength, and start this next chapter. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated and shared her story so far. We’re still raising funds to help cover Mina’s veterinary care and continued recovery, and every donation truly makes a difference. If you’re able, please consider contributing to help ensure Mina receives everything she needs as she continues gaining strength and preparing for her forever home. Thank you for standing with Mina and helping give her the happy future she deserves. 4/9/26 Update When Mina first came to us, she was barely able to lift her head. Her tiny body showed the heartbreaking effects of prolonged starvation, and we didn’t know how long her road to recovery would be. But thanks to compassionate supporters like you, Mina’s story has become one of resilience, healing, and hope. Today, we are thrilled to share that Mina is doing great. She has continued to gain strength, her weight is improving, and her gentle personality shines brighter every single day. The little girl who once struggled to stand is now comfortable, mobile, and enjoying the safety and love of her foster home. Even more exciting — Mina should be starting an adoption trial soon. This is the moment we have all been hoping for: the chance for her to step into a forever home and begin the life she always deserved. Before that, she has one more milestone ahead. Mina is scheduled to be spayed next week, an important step in ensuring her long-term health and preparing her for adoption. Once she’s recovered, she’ll be ready to move forward into her new chapter. It’s hard to believe this is the same fragile dog who arrived so weak and emaciated. Because of you, Mina now knows full meals, soft beds, gentle hands, and the promise of belonging. You helped transform her story from survival to stability — and now, to a future filled with love. Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, and cheered Mina on. Your compassion gave her the chance she desperately needed. We can’t wait to share more as she begins her adoption trial and, hopefully, finds her forever home very soon.

Brody
Left Behind in a Kennel—Brody Needs Emergency Care
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Brody was found abandoned on the side of the road, left behind in a kennel like he was disposable. Unable to stand or walk, he had no way to seek help. No voice. No escape. Just waiting. This is Houston stepped in immediately, and Brody was rushed to the emergency veterinarian, where he is currently undergoing extensive diagnostics to determine what’s happening medically and how best to help him heal. Despite being microchipped, the listed owners have refused to help—ignoring calls and texts and even hanging up on ER staff. But that doesn’t change what matters most right now: Brody needs care, comfort, and a chance. And he has that with us. With his microchip, we learned Brody is 6 years old. His body condition is poor—he’s extremely thin and will need a careful refeeding plan. He is still unable to stand or walk on his own. X-rays show no obvious fractures, but he does have severe hip dysplasia and is in significant pain. The veterinary team has started him on a continuous pain medication protocol to keep him as comfortable as possible. CT scans have been sent out for radiologist review, and while one area appears concerning, we are waiting for official results before jumping to conclusions. His bloodwork is stable, but he is heartworm positive and also battling giardia, hookworms, and a severe urinary tract infection, with sandy debris present in his urine. Additional testing, including a urinalysis and culture, is pending. What we DO know is this: Brody is eating well. He’s taking his medications. He’s warm, comfortable, and surrounded by patient, loving veterinary staff, who are gently earning his trust after everything he’s been through. Given the trauma he’s endured, his hesitation is completely understandable—but he is safe now. Can you imagine being dumped in the middle of nowhere, confined to a kennel, unable to walk, and completely helpless? Brody didn’t deserve that. But from this moment forward, he will only know care, kindness, and compassion. You can help Brody heal. Every tax-deductible donation goes directly toward his emergency care, diagnostics, medications, and whatever he needs next on his road to recovery. Every single dollar truly makes a difference. He may have been left behind—but he is not alone anymore. We’ve got you now, Brody. 2/21/26 Update Brody’s MRI finally gave us some answers — and like so much of his journey, they’re complicated. The imaging shows parasites or parasite-related lesions in his C2 vertebra (the second cervical vertebra in his neck, on the right side). The good news: this does \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\_not\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\_ appear to be cancer or a tumor, which means surgery is not being recommended. Because Brody tested positive for heartworms, our veterinary team suspects that migrating parasites could be the cause. Heartworms, roundworms, and other parasites can sometimes travel through the body and lodge in unusual places. We’ve been advised to test for toxoplasmosis and neosporosis to better identify what we’re dealing with — knowing the exact parasite will help determine the most effective treatment plan. If we can successfully treat the infection, there is a possibility that some of his mobility could return. However, the MRI also revealed decreased cerebellar cortical volume — meaning there has been loss of brain tissue. Unfortunately, brain loss is permanent and will not regenerate. The changes seen do not match congenital cerebellar hypoplasia (which would present as a lifelong “wobbly” gait), and instead suggest a past infectious process. On top of that, Brody has bilateral degenerative changes in both shoulders — arthritis likely caused by years of compensating for his severely malformed hips that are not properly seated in their sockets. His body has been working overtime for a long time 💔 Treating for toxoplasmosis, neosporosis, or even possible fungal causes does not guarantee improvement in mobility. That said, we \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\_have\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\_ seen slight improvement in his rear function since he’s been with us at NVC — and we’re holding onto that hope. There are still so many unknowns: • How much strength can he regain? • Will he ever be able to fully support his own weight? • How much is the brain change contributing to his mobility challenges? Only time — and treatment — will tell. What we do know is that cognitively, Brody seems bright and engaged. His attitude has improved tremendously, and for the first time in his life, he’s experiencing consistent love and care. That alone makes every step worth it. The radiologist reviewing his scans has over 20 years of experience and told us Brody falls in the top 5–10% of most unusual cases he’s seen. Leave it to us to welcome another medical mystery — but giving dogs like Brody a chance is exactly why we exist. 2/27/26 Update Brody’s medical care has now surpassed $10,000 — and we are still searching for answers to his paralysis. He was dumped in a kennel on the side of the road like he was disposable. But to us, Brody is not a number on a bill. He is not a “case.” He is a life. And he is worth showing up for. Since his MRI revealed parasite-related lesions in his C2 vertebra, degenerative joint disease, and permanent cerebellar changes, we’ve known this would not be a simple recovery. We are continuing targeted testing and treatment for possible toxoplasmosis, neosporosis, and other infectious causes, while also managing his heartworm disease, arthritis, and chronic pain. And now, Brody has started hydrotherapy. Watching him in the water is both heartbreaking and inspiring. You can see how badly he wants to walk. His back legs try to move. His body strains with effort. The drive is there — the will is undeniable. In the buoyancy of the water, where gravity isn’t working against him, we’re seeing flickers of movement and determination that give us hope. Hydrotherapy will not reverse the brain tissue loss. It may not fully restore his mobility. But it gives him the best possible chance to strengthen what function remains, build muscle, and improve his quality of life. It gives him dignity. It gives him opportunity. People sometimes ask, “How much is too much?” Our answer remains the same: his life is not a number. Brody is here. Brody is trying. Brody is worth it. If you believe that abandoned dogs deserve every possible chance — even when the path is complicated and expensive — please consider donating to Brody’s continued care. Hydrotherapy, ongoing diagnostics, medications, and specialty support are significant costs, but they are giving him hope. He was left behind once. We will not leave him behind again. Please donate and share Brody’s story. 3/22/26 Update From the moment Brody was found abandoned on the side of the road — left in a kennel, unable to stand or walk — we promised him he would never be alone again. And thanks to all of you, he wasn’t. Over the past weeks, Brody received everything we could possibly give him. Extensive diagnostics. Specialist consultations. MRI imaging. Medications. Treatment for parasites. Pain management. Hydrotherapy. Careful refeeding. Endless comfort and love. His medical care surpassed $10,000 as we searched for answers and fought for any chance at improvement. Despite the complicated findings — parasite-related lesions in his cervical spine, permanent cerebellar changes, severe hip dysplasia, arthritis, and multiple infections — Brody continued to try. In hydrotherapy, he pushed his legs. He stayed bright and engaged. He ate well. He showed us every day that he hadn’t given up. We held onto that hope right alongside him. But over time, Brody’s body began to tell us a different story. Despite treatment, therapy, and dedicated medical care, his progress plateaued. The effort it took just to exist became exhausting. The conditions affecting his brain and spine were simply too much for his body to overcome. After much consultation with his veterinary team — and with Brody’s comfort and dignity as our only priority — we made the heartbreaking decision to let him rest. Brody became too tired to keep fighting, and we gently helped him pass peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved him. While this is not the ending we had hoped for, we take comfort in knowing that Brody did not leave this world abandoned, scared, or in pain. He left knowing warmth, kindness, soft blankets, gentle hands, and voices telling him he mattered. He left knowing he was loved. Because of your support, Brody received weeks of compassionate care, advanced diagnostics, pain control, and therapy that gave him every possible chance. You gave him dignity. You gave him comfort. You gave him a family when he had none. He may not have gotten the long future we dreamed of for him, but his final chapter was filled with love — and that is because of you. Run free, sweet Brody. You were never disposable. You were always worth it.

Rudy
🎄 Meet Rudy — Our Christmas Eve Miracle 🎄
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
While families were gathering and homes were filling with warmth on Christmas Eve, Rudy was alone. He wandered the streets scared and hurting, carrying an injury no dog should ever have to endure. At some point, Rudy’s back leg was traumatically amputated, and his little body did its best to survive on its own. The wound had begun to heal without medical care. His fur was painfully matted and soaked with urine — silent proof of how long he had been forgotten. Rudy didn’t cry out. He just kept going. When Rudy came into our care, he was rushed to the ER. Pain medication was started immediately, and his matted fur was gently shaved away so he could finally feel some relief. Because his injury is older, Rudy underwent surgery to have the rest of his damaged leg properly amputated — the final step before true healing can begin. Through it all, Rudy has remained unbelievably sweet. He leans into gentle hands. He trusts. He loves. This Christmas, instead of sleeping on the cold streets, Rudy is curled up safely in a warm foster home, finally knowing what comfort feels like. Rudy survived because someone stopped. Because someone cared. Because help arrived just in time. His journey isn’t over yet — and he needs us now more than ever. Every donation made today goes directly toward Rudy’s surgery, medical care, and recovery, and ensures that dogs like him won’t have to suffer alone. If you’re able, please consider making a year-end gift in Rudy’s honor. Your kindness gives him the chance to heal, to run again in his own way, and to know a life filled with love. 💛 Rudy’s second chance starts with you. 2/12/26 Update After coming into our care, Rudy underwent surgery to properly amputate the remainder of his damaged leg, along with being neutered. We’re happy to share that he has fully recovered from both procedures and is feeling fantastic. He is officially out of quarantine and in general population in his foster home, where he’s settling in beautifully with the other dogs. And let us tell you — this boy is thriving. Rudy is a one-year-old, 20-pound bundle of love. He is snuggly, playful, and absolutely full of personality. He leans into affection, seeks out cuddles, and plays with the confidence of a dog who has decided the world might actually be a good place after all. Next up for Rudy is heartworm treatment, which he’ll be starting soon. We’re committed to seeing him through every step so he can be as healthy as possible for his future. And speaking of his future… Rudy already has an adoption application submitted and should be heading into an adoption trial very soon. From a lonely Christmas Eve on the streets to a warm foster home filled with comfort, friends, and love — Rudy’s transformation has been incredible. He doesn’t let having three legs slow him down one bit. He runs, plays, and lives fully, just like he was always meant to. While Rudy is doing wonderfully, his medical care — including surgery, hospitalization, and upcoming heartworm treatment — has come at a significant cost. If you’re able, please consider making a donation to help cover Rudy’s remaining medical expenses and to ensure we can say “yes” to the next injured dog who needs us. Your support makes stories like Rudy’s possible. Because of you, he didn’t just survive — he healed. And now, he’s on the brink of finding his forever family.

Jingle and Joy
Cruelty Survivor Mom and Newborn Puppy Fighting for Their Lives
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Joy and her newborn puppy, Jingle, are hoping for a Christmas miracle—and they need your help to survive. These two are part of an active cruelty case. They were found after being left forgotten, out of sight and out of mind, in a carrier filled with urine and feces. Animal Care stepped in immediately, and when the shelter asked for rescue support, the team at This is Houston did not hesitate to say yes. Jingle is just 10–14 days old, and his tiny body has already endured more than any dog ever should. He spent the first days of his life lying beside his exhausted mother and his deceased siblings. One by one, his littermates passed away. Jingle was the only survivor—and he was critical. He had severe urine scalding, low blood sugar, ongoing seizure activity, and neurological symptoms. At one point, he was described as “flailing like a fish,” not acting like a normal puppy at all. Veterinarians suspect his seizures may have caused swelling in his brain, and treatment is focused on reducing that swelling and stabilizing him. He has had only one seizure since admission at the emergency vet, which is encouraging, but his fight is far from over. A neurology consult may still be needed. For now, he remains hospitalized, receiving round-the-clock, life-saving care. Mamma Joy’s story is just as heartbreaking. She weighs only 25 pounds and was in such poor condition that she could not produce milk for her only surviving puppy. Her body shows the signs of long-term neglect, including painful urine scalding—but despite everything, she is reported to be sweet, gentle, and loving. Joy underwent an emergency spay due to having a severe infection, known as pyometra, and is recovering well. She is currently receiving IV fluids, eating eagerly, enjoying her walks, and taking her medications without issue. Her surgical incision looks excellent, and she is stable. The medical care for Joy and Jingle is extensive—and costly. Emergency hospitalization, medications, diagnostics, IV fluids, and potential specialty care add up quickly. Every single dollar makes a difference for this tiny puppy fighting seizures and the mom who never stopped loving him. Joy and Jingle didn’t get the care they deserved when they needed it most—but together, we can change how their story ends.

Ralph
Meet Ralph — A Brave Survivor Learning to Stand Again After Unimaginable Trauma
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
When This Is Houston found Ralph wandering the streets, he was in critical condition. This sweet dog had been suffering alone with a horrific injury to his hind leg — an injury consistent with being hit by a car. The tissue damage was so severe, and so old, that there was no way to save the limb. Ralph had been trying to survive on three legs long before help arrived. Ralph was rushed straight to the emergency vet. The moment he arrived, it was clear he needed immediate surgery to end his pain. His damaged leg was amputated, and although the surgery saved his life, the road that followed was far from easy. After surgery, Ralph faced complications. He developed fluid buildup, refused to eat, and struggled with the pain and trauma of everything he had endured. He had to remain hospitalized for several days so the veterinary team could monitor and treat the fluid accumulation, provide IV fluids, manage his pain and nausea, run bloodwork, take X-rays, and ensure he was stable enough to stand, heal, and finally begin his new start at life. Despite everything he’s been through, Ralph is gentle, resilient, and determined. But the emergency surgery, hospitalization, diagnostics, and round-the-clock care come with a very large medical bill — one the rescue cannot shoulder alone. Please donate to Ralph’s care. Your support gives him the second chance he fought so hard to survive for.

Cheddar
Meet Cheddar — The Gentle, Toy-Loving Doberman Who Just Needs Time, Safety, and a Little Help
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Cheddar’s life before rescue is a mystery — but what we do know is that this 8-month-old Doberman has already spent far too much of his short life feeling scared, alone, and unseen. He was picked up as a stray and sat at a local shelter for over a month. That’s a long time for any dog, but for a frightened young pup, it’s an eternity. Thankfully, This Is Houston stepped in and pulled him to safety Even though people are scary to him right now, Cheddar lights up around other dogs. He’s silly and endlessly playful — especially with toys. He’ll gather toys around him and then try to convince the other dogs to play with him. And once he discovered what a backyard was, that was a total game changer. Now he zooms, explores, and enjoys his freedom in ways he never could at the shelter. His quirky underbite only adds to his charm — it’s pure Cheddar personality. Cheddar was recently neutered and thankfully tested heartworm negative. During playtime, he suffered a small puncture wound above his eye that required two vet visits. Combined with his neuter surgery, vaccines, parasite testing, medications, and ongoing care, his medical expenses have grown quickly. Cheddar is a puppy who has never truly known safety — but he’s trying so hard to trust the world. With your help, he can continue his medical care, work with behavior support as needed, and stay in a stable, loving foster home until he’s ready for his forever family. Your donation, no matter the size, gives Cheddar the chance to become the happy, confident dog he was always meant to be.

Nick
Nick’s Back in the Hospital and Needs Us More Than Ever
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Nick’s story began last December, when he fell out of a moving truck and suffered a devastating back injury that changed his life forever. The shelter that took him in reached out to multiple rescues, but each one said no. We were their last call — and we said yes. Nick lost the ability to walk, but with surgery, months of physical therapy, and a whole lot of determination, he made an incredible comeback. Despite everything, Nick’s spirit never wavered. He learned to walk again and, this past July, was adopted by a wonderful dad who has loved and cared for him deeply. Now, Nick is facing another heartbreaking battle. He’s currently in the hospital fighting for his life with a serious urinary issue that’s affecting his kidneys and has led to a seizure. His urine is dark and bloody, and the medical team has struggled to place a urinary catheter — a dangerous complication on its own. Their immediate goal is to keep his bladder drained and his kidneys flushed while they search for the cause. As of this morning (10/27), doctors still couldn’t place a standard catheter, but they were able to get some urine out and relieve some pressure. Overnight, Nick remained in the ICU, and a pigtail catheter was placed to help empty his bladder — it’s risky and carries a chance of sepsis, but it’s giving him a fighting chance. His dad has been by his side through it all, waiting for every update from the surgical team. The two share a deep bond — one built on months of recovery, resilience, and love. When Nick’s dad rushed him to the ER last night, the situation was critical. The vet team discussed euthanasia, and the treatment estimate — $8,000 to $11,000 — was overwhelming. But he couldn’t give up on Nick. And neither could we. This Is Houston has already placed an $8,662 deposit to ensure Nick gets the urgent care he needs. We made a promise when we rescued him — to be there for him, no matter what — and we’re keeping that promise today. Nick has defied the odds once before. Let’s help him do it again. Your donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward his ICU care, diagnostics, and ongoing treatment. Nick, his devoted dad, and all of us at This Is Houston are so deeply grateful for your support. We fought for Nick once. We’re fighting for him again. Please help us give him another chance.

Carli has started to catch the eye of potential adopters, but nothing is official yet — so we’re still searching for her perfect forever family.

Baby Shylah
Barely 3 Weeks Old and Already Fighting to Survive — Help Baby Shylah
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Baby Shylah is only 2–3 weeks old, but she is already fighting the hardest battle of her life. When we got the call about her, we knew it was urgent—but we didn’t know just how fragile she was until we saw her. She had a deep, infected wound on her hip and leg, crawling with maggots, and she was barely hanging on. On the way to the ER, her breathing was so shallow that our team feared she wouldn’t survive the drive. But this little girl showed us her spirit—she made it. We named her Shylah, an Irish word that means strong, because that’s exactly what she is. Shylah’s challenges are overwhelming for such a tiny pup. Her temperature, blood pressure, and blood sugar have all been dangerously unstable. She’s on IV fluids, dextrose, heat support, and blood pressure supplementation. The wound on her hip and thigh is severe—it will need ongoing cleaning and debridement. X-rays thankfully showed no fractures, but the soft tissue damage is extensive. For now, Shylah is hospitalized at the vet, where she is receiving round-the-clock intensive care. She isn’t out of the woods, but she is surrounded by a medical team fighting for her just as hard as we are. We don’t know what the future holds, but what we do know is this: we won’t give up on her. As long as Shylah keeps fighting, so will we. Update 10/8/25 Our little warrior has been discharged from the ER — and she’s already showing just how strong she truly is! Her leg wound, which once seemed impossible to save, is healing beautifully. The vet decided to keep it open and unwrapped since it’s in such an awkward spot high on her thigh — any bandage would slip down and make it hard for her to walk. Instead, Shylah is getting gentle water therapy several times a day, especially after she goes potty, to help keep the wound clean and encourage healing. A few tiny sutures are helping keep her skin in place so it can heal correctly, and she’s getting daily antibiotic ointment and Aquaphor to protect the area. The hope is that her body will fill in the wound naturally (granulate) over time rather than needing it surgically closed — but that process takes time, patience, and continued care. This brave little baby still has a long road ahead, but she’s proving every single day that she wants to be here. Your donations made it possible for Shylah to survive the ER and get this far — and now she needs your help to continue her healing journey. Please keep sharing her story and supporting her care. Together, we can make sure this tiny fighter grows up strong, healthy, and loved. Update 11/5/25 Our miracle girl, Baby Shylah, is thriving! It’s hard to believe that just weeks ago, this tiny pup was clinging to life with a devastating wound and an uncertain future. Thanks to the incredible support of our community—and Shylah’s own unstoppable will to live—she’s now healthy, playful, and growing big and strong! We’re thrilled to share that Shylah has a local adopter lined up and will soon begin her adoption trial! From a dying newborn to a beloved family member, Shylah’s journey is nothing short of miraculous. Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, and believed in her. You gave this little fighter the chance to live—and now, to love and be loved in return.

Sienna
Sienna Survived the Attack—But Pregnant, Alone, and Facing $10K in Care, She Needs You
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
“Hello! For over a year, I've been feeding some stray dogs daily. Yesterday, three of them got into a fight and left the oldest one badly injured. She looks really bad. She can barely walk.” This was the heartbreaking message This is Houston received—just one of many we get every single day. But when we saw the condition of this poor girl, the rescue knew we had to step in. We named her Sienna. She is only about 2 years old, and her short life has already been filled with hardship. She was pregnant when she was attacked and sustained a deep puncture wound in her abdomen that left her bleeding heavily. X-rays revealed fluid and oxygen in her abdomen, a life-threatening situation. Sienna was rushed into emergency surgery overnight. Her abdominal wound was closed, and while she was under anesthesia, she was spayed—her pregnancy had to be terminated to save her life. She also has multiple pelvic fractures that will require further diagnostics, and she still faces a long road ahead: a CT scan, cherry-eye surgery, heartworm and ehrlichiosis treatment, and potentially hip surgery. Despite everything, Sienna is fighting to live. She is gentle, resilient, and wants nothing more than the chance she’s never had—to know safety, kindness, and love. ** Update 10/11/25 ** Sweet Sienna has come such a long way since her rescue last month. When she was first found, she had been brutally attacked by other dogs and was left with life-threatening injuries. Thanks to the incredible support of our community, Sienna was able to receive two critical surgeries that saved her life. Today, we’re thrilled to share that Sienna is thriving in her loving foster home! She’s continuing her recovery with heartworm treatment and soaking up all the love, care, and cuddles she can get from her amazing foster parents. Sienna’s resilience is truly inspiring — she’s a gentle soul who has every reason to give up but instead chooses to love and trust again. Thank you to everyone who has supported her journey so far. Your generosity and compassion made this happy update possible! Please continue to share Sienna’s story and help us cover her ongoing heartworm treatment and recovery care so she can keep healing and eventually find her forever home. ** Update 11/5/25** Beautiful Sienna has made a full recovery! After surviving the unimaginable — a brutal dog attack, emergency surgery, and a long, difficult recovery — this brave girl is finally getting her happy ending. Sienna is completely healed and will soon be starting an adoption trial with a wonderful family! Her new mom owns an RV and travels all over the country, so Sienna will get to be a traveling pup, exploring new places and living the life of adventure and love she’s always deserved.

Poppy and Her Puppies
A Mother’s Love Couldn’t Be Broken — Now Help Poppy’s Family Get the Care They Deserve
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Poppy’s heartbreaking journey came to light when Tillie, one of her puppies, was found alone and tangled in netting. A kind neighbor called animal control, and thankfully, they came just in time. The next day, Poppy returned, still trying to care for her litter the best she could. That’s when the real rescue began—and what they found was heartbreaking. Six tiny puppies, hidden under the home —two injured, one with painful, crusty eyes, and all in desperate need of care. When the owner was finally tracked down, the response was chilling: “That’s my daughter’s dog. She keeps getting out and getting knocked up. This is her fourth litter. I don’t want her.” Poppy and her pups were abandoned, but today, they are safe with a loving foster mom. She visited the vet where she received treatment for hookworms, whipworms, and sadly, tested positive for heartworms—another silent sign of years of neglect. But despite it all, Poppy stole every heart in the room. Calm, gentle, and soaking up affection like she’d been waiting her whole life for it, the vet said she’ll have no trouble finding a home with a personality like hers. Poppy and her puppies are being monitored closely, receiving medical care, and most of all: learning what it means to be safe. Please donate to help this sweet family receive the care they need. **Update 8 15 25 ** The whole family is doing amazing! One time, Poppy came in to check on the kids in her foster home snuggling her puppies — she sniffed the puppies and kissed the kids in the face and went back to exploring the house. She loves her breaks from the puppies, and especially loves taking breaks in her backyard sunbathing by the water (supervised, of course)

Maybelle
More Diagnoses Than Pounds… And Still Maybelle Wags
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Maybelle spent several days alone, camping out in an open field. No food. No shelter. No one to ease her pain. A Good Samaritan spotted her and posted a plea for help—and that’s when ThisIsHouston stepped in. They welcomed Maybelle into their care, and what they discovered broke their hearts. She’s a senior Chihuahua mix and only 15 lbs. Despite everything, her tail still wags when someone offers her a gentle touch. But behind those sweet eyes is a story of survival no dog should have to tell. Maybelle’s medical challenges are overwhelming: -Her back leg has an old injury that’s far beyond repair. The only option is amputation. -Her “good” back leg is also compromised. There's old tendon damage, severe arthritis, and a dead femoral head—a painful condition with no easy fix. Specialists are being contacted, but her mobility remains uncertain. -She tested positive for heartworms and has signs of heart enlargement. -She has at least one dead, damaged tooth that requires extraction. -Early signs of pneumonia were found in her lungs, so she’s been started on antibiotics. -And most devastating of all—Maybelle was shot. A BB gun pellet was found lodged in her, alongside evidence of an old fracture. Nothing can be done about that now, except ensure she’s never harmed again. Through all of this, Maybelle has remained gentle, trusting, and grateful. Maybelle’s road to recovery will be long and costly. Please consider donating to Maybelle’s care. Every contribution brings her one step closer to a pain-free life filled with love.

Tillie
Tiny Tillie's Fight: One Week Old, One Big Battle for Life
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Just one week old, tiny Tillie should be curled up next to her mama, safe and warm. Instead, this fragile baby girl was found tangled in netting—her delicate body already bearing the trauma of deep, infected wounds. No one knows how long she was out there, but by the time she was found, she was in desperate need of help. Today, Tillie is in the ER, wrapped not in danger but in the smallest, gentlest bandages they make. She’s on IV fluids and medications, her wounds are being carefully cleaned and treated, and she’s getting around-the-clock care from a dedicated veterinary team. Her body is so little, but her will to live is so big. She doesn’t even know it yet, but she’s already showing us how strong she is. Because she’s so young, Tillie isn’t able to eat on her own yet. She’s being tube-fed by the incredible ER staff as she slowly learns to suckle. Every hour, every gentle feeding, every bandage change is a small miracle in her fight to survive. But ER care is expensive—especially when it involves intensive treatment for a newborn this fragile. She’s expected to stay for a few more days, and the costs are already adding up fast. Please donate and help give Tillie a real chance at the life she deserves. Update 5/13/25: After a rough start and a serious injury that kept her from nursing for over a week, Tillie is finally getting some much-needed one-on-one time with her momma, Poppy. 💕 While all the puppies in the litter are doing great, Tillie is now playing catch-up — and she’s doing it with attitude! Her foster mom describes her as loud and feisty (with a smile, of course), and that’s exactly what everyone wants to hear. Because not long ago, Tillie was silent, in pain, and alone. Now, her little voice is full of life. She's healing, she's growing, and she’s proving just how strong she is.

Malone
Help Malone Walk Without Pain — One Paw at a Time
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston

This beautiful boy was recently saved by ThisIsHouston from a local shelter, where his future was uncertain. But Malone is facing a tough challenge. He has a mysterious injury in his front leg. While initial x-rays didn’t reveal a break, it’s clear something’s not right. His wrist turns outward unnaturally, he’s in visible pain, and there’s noticeable swelling. ThisIsHouston is anxiously waiting for a radiologist to review his scans to get answers. Update 8/14/25 Malone is doing so much better! He is walking normally now and is no longer in pain.

Sam
Sam’s Battle: A Puppy in Critical Need of Your Help
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Meet Sam. He’s a 17-week-old puppy who has found himself in the fight of his life after being hit by a car. Right now, Sam is at an ER clinic, fighting for every breath. His injuries are severe: a fractured pelvis, pneumothorax (air leaking into the space between his lungs and chest), and pulmonary contusions. Despite the severity of his injuries, Sam is a fighter — he’s showing incredible resilience. But he needs urgent, intensive care to make it through. He’s currently on oxygen, and the doctors expect that he will need to stay on it for at least 24 hours. The total cost for Sam's immediate care is a staggering $4,279.84. This covers his hospitalization, oxygen therapy, pain management, and the critical care he needs to stabilize. Unfortunately, this clinic doesn’t offer discounts for rescue groups, so every penny of this bill must be covered by compassionate supporters like you. Please donate today and help us give this brave pup a fighting chance at life. With your generosity, we can give Sam the chance to heal and find a loving home where he will grow up to be the happy, healthy dog he was always meant to be. Update 4/2/25: Sam recently underwent surgery and has been focused on resting and recovering. The surgery involved a right SI luxation and a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO). While working on the SI joint, the surgeon discovered a fracture at the top of the ilium, which wasn’t visible on the X-rays. Unfortunately, there was no way to repair this injury. Sam also has severe hip dysplasia on his left side, which will require a second FHO once he’s fully healed from this surgery. On his left side, he’s been keeping his leg extended straight out, and there’s some swelling along his ankle and lower limb. The tendon in that area remains intact, so it’s unclear whether the leg positioning is due to the hip issue or the swelling. To prevent any further complications, Sam will need to do standing and range-of-motion exercises on his left hind leg to prevent it from contracting. While he was a little uncomfortable earlier today, he’s resting comfortably now after receiving a pain injection. It’s heartbreaking to see such a young pup, only 17 weeks old, going through all of this, but we’re so grateful that he’s on the road to recovery. We’re hopeful for his full recovery and continued progress. Update 4/5/25: Sam is doing well! He seems a bit more comfortable now and is urinating and defecating on his own. His techs are carefully flipping him throughout the day to prevent pressure sores. He’s also been receiving laser therapy, and his incision sites are looking great. The bruising around his rear end doesn’t appear to have worsened, which is a good sign, and the swelling in his left hind leg seems to be improving. The doctor wants him fully healed on the right side before we move forward with the left FHO. It may take about 4 weeks, since puppies heal quickly, but he’ll have recheck x-rays at that time, and we’ll go from there. This morning, Sam tried to stand on his own a couple of times! He wasn’t able to hold it for more than a second or two, but it’s encouraging to see progress. We still need to support his rear end during standing exercises to prevent him from leaning backward. We also tried using a towel sling to see if he’d walk, but he wasn’t very interested just yet. We’re hoping the rest of his recovery goes smoothly and uneventful! Update 4/8/25: Sam is learning how to walk again after being hit by a car. He still needs some help, but is making progress. He's such a sweet boy despite everything he has been through!

Griff
Griff’s Journey to Healing: A Life Saved, A Future Reclaimed
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Found as an injured stray, Griff’s journey has been anything but easy. His injuries and the overwhelming number of animals in shelters across Texas meant that his time was running out. But thanks to the incredible team at ThisIsHouston, Griff was pulled from the euthanasia list hours before his scheduled time, and he got a second chance at life. His injury, a wound that has now aged, has left him with a leg that can no longer be saved—it must be amputated. In addition to this, Griff has tested positive for heartworm, making his journey even more challenging. But despite the odds stacked against him, Griff's spirit is undeniable and he is incredibly sweet. The road to recovery will be long, but Griff will be able to start his new life, pain-free, with the love and care he deserves. We are asking for your support to cover the costs of Griff's life-saving treatments, including his leg amputation surgery and heartworm treatment. Griff's shown the true meaning of resilience, and we owe it to him to give him the best shot at a full life. With your help, Griff has a chance to experience the love and happiness he's always deserved. Update 4/2/25: Griff had an amputation and is recovering well but has some pretty intense bruising on his body in areas not near his incision site. He’s already been to the vet this week for bloodwork and some testing. His clotting times are also less than they should be, so the vet is slightly concerned. But clinically, he’s in good spirits. His foster mom is keeping a close eye on him and says he always has to be touching her. He’s super sweet, and we’re so glad he’s still alive today!

Dax
From Mangled to Mended: Help Dax Heal from His Vicious Attack
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Meet Dax, a young dog who has suffered a horrifying attack by a pack of dogs. Just yesterday, he was seen chasing after a female in heat, but today, he’s been found battered, broken, and in desperate need of medical care. Dax's story is heartbreaking—he was attacked so viciously that his body is covered in bite wounds, particularly on his back half. His legs are badly mangled, he has lost several teeth, and one of his canines is broken. Despite all of this, Dax is still fighting, but he needs us to step in and help him heal. Dax needs immediate care at the ER, and while ThisIsHouston's fosters and resources are stretched thin, they couldn't ignore this precious life. He has so much to give, and we believe with your support, he can recover and live a happy, pain-free life. Dax is more than just an injured dog—he’s a life worth saving. Thank you for considering helping Dax. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to getting him the treatment he needs and ensuring he can live a happy, healthy life. Update 3/26/25: When Dax arrived at the ER, he was in a state of shock. His blood pressure was low but stabilized with fluid boluses. X-rays didn't show any fractures, but he had swelling and severe edema and cellulitis underneath his skin. Some bite wounds are old and some are infected. He also had a small volume of air in his chest so the vet watched closely for respiratory issues. The vet plans to clip and clean his wounds under sedation and take a good look at his mouth while he’s sedated. He’s going to need some intense wound care as he’s at risk of sepsis in this state. He’ll need bandage changes 2x a day for the foreseeable future as the wounds declare themselves, so he’ll be at the ER for a couple of days. Update 3/27/25: Dax is holding on, though he's still facing some challenges. Yesterday, his clotting times were slightly elevated, and his blood sugar was dropping, which raised concerns about potential sepsis. To address this, he received a plasma transfusion and dextrose was added to his IV fluids. He also underwent a full body clip and clean, which revealed old scabs and scars across the front half of his body. The most recent injuries are on his back legs, with a notable spot over his scrotum as well. He's currently receiving bandage changes twice a day to help with healing. In addition, Dax will need dental x-rays soon. We know he has a fractured lower left canine and a missing lower right canine, with a hole in its place. While we’re not entirely sure how this happened, we suspect he may have lost or fractured his teeth while trying to defend himself. It’s heartbreaking to see him go through all of this, but he’s a fighter. Update 3/30/25: Dax has been at the ER receiving wound care, hydrotherapy, and daily bandage changes. He’s stable and doing well overall—he’s eating and drinking with no issues, and all of his vitals are normal. However, he does have some bone and tendon exposure, which is expected given the severity of his wounds. With time, we anticipate these areas will begin to granulate and heal. Update 4/2/25: Dax was discharged from the ER yesterday and is now in the care of a wonderful foster family. He’s settling in and decompressing well in his new environment, starting to show signs of comfort and trust. His healing process is going smoothly, and he is currently receiving bandage changes every 48 hours to ensure his recovery continues without complications. Dax still has a long road ahead, but with the care and attention he’s receiving, we’re confident he’s on the right track. Update 4/3/25: When Dax's foster mom picked him up from the ER to bring him home, she was expecting him to be very shut down when they handed her his leash. But to her surprise, as soon as they got home, he happily jumped out of the crate and onto a large dog bed 🙂. Since then, he’s been so sweet and just chillin’. His body is still tough to look at, with so many scars and scabs, but it's all uphill from here. He's already enjoying the good life, and we love seeing him thrive!

Violet
Help Violet Find Relief and Love in Her Journey to Recovery
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Today, a tiny pup named Violet was found by animal control, suffering from unimaginable pain. Weighing only 8 pounds, her little body is covered in scabs from both demodex and sarcoptic mange. As if this wasn't heartbreaking enough, she's also coated in a purple substance, likely a livestock spray someone applied in a misguided attempt to soothe her raw and hurting skin. Every inch of her small body shows signs of irritation, and she appears to be in constant pain—even with the slightest movement. Violet's journey to recovery is just beginning, but she urgently needs your help. She has been admitted to Blue Pearl ER for immediate hospitalization and medical care. The road ahead will be long, but with the right treatment and love, we know she can heal. Update 3/24/25: Violet, the sweet soul who has captured all of our hearts, was discharged from the ER yesterday and is now in the safe and loving care of her foster family. She’s continuing to receive the medical treatment she so desperately needed, and we’re already seeing signs of improvement. Update 3/28/25: Violet has made incredible progress and is now thriving in a loving foster home where she is truly experiencing the care and comfort she deserves. Violet is now a beloved girl who’s living her best life—she even has matching pajamas with her foster momma! They cuddle up together in bed, and it’s clear that Violet’s heart is healing as much as her body. The love and affection she’s receiving is helping her regain her confidence and joy! Violet continues to receive medicated baths and is almost purple free! She had a vet recheck and her bloodwork is steadily improving. While she still has a long journey ahead, it’s clear that Violet is getting stronger and healthier every day. Update 4/8/25: It’s hard to believe it’s already been nearly three weeks since little Violet came into ThisIsHouston's care. When she first arrived, she was a heartbreaking sight—her fur stained purple, her spirit low, and her tiny body clearly in distress. But today? She’s a whole new pup. Violet is receiving the medical treatment and tender loving care she so desperately needed. She’s no longer purple. No longer suffering. No longer unloved. And no longer unrecognizable. With the right meds, nourishing food, and a safe place to heal, Violet is finally getting to be the happy, spunky little dog she was always meant to be. Her skin still has some healing to go, but she has made tremendous progress! They've also learned more about her—turns out she’s not getting any bigger, so she may be a little Chihuahua mix! And the best news? She’s been catching the eye of some potential adopters lately. Once she’s spayed, she’ll be ready to find her forever family. Update 4/24/25: Today, Violet looks like a completely different dog. Her once patchy, irritated skin is now starting to grow fur, and her eyes shine with new life. Healing from such an extreme case of mange doesn’t happen overnight. While her fur has come a long way, she's still waiting on that final stretch of skin healing — and she’s almost there! With every week, Violet grows stronger, more confident, and more radiant. Update 5/2/25: Today was a major milestone for Violet — it was spay day! This step brings Violet one step closer to finding her forever home.

Fiona
Fiona's Fragile Fight: Help Fiona Overcome Her Painful Past
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
At only 1-2 years old, Fiona's already been through so much. When ThisIsHouston first saw videos of her last week, her sad eyes and tail tucked tightly between her legs broke their heart. Despite her fearful and fragile state, they knew they had to help her. ThisIsHouston offered to take Fiona in, but she went missing before they could reach her. Volunteers searched everywhere, asking anyone they could find, but no one had seen her. Just when they thought they'd never see her again, a kind-hearted Good Samaritan spotted her on Tuesday and reached out to ThisIsHouston. Fiona was finally found and brought safely to the ER for a full assessment. She’s in rough shape—severely dehydrated, covered in painful skin issues, and her abdomen was painfully swollen. X-rays revealed she has ingested foreign material, including bones, which have been troubling her system. But Fiona is a fighter. She ate well for the ER staff and her stomach should be able to handle the bones without complications, but she's not out of the woods yet. The medical bills are stacking up as the ER continues to monitor her condition and provide the treatment she needs. Your donation can help cover her ER visits, treatments, and long-term care as she recovers from both the physical and emotional scars of her past. Update 3/21/25: Fiona was discharged from the ER and is now in foster care. Her skin is already showing some improvement! On top of that, she is really coming out of her shell and showing her sweet personality. She is enjoying being loved and cared for. Update 3/28/25: We are so excited to share that Fiona tested heartworm negative! Heartworms are extremely common in Texas so this is extremely exciting news! Her hair is slowly growing in as well. Fiona's personality continues to shine. Her fosters say she's such a happy and wiggly girl and never has any complaints. We are so happy that she is doing so well! Update 4/25/25: Fiona's fur has nearly all grown back, revealing the soft, beautiful coat she was always meant to have. She's no longer mangey, and she's starting to look — and act — like the vibrant, healthy pup we always knew she could be. Just recently, Fiona underwent her spay surgery, another big milestone on her road to recovery. She handled it like a champ and is bouncing back with her signature gentle resilience.

Corina is ready for her new chapter. Let’s make it happen together.

Monty
A Heartbreaking Past, A Bright Future: Let’s Give Monty the Love He Deserves
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Monty’s life has been full of hardship, but despite everything, he’s never given up on love. For years, Monty was a loyal companion, staying near the home where he was abandoned, waiting for a family that never came. He’s never known the comfort of a warm bed or the simple pleasure of curling up on a couch. Instead, he lived as a stray, enduring the harsh realities of life outside. At some point, Monty was struck by a car. His right rear leg bore the brunt of the impact, leaving him with a healed fracture, and signs of changes to his bones in his chest. Still, he persevered. He’s been diagnosed with heartworm and Lyme disease, and he has severe demodex mange covering his entire body. There’s also a potential eye issue that may require specialist care. Monty was rescued, and he’s been receiving the critical care he desperately needs ever since. He lost his appetite, so a feeding tube was placed, and he’s been fighting dehydration with IV fluids. Despite all his struggles, he’s shown small improvements every day, but the road ahead is still long. Monty deserves a chance to know what it feels like to be loved, to feel safe, and to experience the comfort he’s never had. ThisIsHouston is doing everything they can to help him heal, but they need your help. Update 2/20/25: Monty is such a great boy! He’s made some wonderful progress, though his skin still has a long way to go. It’s heartwarming to see him getting spoiled and understanding what care feels like. He absolutely loves having his own bed and toys. Update 3/24/25: Monty is making slow but steady progress. His fur is growing in nicely and he is loving being spoiled in his foster home! It's amazing to watch their physical and emotional transformation!

Reggie
Reggie’s Resilience: Saving a Young Life, One Step at a Time
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Last night, a Good Samaritan found Reggie collapsed in the middle of the street, alone, frightened, and in severe pain. His condition was heartbreaking—extremely underweight, covered in wounds, and unable to even walk. He was left out in the cold, struggling, and in desperate need of help. The woman who found him kept him safe overnight, and then reached out to ThisIsHouston. Reggie was rushed to a veterinary emergency center. His situation was dire: in shock, dehydrated, anemic, and with dangerously low blood pressure. Reggie’s blood sugar was borderline low, and he was showing signs that his body was trying to heal, though there are so many challenges ahead. Reggie's injuries are overwhelming. He has been hit by a car at least twice, the most recent incident happening just hours before he was found. He has a scapula fracture, ACL tear in his right knee, old sacrum fracture, bruising or bleeding in his lungs, significant intestinal parasites, a possible foreign body in his GI tract, and vertebra damage. Reggie is only about a year old. He's been through so much but has lots of life and fight left in him. It's going to be a long road for Reggie, but ThisIsHouston is determined to give him his best chance at a happy, healthy life. Update 2/7/25: Reggie was transferred to a veterinary specialist for an MRI. While it is clear he has many fractures, he cannot currently walk and his hind legs have no withdraw. He does have deep pain sensation in his back legs though. His back left leg is also severely swollen, especially in his paws. Hopefully the MRI will provide some answers. Update 2/8/25: The specialist said there was nothing we could do to help him based off the neurologist's exam. We opted for a second opinion and he was transferred to a different clinic. He has been alert and vocal today as well as enjoying treats and lots of love. Hopefully we will have more information soon. Update 2/9/25: Reggie was moved from the specialists back to the ER where he had been receiving care, and then yesterday afternoon, he was transferred to a trusted facility with a skilled surgeon. They found Reggie's albumin levels are normal, he has deep pain sensation, his reflexes are intact, and anal tone is present. They plan to do a CT scan to get more clarity on his condition. While we still don’t know if we’ll be able to repair him, we’re feeling cautiously optimistic. It’s important to us to complete all the necessary diagnostics before making any decisions about his future. Update 2/12/25: Reggie seems to be doing alright. His appetite is sticking around really well and he’s been drinking water in moderation. Vitals have been normal all night and day so far, but temp has been bordering on a fever at 102.5 last night and 102 this morning — just barely enough to not technically be a fever but 102.5 is exactly the end of the high normal range. So the vet team is keeping an eye on that. Reggie's urinary catheter was pulled yesterday and he was observed overnight to see if he has bladder function. They say he DOES appear to have bladder function, so that’s just another positive sign for Reggie! The vet also observed that there are no drag marks on his knees or back legs which he definitely would have had if he wasn't walking prior to being found. This is a super important observation and hopefully means he was able to walk before this. Update 2/13/25: Overnight, Reggie's tech said he was sleeping comfortably in his kennel on a pile of soft blankets receiving his IV fluids and pain meds. He was eating very well and did urinate on his own. They added that he’s been a great patient, and that everyone has fallen for him (no surprise there). This morning though, he seems a bit uncomfortable. They had to express his bladder as there was just a tiny spot of urine in his kennel from overnight and his bladder was pretty big today. So they will keep an eye on that. Yesterday his temp was a little high, but it’s a little low today so he’s been on some heat support. His bloodwork this morning showed he’s still a little anemic so the vet recommended doing a blood transfusion and rechecking the bloodwork tomorrow. His transfusion started a couple hours ago. He continues to eat well. If all is better tomorrow, he’ll have surgery then. Update 2/14/25: Reggie had surgery this morning! His blood transfusion yesterday kicked his PCV up to 41%. The vet and some of his surgery team came in first thing this morning and got his procedures done. Everything went well, and he did very well under anesthesia. He had a Laminectomy and a scapula repair and the vet used plates and screws for both repairs. He’s still on IV fluids until he shows more interest in drinking, but he’s still eating great. He also had a good amount of urine in his kennel overnight, so it appears he does in fact have use of his baldder. His techs are keeping a close eye on his bedding to make sure he stays dry. His current bill at this one clinic is $7,958.54, and this does not include the bills at the other two clinics he's been seen at. While his expenses are high, giving Reggie a chance is truly worth it! Update 2/15/25: Reggie post surgery update! Temp is good at 101.3, and he's still urinating on his own. He seems bright and alert, ate his small meal, and actually drank some water. You got this, Reggie! Update 2/16/25: Reggie is stable and making progress! Today he had his first laser therapy session. Update 2/17/25: Reggie continues to do as best as possible! He transitioned to all oral meds, his appetite continues to be great, the incisions look good, and he's been pushing himself around his kennel. He does range of motion exercises a few times throughout the day. Time will tell how much movement he'll get back, but we love to see him content. Update 2/19/25: Reggie is still being a strong boy! He's still eating well and loving the dry puppy food. He's making some slow progress and is starting to pull back his hind legs when doing his therapies. The right leg seems stronger at this time, but he’s doing range of motion exercises and getting some massages on all four legs twice daily for now until he’s more healed. Then we can look into what else can be added in for him. For now, we’re continuing with some laser therapy on his shoulder and down his back. This will help keep him as comfortable as possible and help speed up some healing. Update 2/21/25: Reggie seems to be feeling a little peppier today! He was caught rubbing his face and gently mouthing at his tech’s legs and hands, almost like he was trying to play—such a sweet moment to witness! While he’s still slow in his movements and has a long road ahead, it's encouraging to see glimpses of his personality returning. He’s doing well with his twice-daily therapies and is showing more strength in his right back leg compared to the left. Yesterday, he even placed his front left foot a few times while standing, which is a great sign since he usually tries to hold it up. His appetite is strong, and he's drinking well. He’s urinating a little on his own, but for now, they still need to express him. He’s getting lots of love and care at the clinic, and we’re hopeful for his continued progress! Update 2/25/25: Reggie developed a cough suspected to be just kennel cough, so he’s been in isolation but doing well otherwise! Here’s an update from his tech: “Still having good bowel movements on his own and eating/drinking great. Is urinating a bit more on his own from overnight, but still expressing his bladder as needed. Was about softball sized this morning and easily expressed. We have him on the Prazosin to help his bladder function still. He does well for his therapies and although he is a little suspicious of treats at first [he] loves them lol. He did pull his hind legs back a few times this morning which is more than he did yesterday. He was a lot better about that last week, so hoping he will get back to that point. Stood him up and helped him walk to his kennel after his exercises, is a little unstable so did have to hold him under his chest as well as his rear end but he didn’t do too bad. Had a few coughs this morning but overall is still doing pretty well.” We are so excited about the progress he is making! Update 3/5/25: Reggie was introduced to a toy and has been sitting up on his own! He wasn’t sure what to do with the toy, but he’ll figure out toys soon enough. He has a lot of interest in walking around on his front legs. He also has a lot more strength on both back legs! He pulled the left one away from his tech more than he had been when doing his flex and extensions; that leg tends to be the weaker leg. And on the right hind leg, he had some pretty decent muscle tone going through his range of motions. He's still eating/drinking great and defecating on his own. He's still not 100% with being able to urinate on his own but when expressed it is done so easily. Reggie still has a long way to go but we’ll take any small wins he will give! Update 3/10/25: Reggie is waiting on an arm wound to fully heal, but once that is complete, he'll be able to start water therapy!! Update 4/9/25: Reggie started physical therapy and it is going well! He is regaining strength, but still needs help getting around. We are getting him a wheelchair, but don't want him to rely on it too much and hinder his progress. So the plan is for him to continue physical therapy and to use the wheelchair sparin

Kia
A Cold Road, A Warm Heart: Help Kia’s Transformation
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
A kind soul reached out to ThisIsHouston about a little girl in need—Kia, a sweet, young pup who had been wandering alone and sleeping on a county road. With the freezing weather just around the corner, she had no time to lose. Despite her situation, no one in the neighborhood was claiming her. She was vulnerable, cold, and in desperate need of help. Thankfully, ThisIsHouston had an open foster home ready and waiting, so they swooped in to save Kia from the harsh conditions. She’s now in their care, safe and warm, and they're giving her the love she deserves as she recovers from her rough start. She's estimated to be around 6-9 months old, and although she’s still decompressing, it's already clear she’s a total sweetheart. She’s resting and adjusting to her new environment, but ThisIsHouston is committed to getting her to the vet for a full check-up soon. After that, they'll be working hard to find Kia her perfect forever home, where she can finally experience the love and stability she’s been missing. But they need your help to make sure Kia gets the care and support she deserves along the way. Your donation will go directly toward her medical expenses, including vetting, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, and any other care she needs as she gets ready for her new life.

Zeke
From Heartbreak to Hope: Zeke’s Road to Recovery
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Zeke was abandoned in the rain, left crying in a kennel at an apartment complex with nothing but his belongings. His owners, captured on a doorbell camera, dropped him off and drove away, leaving him to suffer. He was found with a bleeding tail, likely the result of a traumatic injury—whether from self-mutilation, another animal, or worse, human abuse. Zeke was rushed to Vergi 24/7 Animal Hospital, where the damage to his tail was so severe that it had to be amputated. Despite his painful past, Zeke is a healthy, sweet boy who still has so much love to give. Now, he’s safe, and receiving the medical care he desperately needed. Zeke's journey is far from over, but in just a few short days of love and care, he has already made incredible strides. The pain he once endured is slowly being replaced by trust, comfort, and hope. This sweet boy is beginning an exciting new chapter in his life—one where he can finally feel safe and loved. His heart is healing, and so is his body, as he learns to trust again. Zeke may have been let down by those who should have loved him, but with your support, we can show him the kindness, care, and compassion he deserves. Every dollar brings him one step closer to recovery and a future filled with happiness and security. Update 2/3/25: Zeke is hanging in there, though still facing some challenges. His tail was partially amputated, and he has been discharged into foster care for recovery. During his stay, another wound on his back was discovered, adding to the mystery of what he’s endured. He’s still in a lot of pain and has been reacting by chasing, snarling, and growling at his tail. Today, he had a visit with a new vet to start a fresh course of medication, which will hopefully help manage his pain and give him some relief. Despite everything, Zeke remains a sweet boy at heart. The current focus is on helping him manage his pain so he can rest, heal, and begin to fully recover. Update 2/9/25: Zeke's tail was partially amputated at the ER and the poor guy has had a rough recovery. He’s been snarling, growling, and chasing his tail. Then he sits on it which causes even more pain. It’s just been tough, but his foster mom is doing absolutely everything to make this as easy as possible for him. When he’s not distracted by his tail, he’s been totally sweet. He's making slow progress but has a long way to go until he is physically and emotionally healed.

Jack Frost
A Senior Dog’s Story of Survival: Support Jack Frost’s Golden Years
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
This is the story of Jack Frost, a 12-year-old dog who has endured more than anyone should, but is now ready to be loved in his golden years. His tale isn’t one of abandonment — it’s one of survival, of hope, and of second chances. Jack Frost was found wandering the streets of Sugar Land. Alone, confused, and scared, this sweet senior boy had nowhere to turn. Thankfully, a local shelter reached out for help when they discovered that Jack had a microchip. But the mystery deepened when the chip traced back to a senior living facility with no information about Jack’s family or history. The facility confirmed that they do not allow pets, and no one came forward to claim him. The shelter couldn’t bear to leave him behind, so they contacted ThisIsHouston. At 12 years old, Jack’s body has been through more than it should have. His bloodwork showed that he is in stage 2 of kidney disease, and he is now on a special diet to help manage his condition. Jack’s body is frail — skin and bones. His coat is a tangled mess, and he is blind in his left eye. His journey toward better health will require ongoing care, dedication, and medical attention. Jack’s resilience is nothing short of remarkable and it's a miracle he survived on the streets. Let’s make Jack’s story one of hope and healing. Please donate to help Jack get the comfort, love, and care he has always deserved! Update 2/12/25: After a couple visits with an ophthalmologist, it was determined that the best course of action was to remove his bad eye. He also had a dental at the same time and surprisingly only needed 2 teeth removed. He is recovering well so far in his loving foster home.

Nick
A Gentle Giant’s Recovery: Help Nick Receive Life-Changing Surgery And Stand Tall Again
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Nick is a 3-year-old St. Bernard who, just days ago, was seen falling out of the back of a moving truck. He was terrified, injured, and alone. When Nick arrived at the shelter, his injuries were devastating. His back was broken and luxated, leaving him unable to stand for long, but his determination shone through. He still had feeling in his legs – a sign that there was hope. The shelter reached out to several rescues, but no one could commit to helping this big, gentle giant. Without intervention, Nick would have faced the heartbreaking decision of euthanasia. But ThisIsHouston couldn’t turn their back on him. They decided to give Nick a fighting chance. He underwent surgery and Nick now has two plates and screws to stabilize his spine. Nick’s injuries are just part of the story. He also has a ruptured anal gland, heartworms, and a severe flea infestation. He’s suffered from urine scalding and pressure sores. But his caring veterinary team is working tirelessly to manage his symptoms and provide him with the best care possible. Despite everything he’s been through, he remains a sweet, gentle giant. He’s calm, loving, and ready to trust again. The road to recovery for Nick will be long and expensive. His surgery, medical care, and ongoing therapies are costly. But with your support, Nick has the chance he deserves to live a life full of love. Update 1/22/2025: Nick’s been at the vet for a month now; getting surgery, recovering, and then he had a cough which was diagnosed as k9 parainfluenza and streptococcus. He’s been in isolation for a few weeks and recently recovered. He started physical therapy last Friday and is doing range of motion exercises as well as short standing exercises. With the motion and muscle tone he has in the back legs right now, the vet is hopeful that with strong tactile therapy & e-stim, there will be some pretty good results. Nick should be discharged this weekend into foster care. Rehab is going to take some time and Nick has a long road ahead, but we’re all hopeful for a full recovery. Update 1/24/2025: Nick is on track to be discharged this weekend and head into his foster home! He’s currently fecal incontinent so that’s going to be a big challenge in addition to his size (he’s currently 121 lbs currently), but his fosters have not backed down from taking him in and helping him. Nick will start physical therapy next week and in between PT sessions, he’ll get to use a TENS unit (as recommended by his current vet). He’s been standing lately, especially when he sees the techs get his harness out. He tries to “help” and get up and move. His personality has been coming out a ton more and more each day. Lately he’s been trying to play and has even been slapping his techs with his paws when they leave; just generally wanting more attention which is a great sign! Update 2/3/25: Nick is holding steady, but unfortunately, he lost his foster home for a couple of reasons. While he was in foster care, we learned a lot about him—though he’s a bit stubborn, he’s an incredible boy with so much potential. His weight is a major concern right now, as he weighs 121lbs. We knew this would be a factor when we committed to helping him, but we were hoping for the best. While we were told he had great anal tone, he is unfortunately fecal and urinary incontinent, which presents a huge challenge. He requires 3-4 people to bathe him, and he needs to stay clean throughout the day. He can stand, but not on his own, and he is still unable to walk. Yesterday, Nick was taken back to NVC Nederland where he’ll be boarding and receiving physical therapy. While he had one hydrotherapy session in foster care, we were planning for weekly sessions. NVC will now manage his therapy, and they have the expertise and resources to provide him with the care he urgently needs. We’re hopeful that physical therapy over the next few weeks will show positive results. To be transparent, as a team, we’ve agreed that without improvement, Nick's quality of life would be extremely limited, and finding someone capable of providing the care he requires would be nearly impossible. However, right now, we’re holding onto hope for some progress. Update 3/4/25: Nick is gradually gaining strength and making progress with his physical therapy. Overall, he's doing well, though he is still 'knuckling' on his back legs and has quite a journey ahead of him. But even slow progress is still progress! Nick can be a bit stubborn with most of his techs, but he's formed a special bond with Brandi. He even stood up for her today and took a few steps! In fact, he was strong enough to stand during his bath today! Update 5/19/25: This sweet, strong boy continues to amaze us every single day! Earlier this month, Nick had his eyes tacked open — a big step forward — and we’re thrilled to share that they’re healing beautifully. He’s already seeing the world more clearly, and it’s making a huge difference in his confidence and awareness. Next month, he’ll return to the ophthalmologist for a check-up and to see if a second surgery might be needed. Nick also has new bands for his feet that help build strength, guide his feet into the correct walking position, and encourage his toes to align properly (instead of knuckling under). These aren’t worn all day — he uses them 3 to 6 times daily as part of his therapy routine. And the biggest joy to share? Nick is standing and walking so well! Watching his progress — his determination, resilience, and bright spirit — has been such a beautiful experiences.

Mistletoe
A Holiday of Hope: Mistletoe Magic for a Courageous Soul
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
The resilience of an animal is always something to admire; but when it comes to Mistletoe, it's downright unbelievable. She’s just a puppy—only 6 to 8 months old, if that—and yet, has already endured so much. She was found cowering underneath a trailer in a heartbreaking condition: abandoned with an embedded collar around her neck, riddled with infections, and struggling desperately to survive. Her condition isn’t something that happens overnight. She's wounded, she's missing patches of fur due to the mites, fleas, and untreated Mange that were ravaging her skin. She's dehydrated and dangerously malnourished. Her belly was tender and sore. She was nothing but skin and bone, with her paws swollen and infected to the point they were oozing discharge. And to top it all off, she was also severely anemic and needed a blood transfusion upon getting to the ER. Unfortunately, this precious girl will be recovering for some time: Physical conditions like Mistletoe’s require weeks, even months, of extensive care. Her blood work has been concerning—though there are signs of improvement, she is far from out of the woods. Mistletoe's still fighting secondary infections, and her blood work results continue to raise red flags for neurological risks. And even beyond this, her emotional recovery will take not only months, but also lots of careful love, some sleepless nights, and most of all, worlds of patience. But Mistletoe deserves the world—and after all that she's been through, rescuers at ThisIsHouston are committed to making sure she gets nothing but the best for her future. This precious girl is just barely beginning her road to recovery, and she needs an army of help to heal: help from her rescuers; help from her specialty doctors; and help from all of you. Please send Mistletoe snuggles and lots of positive energy, and if you are able to assist with her ongoing medical care, please consider donating to this fundraiser. Every penny matters, and will go a long way in supporting this resilient, deserving girl. Thank you for your kindness and support! Update 12/17/24: Mistletoe turned quite urgent. ThisIsHouston went to visit her this evening, and they noticed she was cheek puffing (breathing through her mouth with her cheeks puffing up). When ThisIsHouston got back home, the vet called them with an update that Mistletoe's on oxygen now. They took some x-rays which show she has congestive heart failure, likely from fluid overload or a complication due to refeeding syndrome. While ThisisHouston doesn't know what this means for her yet, they're not giving up on her! Update 12/18/24: Mistletoe has made improvements overnight and is off oxygen already. The hospital is anticipating she’ll require at least FOUR more days of care to ensure she reaches an adequate daily nutritional intake. ThisIsHouston transferred Mistletoe to another animal hospital for a second opinion and to help save some costs. It’s been a bumpy road so far with improvements and setbacks but ThisIsHouston is hopeful she’s finally trending in the right direction. Yesterday Mistletoe was put on oxygen and x-rays appeared to suggest she had congestive heart failure. The vet ran an echocardiogram today which showed no major concerns. Some measurements were high, but cardiac therapy is not indicated at this time. Prior to this, she was struggling with anemia levels and needed two blood transfusions. That has resolved. She was severely dehydrated as well, with bone fragments in her stomach. Her dehydration is almost completely resolved and she had a bowel movement yesterday with a bone shard piece in it, so we’re keeping a close eye on that. Her calorie intake is currently at 50% and she’s still tolerating her feedings well. She still has a central catheter placed, a urinary catheter and a feeding tube as well. Update 12/19/24: Mistletoe's labwork has much improved!! She had two blood transfusions since being rescued; her red blood cell count is currently normal and the vet is watching for any changes. She’s back on dextrose support as her blood sugar wasn’t where vet wanted it to be. But she’s eating appropriate amounts and the hope is once she’s eating more consistently, her sugar levels normalize. Update 12/20/24: Mistletoe is discharge ready tonight! Her bloodwork is much improved, blood glucose and sodium levels are normal, and she’s even up and walking. She will continue to need bloodwork rechecks every few days to make sure things are still stable. Mistletoe is headed into a foster home tonight. ThisIsHouston is so excited to start the spoiling 💗 She ran a hefty ER bill between the two hospitals so anything and everything is helpful. Update 12/27/24: Mistletoe had a setback today. Her foster mom noticed she was a little bit weak this morning. She already had a vet check up scheduled for this afternoon and when she went in, they referred her to the ER. The ER vet found her blood sugar was a little low and her esophagus was very dilated. Thankfully her lungs looked clear there was no evidence of any aspiration pneumonia. The vet said sometimes when animals are nauseas, they can get a bad case of reflux, or sometimes heart burn can make the esophagus irritated. He thinks once they figure out what is going on and get her better, the swallowing issues will return to normal. The major concern right now is that her sodium levels are creeping back up and there’s a big risk for neurological issues to develop when sodium levels are high. If it progresses, she could have seizures, so they’re keeping an eye on that. The plan is to keep her on IV fluids, antibiotics, anti-acids for her esophagus, and try to get her to eat. Update 12/30/24: Mistletoe was transferred this morning to an internal medicine specialist for further diagnostics. She's not doing well and looking very rough. She is extremely lethargic and dull. The ER vet worked hard through the weekend to maintain her vitals, but Mistletoe needed to see a specialty hospital for a swallow test and further imaging to figure out why she can’t drink and eat appropriately. Once at the specialist, Mistletoe's blood pressure and temperature dropped and the vet spent the day working to stabilize her. Something was wrong internally and none of the three hospitals she received care at had answers. ThisIsHouston focuses on dogs like Mistletoe and believe in giving them every possible chance to recover, but Mistletoe was rapidly declining today. The specialty hospital believed she was already septic and was also obtunded. ThisIsHouston came together as a team to make the best decision for Mistletoe. She was suffering and there was no end in sight and no answers, so they had to make the decision they always try to avoid. Mistletoe was the sweetest girl. She deserved the world, and ThisIsHouston desperately wanted to give that to her. ThisIsHouston wish she had more time, but made sure Mistletoe knew love and care before she passed. Many thanks to those who were in her corner and donated towards her care. Her bills are over $25K and your contribution towards her fight is greatly appreciated.

Rosalie
Saved from the Streets: Donate for Life-Saving Surgery!
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Rosalie was spotted on the streets, helpless and in agony from a severe rectal prolapse. She had been stranded in the same spot for days, with no one stepping up to help her. As her condition worsened, animal control was finally called, and she was rushed to safety. At the shelter, Rosalie underwent a purse-string procedure to repair her prolapse. But when ThisIsHouston picked her up on Saturday, her condition took a dramatic turn. The purse string was removed, and she immediately began prolapsing again—this time actively bleeding as her condition rapidly deteriorated. Racing against time, ThisIsHouston sent Rosalie straight to Blue Pearl ER. The estimated cost of her care was staggering: $8,000–$12,000, but they couldn't let her down. Rosalie is just 4 years old, and her spirit remains unbroken despite her suffering. She’s an absolute sweetheart, trusting and affectionate, even after everything she’s endured. Rosalie’s road to recovery will be long, but she’s now safe with a foster family who will allow her time to heal in a safe environment. Your donations will ensure she gets the life-saving care she needs and the future filled with love she was always meant to have. Update 12/9/24: Rosalie received her second surgery — she had a colopexy and a second purse-string procedure to correct her rectal prolapse. The purse-string will be left for two weeks to give everything the best chance to heal. She did need a blood transfusion due to hookworm anemia, but she handled the transfusion and surgery well. She had some serous fluid within her abdomen which was likely a result of severe inflammation from her prolapse complications. She was started on some antibiotics in case it turns into an infection. They also noticed some small nodules on the surface of her colon. They suspect it’s probably from inflammation but going to submit some samples for biopsies just in case. She’s straining with some diarrhea today so she’ll stay at least another day. Her care is costly, but she’s worth every cent. And we’re so thankful for all of you helping us provide her with the best possible care. THANK YOU! Update 1/9/25: After a $11,114.45 ER bill, Rosalie was discharged into foster care where she’s been doing great! She hasn’t prolapsed since and there have been no issues at all. We’re so glad that’s all behind her. She’s still working to put some weight on and will be starting heartworm treatment soon. An expensive girl, but worth it! Update 3/4/25: Rosalie was found in December with a rectal prolapse that needed surgery- twice! She has fully recovered and just completed heartworm treatment to get rid of those pesky worms! She's now waiting for her perfect forever home!

Pepe
From Stray to Survivor: Help Pepe Heal and Find a Forever Home
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Meet Pepe, a 5-year-old Chihuahua with a heart full of resilience and a will to survive against all odds. Just weeks ago, Pepe was picked up as a stray by animal control, his life hanging by a thread. With injuries that could have been fatal, it was only by a stroke of fate—and the quick action of a dedicated volunteer—that Pepe’s story didn’t end there. At the very last moment before the shelter closed, an urgent plea went out to save this sweet dog from euthanasia. Without hesitation, ThisIsHouston stepped in and a kind volunteer rushed Pepe to the ER, where he underwent urgent surgery to repair a severe laceration near his groin. But his suffering didn’t stop with surgery. Pepe had also suffered a concussion and was covered in painful puncture wounds, requiring days of intensive care. Pepe’s journey is one of survival, but it’s far from over. He still needs ongoing medical care, including daily bandage changes and monitoring to ensure his wounds heal properly. His ER bill alone has already reached $5,000, a tremendous financial burden. But here’s the thing—Pepe is a fighter. Despite everything he’s been through, he still greets every day with a gentle and resilient spirit. He deserves the chance to heal, recover, and, one day, find a loving forever home. With your help, we can make that dream a reality. Update 12/28/24: Pepe had a big day yesterday! He got neutered and had a dental as well. He had severe dental disease when ThisIsHouston got him and needed 10 teeth pulled. Poor guy only has two incisors left, but he’s doing great and is back to normal today. He likes to make rounds around the perimeter of his backyard, and he’s back to doing handstand pees; he’s pretty talented 😆 He gets along with all the dogs in his foster home, and doesn’t seem scared of bigger dogs which is a good sign considering he was attacked by another animal. His foster mom says he’s such an easy dog. Pepe has come a long way and is now waiting for his perfect forever home! While Pepe is doing well, his hefty bills still remain and ThisIsHouston needs your help to pay for his care.

Buddy
Buddy's Battle: Give Him the Second Chance He Deserves
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
When ThisIsHouston found him, this tiny puppy—barely four or five months old—was clinging to life by the thinnest thread. He was skeletal, his body stripped of any hint of muscle or fat. Every bone was a testament to unimaginable cruelty, every breath a struggle to survive. But despite the odds, Buddy was still fighting—*clinging* to his second chance. From the moment they laid eyes on this precious boy, the rescuers at ThisIsHouston knew they had to fight. While his breathing was faint and there was no energy left in his tiny frame, his eyes seemed to beg for a kindness he’d never truly known. Right now, Buddy's condition is touch-and-go and he is being monitored around the clock. His blood sugar remains dangerously low and he remains on IV support, as well as getting fed carefully every three hours to avoid refeeding syndrome—a deadly risk for those starved to this extreme. And it’s exactly why the team is working so slowly and meticulously—making sure he gets exactly what he needs without putting him in more danger. One will NEVER understand why anyone could turn their backs' on this poor boy, or why hunger gripped him so mercilessly. Yet now, for the first time, Buddy is FINALLY in loving hands. Now, he has people who believe in his resilience, his spirit, and his will to live. Despite everything he’s been through, Buddy is a fighter. The road ahead will be long and fraught with challenges, but Buddy deserves nothing less than our full effort. He’s already survived the darkest side of humanity. With your help, he can finally experience its best. Your donation will provide the medical care, careful nutrition, and round-the-clock support he so desperately needs. Together, we can take Buddy from the brink of death to a life filled with warmth, health, and the love he’s never known before. Update 12/12/24: When we first got to him, poor Buddy was so skinny and frail that you could see each bone in his body. Poor guy had been deteriorating away for months because he just kept getting ignored. He was also anemic and needed a blood transfusion, but after several days of hospitalization, he’s on the right track! He recently underwent a vet check up and things are looking up: bloodwork, weight, everything’s headed in the right direction. He promptly fell asleep after entertaining the whole lobby on our way out, and naturally, everyone loved him! We discovered he howls like a beagle when he gets excited—it's such a joy watching him figure out who he is and what he loves! Thank you to all who are rooting and supporting Buddy on his recovery journey. More updates to come!

Penelope
Help Penelope the Pug Receive Crucial Eye Treatment!
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Meet Penelope, a 7-week-old Pug who weighs just 1 pound—half the size of her littermates. Born to a backyard breeder, Penelope’s fragile state made it clear she needed urgent care. When she came into our care, she was lethargic, struggling to thrive, and suffering from serious health issues. Penelope’s tiny body has endured so much. She has a ruptured cornea and a detached retina in one eye. We’re doing everything we can to save her vision, including treatment with specialized eye drops over the next two weeks. However, we won’t know the full extent of the damage until time and treatment tell us more. She’s also dealing with minor defecation issues and requires medication and constant monitoring. Penelope was hospitalized at Vergi 24/7 before coming into our care. While she’s on the road to recovery, she still needs heat support to help regulate her body temperature. Penelope’s journey is just beginning, and she has a long way to go. Despite her rough start, she’s a fighter, and we’re committed to giving her the best possible chance at a happy, healthy life, but we can't do it alone. Penelope’s medical bills are adding up quickly, and we need your support. Every donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward her treatment and recovery. Please help us give this tiny, precious girl a chance to thrive. Together, we can save Penelope’s eye, her health, and her future. Donate today. Update 12/10/24: Penelope’s bad eye took a turn and is now shrinking. We’ve already determined with an ophthalmologist that she has no vision in that eye, but we were still hopeful we could save the eye itself. With it shrinking now, she will likely need it removed. She’s still too tiny and young so surgery will probably wait until she’s old enough for a spay. But she’s doing great in all other aspects and is growing healthy and strong.

Rocket, Drax & Groot
Heartbreaking Rescue: Abandoned Puppies Found Injured—Help Give Them a Chance at Life!
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Sadly, four tiny puppies, less than 10 days old with their eyes still closed, were found abandoned along a highway in Madisonville, Texas. They were cruelly tossed away, with no one to care for them. Thankfully, a bystander spotted them and immediately brought them to local authorities, who rushed the puppies to a nearby vet. But what the vets discovered was heartbreaking. These little ones had already suffered deeply in their short lives. Their legs had been sliced to the tendons, their tails were cut off, and some of their limbs were dislocated. The injuries were so severe that one of the baby girls didn’t make it. Without a shelter in Madison County, these puppies were desperately in need of a rescue's aid. ThisIsHouston welcomed them into their care with open arms. An investigator delivered the three surviving puppies to them on Tuesday evening, and they immediately took them to the ER. While Drax miraculously has no injuries, Groot is missing part of his tail, and Rocket has a serious laceration on his right front leg and a wounded paw pad. His injuries are severe, and he may need surgery. We're heartbroken for their lost sister and the mother, wherever she may be, but we're grateful these brave souls are now safe. Every gift, large or small, will help give Drax, Groot, and Rocket a chance at a life filled with love and safety. Please donate today.

Blue
Help Baby Blue Fight: Support a Little Warrior’s Journey to Recovery! 💙
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Meet Blue💙 A fighter with a bright future! At just 7 weeks old, little Blue was found alone on the streets. Fort Bend County animal control picked him up on October 2, and it was clear he was in rough shape. Blue was pale, cold, and so weak he could barely stand. His tiny body showed signs of neglect—his ribs, spine, and pelvis all visible, and his fur was stained yellow, likely from urine scald. His little belly was swollen, and his chances didn’t look good, but Blue’s story was far from over. The dedicated vet team at the shelter stepped in immediately, giving him dextrose, a blood transfusion, IV fluids, and warmth to support his fragile body. With their expert care and a whole lot of love, Blue began to show signs of improvement and slowly regain his spirit. On October 7, the shelter sent out a call for rescue, and a kind-hearted ThisIsHouston foster, Kathryn, answered. She picked up Blue the very next day, and under her loving watch, he’s been thriving. He’s already started his vaccines and, if all goes well, he’ll be ready for a local adoption trial in Texas in just a few weeks! Blue has come so far, but still needs ongoing medical support for a full recovery. With your help, we can cover his medical expenses, and ensure he has a chance at a happy life. Every donation counts and will go toward Blue’s continued care. Join us in helping Blue find his happily-ever-after. Please donate today and be part of his remarkable journey. Update 10/31/24: Blue came down with carpal laxity syndrome most likely caused by malnutrition. The veterinarian said it's in all 4 legs, just more prominent in his front left. The growth plates are growing faster than the bones in his legs and feet. His foster mom is doing some range of motion exercises and he is expected to make much improvement with that and a good diet.

Jason Derulo
Save Jason Derulo: Help Us Give This Brave Pup a Fresh Start!
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
We urgently need your help to save Jason Derulo, a loving 5-month-old Chihuahua mix who has endured unimaginable suffering in such a short lifespan. He was found abandoned on a back country road by Sylvia, who came across him as he was dodging cars in the street. She immediately pulled over. He was shaking and covered in mange and ant bites. When Sylvia took him home, she posted for help. ThisIsHouston saw her plea to save him and without a doubt offered their assistance. She then dropped him off at the ER for immediate treatment. He was diagnosed with demodex, which are microscopic mites that live in hair follicles, sarcoptic mange, and a heart murmur that he will be getting rechecked soon. He’s currently healing and recovering in foster care where he’s slowly growing his hair back. However, more support is needed to ensure that he makes a full recovery and finds a loving home where he can have a chance to live a long and happy life. Every dollar donated will go directly towards covering medicated baths, heart murmur rechecks, and other medications he needs. Together, we can help him recover and find a loving home. Thank you for your continued support.

Conrad
A Second Chance for Conrad: Help This Brave Puppy Heal After Unimaginable Pain
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
ThisIsHouston Conrad was found on the street in McAllen, TX in grave condition. He was clearly the victim of an attack, mostly likely from other dogs, and suffering from extensive injuries. He was partially scalped and part of his left ear was ripped off. He had multiple open bite wounds on the entire front half of his body. The worst part, though, was three of his legs were broken. The end of the humerus snapped on his right forelimb, he has a fracture on his left forelimb radius, and a fracture on his left hindlimb. Conrad needed help immediately. He initially arrived at the vet in a shock-like condition and needed to be stabilized. He was doing fairly well, but then he began vomiting. His stomach became distended with a lot of gas and food wasn't moving. A volunteer flew him up to Houston from McAllen where he was found. Conrad is now currently resting comfortably at Blue Pearl ER which is a specialty hospital. He had been throwing up small amounts during his trip and Blue Pearl says he’s got ileus - temporary lack of the normal muscle contractions of the intestines. A urinary catheter was placed along with a jugular catheter and a feeding tube. Conrad’s been at the vet since being found, getting his wounds tended to, getting a blood transfusion, and having surgery on 2 of his legs. Currently, he’s stable, vitals are well, and he’s eating well. He’s still regurgitating so his vets are making adjustments with his meds and plan to feed him more frequent meals rather than larger ones. He’s clear from pneumonia as of today but he has a URI brewing so he’s starting meds for that too. Conrad is just 13 weeks old but has already suffered so much. He has an arduous journey ahead, but ThisIsHouston is determined to provide him with every chance at a normal, healthy life, no matter the cost. Please consider donating to help Conrad get the care he needs! Update: 10/10/24: Conrad is doing well, he is eating well with no regurgitation, and his feeding tube has been non-productive, so the vet is planning on removing it tomorrow. His nasal discharge has improved a lot and he was brighter today. His urine output is much more appropriate and he has clear urine. His anemia has improved and his PCV (packed cell volume) was 28% this morning. His right elbow is quite swollen at this point post op and may be infected. His right ear base wound has opened up and has a bit of discharge. Still waiting for his culture results, so hopefully once we change his antibiotic, his wounds start healing better. In the meantime, they’re cleaning his ear base wounds and bandaging it. So Conrad is doing better in some areas but still struggling with his wounds and incision. Sweet baby has ways to go, but we know he’ll get there! Update: 10/12/24: An update from Conrad's veterinarian: “Conrad is doing well. He is eating well and has not had any regurgitation. We will be changing his neck bandage today, still waiting on culture results. His right forelimb swelling is better but he doesn't want to use it much. He can stand a little longer than before but still can't get around much. We are removing his back leg splint on Monday so his mobility should improve drastically then. Once he can get around better, we can remove his urinary catheter." Update: 10/15/24: Conrad is standing on all of his legs!! He's still at the specialty hospital continuing to rest comfortably, his vitals remain normal, and he’s still eating great. The veterinary team on his case said Conrad's showing his silly personality more every day. We love to see his puppy side coming out! Thanks to those who have been rooting for him! Update: 10/16/24: Conrad was found with 3 broken limbs. Two required surgery, and the third is expected to heal on its own with kennel rest. That leg (right forelimb) had some swelling, but it has improved. Radiographs showed the right elbow implants are stable. The plan is to let the bones heal and probably remove the implants in 2-3 weeks. The veterinarian is hoping to pull his urinary catheter tomorrow and monitor his urination overnight. Conrad might be able to discharged into foster care on Friday, but he’ll still have lots of recovery and therapy ahead of him. Update: 10/18/24: Conrad was discharged from the ER today!!! He still has a very difficult, long journey ahead but we are so happy for this little guy. However, his hefty ER bill remains and his future care will continue to add to his costs. Any donation is greatly appreciated! Update 11/21/24: Conrad has continued to heal wonderfully, except for his right forelimb. The lameness in that leg continued to worsen; he wasn’t using it much at all, and his elbow began to bleed. That was the leg with tons of infection in the beginning. It was becoming super painful for him, and he had a consult with his surgeon. We could’ve attempted to fix it again but he could’ve possibly needed multiple revisions. Because of his discomfort, we opted for amputation. But no worries, four legs or three legs, he continues to be a warrior. Update 12/4/24: Conrad’s all healed up from his amputation and has been doing so well. Everyone who meets him comments on how well behaved he is, especially for a puppy. We may be biased but he’s pretty perfect!

Percy
From Trash to Treasure: Help Make Percy's Transformation Possible!
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Percy is a young pup that was found at an apartment complex locked in a kennel next to a dumpster amongst trash. A resident witnessed a lady dumping him there. It’s hard to fathom how any person could do this. He’s not trash, he’s a living being and didn’t deserve this at all. He needed help, not to be thrown out. Thankfully that witness took action and got Percy to safety. Percy was immediately taken to the ER. He has severe skin issues including open sores, pustules and oozing discharge. Fortunately he’s got a great appetite and has been eating well. His bloodwork was surprisingly good but is being monitored to make sure his numbers don’t drop. He tested positive for hookworms and started dewormer. He’s getting baths and scrubs every 12 hours to try and get some crustiness off. Some of his bigger wounds have puss pockets that are being flushed out. After about 4 days at the ER, Percy was discharged and is now in a foster home. However, he still has a long road ahead. He will continue to need medicated baths and close monitoring. You know the saying: one man's trash is another man's treasure. Percy is definitely a treasure! ThisIsHouston is determined to give Percy everything he needs for a second chance. Please consider donating! Update 10/16/24: We’re two days shy from his month-aversary with us. He’s still slowly recovering from severe skin issues, and hasn’t grown new fur yet, but he will soon. His foster family has fallen in love with him and adore him tons! We can’t wait to see him in another month! Update 10/31/24: Percy has made an incredible transformation! His beautiful brindle coat is now growing in and he looks like a completely new dog. The exciting news continues: Percy has been adopted by his foster family! He’ll forever be loved by those who helped Percy heal and get him to where he is today. We are so excited for Percy! However, his treatment costs remain and any support is greatly appreciated. You guys help make these transformations possible and we couldn’t do what we do without all of you!

Fester
Fester is a 8 month old Pug in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Hospitalization, Femur Surgery, and Eye Surgery.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
ThisIsHouston Fester was hit by a car and sustained a femur fracture in his right back leg and couldn’t walk so he was just laying in the ditch on the side of the road. He also has chronic dry eyes with ulcers and cannot see very well. It hurts to think about him laying there waiting for help and to think about what could’ve happened had someone not noticed him. He was immediately taken to the ER where it was determined he needed a blood transfusion for anemia. He's already had surgery for his femur fracture and doing well but has weeks of recovery ahead. The next step was the ophthalmology specialist for his eyes. They did some testing on his eyes and found his “good” eye (the right one) had zero tear production, so this eye is severely dry. The bad eye, his left eye, had ruptured and his iris prolapsed. Fester did surprisingly have functional vision in that eye and we wanted to try to salvage it. However, during surgery it was determined his cornea was so severely damaged the graft prognosis was low so the eye was removed. Fester is only estimated to be about 9 months old. He has his whole life ahead of him and we’re happy he’s getting a second chance at life. Please consider donating and helping him during his healing journey! Update 9/27/24: Fester has healed incredibly well and had a check up with his surgeons today. They say he’s doing really well, but he’s got to remain on kennel rest for another month while he continues to heal. He’ll go back on 10/25 for more x-rays and then will hopefully be all cleared then. Thank you for your support as he continues his healing journey!

Minka
Minka is a 1 month old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Emergency Hospitalization for Aspiration Pneumonia.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Minka was initially found at a demolition site by a very sweet family. They picked her up, kept her safe and eventually found her way to ThisIsHouston! She’s only about 3-4 weeks old and was dropped off at the ER for care. Poor girl had wounds and maggots on the bottom half of her body. While it's unclear what happened to her, but her wounds have been healing well. Right when she was getting ready to discharge, she aspirated while being bottle-fed. Aspiration can be common and is a lung infection that occurs when they inhale foreign material (such as food). She’s now battling aspiration pneumonia and is fighting for her life. 60% of her lungs are affected and she’s on high-flow oxygen. There's a chance that that she declines despite our best efforts but right now she’s holding her own and fighting so hard. ThisIsHouston is determined to give Minka every chance at a future no matter the cost. Her care is extremely expensive but they didn't hesitate to take her in. Please consider donating to help Minka during her fight! 10/8/24: ThisIsHouston said “let’s give her 24 hours,” and this little girl made the decision for them. She fought for her life, and she won. She survived because she was destined to. She was destined to make a lucky family very happy! She’s now about 7-8 weeks old and is almost 5 lbs. She will definitely be large breed when fully grown. She still needs to gain more weight and strength but she is on her way to a full recovery! However, her bill still remains. Please consider donating to help Minka's healing journey!

Honey
Honey is a 7 year old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Emergency Hospitalization and Wound Care.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
ThisIsHouston An ER clinic we use often called us last night asking if we could take over this baby’s care. Her name is Honey and she is very sweet 7 year old Pit mix. A young child in the home placed a rubber-band on her neck that went unnoticed for an extended amount of time which resulted in a deep wound. She was surrendered over to our care and hospitalized at the ER to get the care she needs. Her wound was infected but there wasn’t a lot of dead tissue to be debrided. There was plenty of extra skin to close it, so it was cleaned really well, flushed out, and closed over a drain. She was discharged from the ER and is now in foster care, but has upcoming appointments to recheck wound progress. What we’ve learned about her so far: she doesn’t have a mean bone in her body but she is petrified of everything. She shivers and shakes at the sight of people. She prefers to be in her kennel. She is quite terrified of men. She has yet to untuck her tail. She has a lot of recovering and decompressing to do, but she’s got a very patient foster family who adores her already. She has a long way to go but in time, she will heal and start her new life. We cannot continue to help dogs like Honey without your support. Please consider donating! Update 9/26/24: Honey had surgery to close up the wound and it has healed beautifully. We don’t know what she’s been through during her life, but she is a terrified girl. She’s going to take longer to heal emotionally than she took to physically heal, but she’s in a loving foster home that has a whole lot of patience. Honey is slowly learning to trust and we hope in the near future she realizes she's safe.

Trinket
Trinket is a 1 year old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Emergency Hospitalization and Wound Care.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
ThisIsHouston Trinket was found as a stray with a severely injured back leg. She was taken to a local shelter that ended up amputating her leg. Unfortunately, her incision became severely infected due to self mutilation. We were heading to the local shelter for a different injured dog when they told us about her. We knew we couldn't leave her behind. Trinket is hospitalized at the ER getting her wound cleaned and debrided. They used fishing weights to pre-tension the wound which has really helped pull the skin together. They closed her wound and placed a drain which stayed in for a few days. The ER removed the drain and now Trinket is receiving bandage changes. The hope is she will be well enough to head home into foster care soon! She’s a beautiful girl who is quite scared of everything. She has been warming up to the staff and loves her walks. She gets around great on just her three legs. Her wound was very gnarly, and her care will be costly, but she’s in great hands getting the care she needs. We aren’t able to save dogs like Trinket without your support, so we hope you consider helping us help her. Update 9/21/24: After a hefty ER bill from being at the ER for 16 days, she has finally healed and is ready for a home! Her cheerful attitude and energy make her a joy to be around and she’s always ready for playtime or a cuddle session. She is laidback, doing well with potty & kennel training and is very easy to love! We are so happy Trinket is doing so well, but her bill still remains. Please help us cover this sweet girl's ER bill.

Donovan
Donovan is a 7 month old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Emergency Hospitalization and Wound Care.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
* ThisIsHouston * At 7 months old, Donovan has endured cruelty that forever altered his life and body. Poor guy has chemical burn wounds from his forehead all down his back. The only thing we know about him is that he was found wandering as a stray, and that he’s incredibly sweet. He was picked up from a local shelter and dropped off at the ER for ongoing care. Fortunately, his wounds look fairly pink and healthy, and there doesn’t appear to be an active infection at this time. Donovan's been at the ER for several days getting wound care and had surgery this week to close up his wounds. He was also neutered while he was under anesthesia. He has one large incision down his back right now and the wounds on his head are expected to heal on their own with time. Donovan is not the first burn victim we have helped, and he sadly won’t be the last. Cruelty is all around us, but so is compassion and opportunity. We’re beyond honored to help dogs like Donovan, and we thank you all for supporting our mission and efforts.

Ember
Ember is a 2 month old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Emergency Hospitalization.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
ThisIsHouston Ember’s lifeless body laid on the side of the road. There were no signs of life from her and she was in distress. There was also a trash can next to her. Kind souls stopped to check on her, and as you can see, she was very much so alive. Her body was limp but she was still able to wag her tail. She was so happy to find someone who cared. She was overheated, emaciated, dehydrated and in distress. Not sure what this poor girl was doing there. It’s obvious she’s been on her own for far too long. If she spent an hour longer baking on the pavement, she probably wouldn’t have survived. Ember is about 2 months old and only 3 lbs. She arrived to the ER with a PCV (packed cell volume) of 9%. Normal levels are between 35-55%, so she was dangerously anemic and needed an immediate blood transfusion. Her fecal came back with coccidia, hookworms, and roundworms — two of these can be deadly if left untreated and contributed to her anemia. Her nails are urine stained and extremely long, indicating she may have been kept confined. She’s nothing but skin and bones and at risk of refeeding syndrome. She was having trouble regulating her own body temp and on heat support and IV fluids & meds. Ember has a long journey ahead. Please consider donating! Update 9/4/24: This girl is the most precious thing. We went to visit her a couple times at the ER and there’s something about her that builds an instant connection with anyone she meets. She’s been bundled up in blankets like a little burrito each time we visit and she’s content being held like a little baby. She’s only 3 lbs right now so she’s very very tiny. She’s really skinny too, and you can feel every bone in her body. Her eyes, my goodness. They’re so big and full of hope. They just soak in everything that’s happening around her. She loves people and loves to give kisses too. She’s been able to maintain her own temperature, she’s on a full calorie diet now, and she continues to eat great. She was discharged from the ER yesterday and is now in foster care. She’s got a recheck on Monday to make sure she stays on the right path. We’re so happy she was found and is safe. Her story could’ve ended so different. She’s such a lucky girl. Update 9/9/24: Ember had a vet check up today to make sure all is going in the right direction, and they are! She gained a whole pound. We are doing everything possible to continue improving her health. Update 9/17/24: Just 2.5 weeks ago, Ember was dying on the streets. She was on a feeder road, right off the highway. We have no idea how she got there but she laid down and just gave up. She was too weak to move. Thankfully, a kind couple spotted her and took her to safety. Now she’s doing so much better and getting the princess treatment in her foster home!! She's even driving through Starbucks lines for pup cups. We are so happy with the progress she has made! Update 9/20/24: Ember is still getting healthy and growing like a weed! She is available for local Texas adoption, and our team is already processing apps for her. We can’t wait to get her into her forever home so she can continue to live the life she was meant to live.

Vinny
Vinny is a five-month-old Shepherd-Mix in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for emergency care due to abuse.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Rescuers from ThisIsHouston were shocked, horrified, and absolutely sick when they saw poor Vinny, who is just a puppy. "Vinny has been the victim of unimaginable cruelty," Laura F., from the rescue, tells Waggle. "He was found with a rubber band embedded around his nose, which has caused extensive damage. His face will never be the same." There is no telling how long Vinny lived like this. "Vinny was found by a good Samaritan who took him in to keep him safe and posted for help," Laura says. "ThisIsHouston knew we had to help this soul who, despite being so young, had already suffered so much." The rescue raced Vinny to an emergency animal hospital, where a surgical team removed the rubber band that had grown into his snout. "His nose is detached from his skull, so his nostrils are the main concern as they are covered with granulation tissue from his body trying to heal over them," Laura says. The surgeon placed stents in Vinny's nostrils, and now everyone is hoping and praying there is a chance his nose will heal. "Despite everything, Vinny is incredibly sweet," Laura adds. "Vinny has an extremely difficult and long journey ahead." Though ThisIsHouston's mission is to save unwanted, neglected, and abused dogs, the cruelty in Vinny's case is incomprehensible. Please support the rescue and help Vinny get a new start to life. Update: It would be totally justifiable if Vinny ended up being scared of humans as a result of what happened to him, or even a little aggressive, but he’s not. He just wants all the love. He really likes to crawl into your lap and he does it so proudly. He likes to give kisses too, and would kiss your face away if you let him, and also if that big cone wasn’t in the way! He is having suture/skin tightening and his muzzle is less swollen. So far there have been no major setbacks and is making slow but steady improvement! Vinny has a long way to go but has already made so much amazing progress. Update 8/8/24: Vinny’s been getting reconstructive procedures since coming into our care and just had a major one this week. He had stents placed to help keep his nostrils open and heal open. This week, they replaced the nasal tubes with the next size up to give him a bigger opening. There was a lot of skin missing on both the top of his muzzle and the bottom. They’ve been pulling/tightening the skin around his muzzle to help close the gaps. The bottom part of his chin was exposed flesh and we initially thought he would get a flap placed there. But there was not a lot of excess skin to work with in terms of doing flaps so doc made extra cuts to the sides of his mouth to do some closing on the chin. It’s not fully closed but we hope to see it granulate. He’s overall in a good spot! He’s still eating great and is feeling good. The top and bottom yellow dressings are being changed 2-3 times and the tubes will be kept in place for a few weeks. The tubes are prone to infection so he’s continuing to stay at Blue Pearl. Update 8/14/24: Vinny has been through many reconstruction surgeries but they are paying off as the top of his nose is so close to being back to "normal." His nostrils are passing lots of air but the stents are still in place. The top part of his muzzle has some healthy granulation tissue and we want that to heal on its own overtime. It’s already starting to grow new skin on the edges! As for the bottom part of his muzzle/chin — the surgeon tried to advance the chin skin forward by using bone tunnels and suture with the plan on advancing again as the skin stretched. Unfortunately, the sutures have failed, so he’s going to come up with another plan. Vinny is still growing some new skin there and the wound there is smaller due to new skin growth, but he wants to figure out something to speed up the healing process there. So Vinny will stay at the ER until further notice; he’s in great hands and receiving lots of love! Update 8/22/24: Vinny continues to do well. He's getting bandage changes and his maxilla wound is healing very well, getting smaller each time and still looking very healthy! The veterinary clinic massaged the swelling over his nose and that has improved a lot compared to two weeks ago. The mandible punch grafts stayed in place but we'll know if they are taking or not at the next two changes. Vinny's total care is about to pass $16k. We know that is a big price tag, but we think he's worth every penny! Thank you all for helping us make his second chance possible. Update 8/27/24: We’re on day 30 at the ER. The top wound is so small now! It’s been truly amazing to witness his journey. The punch skin grafts on his bottom chin look great. We’re expecting that to get smaller like the top part did. He’s such a brave boy and we’re so proud of him. Update 9/6/24: Vinny’s still hanging out at the ER being a little mascot there. He’s in medical boarding while getting his wounds tended to. Here’s an update from one of his surgeons: “the punch grafts are doing well and the skin is growing, the wound is getting smaller and is staying healthy. The maxilla wound is healed and the bandage was left off. The nasal cannulas were removed and the mucosal grafts are holding well. We will continue nebulization to help clear the mucus in his nasal cavity but they are currently patent.” He LOVES people and likes to climb in your lap and soak up all the love! He’s such a sweet lovable boy. Considering the damage that was done and the fact that we thought his nose would fall off when he was first admitted to the ER, this is amazing progress and beyond amazing to witness. Update 9/11/24: Vinny's had several reconstructive procedures done in an attempt to get his nose as normal as possible. His chin is still pretty much all flesh. The vet clinic recently took pieces of his skin from his flank and placed those punch grafts on his chin. It’s still in the slow process of growing, so we’re just waiting on his chin. We didn’t even think this recovery was possible, but Vinny is making such progress! Update 9/15/24: Vinny’s spent 7 weeks at the ER (majority of it being medical boarding while receiving ongoing wound care), but he’s almost discharge ready! He required several reconstructive procedures, countless bandage changes, and a punch graft procedure on his chin but he finally almost looks like a “normal” dog again. He’s loved all the attention he received in hospital and everyone there loved having him too. We're so excited for his amazing future. Update 9/16/24: Today he walks out of that same ER a new pup with the rest of his life ahead of him! He’s happy, confident, and loving and on the road to recovery. He’s headed to his foster home!

Mike
Mike is a 2 year old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Emergency Hospitalization and Diagnostics.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
* ThisIsHouston * Mike showed up on someone's doorstep crying out for help. It was extremely hot and he was in desperate need of medical attention. It was clear he had be suffering for a long time. ThisIsHouston rushed Mike to the ER for diagnostics. He was hospitalized and despite several treatments, nothing seemed to be helping. Mike had x-rays, ultrasounds, an MRI, echocardiogram, and bloodwork. Mike was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition he was born with, and about 80% of his brain is fluid. He started having seizures and still struggled to defecate on his own. When it seemed that all hope was lost, Mike pooped! He continues to make steady improvements and has gained an appetite and is more alert. Mike's long term prognosis is uncertain but ThisIsHouston is taking it one day at a time and making sure he feels loved and comfortable each and every day. Mike has been an extremely expensive case as he required emergency hospitalization, veterinarian specialists, and many diagnostics and medications. Despite seeming hopeless at times, ThisIsHouston refused to give up on Mike. Please consider donating! Update 8/4/24: Mike went to a holistic vet appointment yesterday. To no surprise, everyone there fell in love with him! They ran a GI panel to see if it comes back with IBD or anything else. Megacolon was previously ruled out, but there are other things that could be going on that wouldn’t show in a normal test. He’s still seizure free and pooping on his own, but he has diarrhea now and started a new probiotic. He’s also not gaining any weight and is still not very interactive, but we’re still taking things day by day. As always, we believe in providing the best possible care to every dog we commit to and we couldn’t do it without all of you.

Caden
Caden is a 6 month old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Hospitalization, Blood Transfusions, & Wound Care.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
ThisIsHouston ThisIsHouston received a plea from a local animal shelter about an injured puppy who was found abandoned at a hotel. They could not ignore this sweet soul who desperately needed help. They picked him up and despite being 6 months old, he only weighed 20 pounds and had wounds all over, mainly covering his entire back left leg. ThisIsHouston immediately took Caden to the ER where he was hospitalized. He was dangerously anemic and needed several blood transfusions. X-rays revealed he has old fractures too from previously being hit by car, but these wounds were more recent so it is suspected he was hit by a car at least twice in his short life. Despite Caden going through so much pain and trauma, he is quick to wag his tail and give love. He has a long recovery ahead but ThisIsHouston is determined to make sure he gets all the care he needs to be a happy, healthy puppy. ThisIsHouston takes on difficult cases that are emotionally and financially draining. They step in when no one else is able to to make sure every animal gets the treatment they need. Please consider donating and helping Caden heal!

Lily
Lily is a 7 year old American Cocker Spaniel in Houston, TX, who needs $700 for Emergency Hospitalization and Skin Treatment.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Lily has been suffering from neglect for a very long time. The sad part is that she is microchipped and has been owned her whole life. Her owner has been sick and in the hospital, so the brother was trusted to care for Lily. She was apparently missing for a week when she was found. The owner surrendered Lily to ThisIsHouston to give Lily the best chance at recovery. Lily was found with wounds and maggots all over her body. Once she arrived to the ER, she was sedated, cleaned up, and shaved down. She has severe chronic skin issues, even on her forehead, and she’s itchy all over. There are old wounds which go all down her spine. She’s blind with cataracts in both eyes. The inside of both ears are narrowed from chronic ear infections. She likely had chronic skin and ear issues her whole life which weren’t managed. Bloodwork has been showing elevated white blood cell count so she’s battling infection somewhere. She had a fever of 107 when she arrived to the ER on Sunday. She has no appetite. Her stomach and small intestine are both full of fluid which will need to be pulled off. Lily has an extremely long road ahead. This poor girl is a mess. ThisIsHouston is determined to do everything they can to make her better. Please consider donating to help this sweet soul receive the necessary treatment. Update: After treating her ears, eyes, and skin conditions, Lily is finally on the road to recovery! Now that she is feeling better, she is revealing her spunky personality. In even better news, she has found her forever home. However, Lily's medical bills still remain. Please consider donating to help cover the cost of her treatment.

Clifford
Clifford is a 4 month old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Leg Amputation, Toe Fracture, and Hospitalization.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
This Is Houston Rescue Clifford needs your help. Clifford is a 16 week old pup that was hit by a car this week. His back right leg unfortunately was totally shredded in the accident and is unsalvageable. His left back leg sustained a metatarsal (bones of the forefoot) fracture, and will need to be in a splint for 6 weeks. With one leg amputated and the other fractured, it can make for a tricky recovery, but the amputation absolutely couldn’t wait. In addition to his physical injuries, he has contusions (bruising) in his lungs and is being monitored at the ER. Clifford was previously owned but the neighbors brought him into a vet clinic, and the owner later came to relinquish him to the vet clinic. The clinic then reached out to us for help. We think he is a Mastiff/Dane mix. At 16 weeks old, this shouldn’t be Clifford’s life, but things happen and it’s up to us to help him. Please consider donating and helping this sweet boy in his long journey to recovery.

Jerry
Jerry is a 10 year old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $700 for Eye Enucleation and Hospitalization.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Jerry was previously owned and was surrendered to our care. We’re not sure the entire circumstances or any of Jerry’s history, but know the former owner did not have the means to care for their pups. It was in Jerry’s best interest to be surrendered over, and thanks to you guys, we’ll make sure he gets everything he needs from here on out. He was attacked by another dog at some point and has been sitting in pain waiting for help. Unfortunately, there was nerve exposure and there was no saving that eye. While he was under anesthesia, the doc checked out his mouth/jaw and did x-rays to ensure there are no other injuries. While there was no evidence of any other injuries, they discovered he has severe dental disease and need several teeth pulled in the near future. Jerry is physically recovering from surgery and emotionally recovering from all of the recent trauma and change. ThisIsHouston takes on many difficult cases but is determined to help no matter the cost. Their mission is to save one dog at a time while bringing awareness to the stray overpopulation problem in Houston. Please consider donating to Jerry's campaign!

Gunner
Gunner is a 5 month old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Parvo Treatment and Hospitalization.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
Meet sweet Gunner! A kind citizen found Gunner and offered him their porch and a towel. They posted a plea for someone to help him. He turned very sick the next morning and there were videos of him groaning in pain and having bloody diarrhea. He was actively dying and nobody was stepping up to help. And so we did. We never know what to expect when we’re committing to a new sick intake. Some bounce back quick, some take longer than normal, and some sadly don’t have a comeback at all. Gunner was diagnosed with parvo and needed hospitalization at the ER vet. He's making small improvements every day, but the road to recovery will take time. Gunner is a fighter and we are hopeful that he will make a full recovery. We focus on sick & injured dogs and don’t believe in putting a price tag on them. We’re thankful for any support. We aren’t able to fight for these critical cases without your support, and we thank those that do support us. You guys make this possible!

Apollo
Apollo is a 4 year old Mix-Breed in Houston, TX, who needs $2,000 for Spinal Stabilization Surgery and Hospitalization.
Houston, TX • ThisIsHouston
This is Houston Rescue Apollo was found in a ditch after he was intentionally hit by a car. The car never slowed down or tried to avoid hitting him. His little 25 lb body was no match for the car, and he sustained a severe spinal fracture: a L6 vertebral fracture and luxation which made him immobile. In addition to that, he has sarcoptic mange which is contagious to humans and other animals. He needed spinal stabilization surgery and the surgeon was worried about infection from the mange. But he needed immediate surgery, so we had to proceed. He is doing well post surgery but still has a long road ahead. We hope he will make a full recovery but time will tell. Despite his unimaginable suffering, he is such a sweetheart and loves to give the vet staff kisses. Apollo may be small but he has a big spirit. ThisIsHouston is on a mission to bring awareness to the stray overpopulation problem in Houston and help strays like Apollo. Please consider donating to help Apollo on his road to recovery!
